It’s always bitter sweet when one of your favorite bands can’t really write together anymore. Obviously we all want more System or at least did for a long time. Now we can look back and say “they are one of my favorite bands, and while their time was short, not a second was wasted”. Their discography is rock solid start to finish, and it will always represent that time on this planet perfectly to me.

Honestly though, We've got 5 whole incredible albums to appreciate forever. I'm in the camp of quit while you're ahead. I'm sure that if SOAD continued putting out albums they'd get worse and worse, and then we'd get to a place where everybody is wishing for the glory days again. I think it was smart of Serj to end it when he did. Aside from that, Serj himself put our several albums that scratched my SOAD itch, in addition do Daron's Scars on Broadway stuff. I don't think we've lost anything.

The people criticizing Serj and saying that he should just "suck it up" have obviously never been in a similar situation and most likely have no idea about the sort of time investment it takes to be in such a band. Imagine you're a talented creative person, you spend decades of your life building this huge brand and whenever you come up with ideas, you're kindly asked to step aside and let someone else run the show. Sure, you can do it, might even be fun for a while, but at a certain point all those ideas pile up and you remember that you are a talented creative person and your goal isn't to spend your entire life fulfilling someone else's vision. With that in mind you start asking for more creative input (in the band that you helped build) and if that gets denied, the next best thing you ask for is time for yourself to pursue those ideas elsewhere. This is actually extremely common in most bands and it usually leads to people either leaving, being thrown out or the band breaking up. Remember that those people owe us absolutely nothing so the fact that SOAD managed to put their differences aside in order to still perform live should be appreciated instead of criticized
@MothmanCold
@MothmanCold Месяц назад
We don’t owe them a thing either. They have Made excuses for not trying longer than they even tried in the first place. They should feel grateful people even show up at this point. They turned a great band into a side show event 15 years before they had to.

Indeed . A lot of bands i love , members have left either cuz of family or they wanna pursue other goals or flat out burnout which I totally get . I know for a fact I would never be able to tour every year if I was in a band especially with my separation anxiety, I’d do it once for a year and scratch it off my bucket list and do something else but would definitely still be making my own music on the side but as a hobby .

Huge Daron/Serj fan here. I think this was the best possible solution to not make another album. System has a flawless catalog and they are one if not the only hard rock band of their generation to not put out sub-par music after their prime. As a side note it would be cool if they incorporated a couple Scars On Broadway songs into the show as well as some of Serj's solo hits like "Empty Walls" or "Sky Is Over". That would spice things up alot.

Sucks man, wish everyone could find some way of it working out. System hit big when i was 13 and playing guitar 8 hours a day, i devoured their albums, queued up to get Steal this Album before school so i could listen to it all day on my discman. Then when i was 18 they just disappeared, such a waste of potential. Being in a band myself i can't imagine how hurtful it would be for someone to say 'i just don't want to make art with you anymore', but i also understand Serj's point of he doesn't feel like he can express himself creatively when Daron is so set his artistic vision. In another universe there's been 5 more System albums and i'm happier for it
@WaaDoku
@WaaDoku Месяц назад
I'm thinking the same thing. Stopping the band at the peak of their momentum for personal reasons that had nothing to do with family or medical stuff must have seemed pretty selfish to the other members. But I think there was a whole history of miscommunication between the band members for at least a decade that we don't know about that lead to this point where Serj decided to stop working with the other guys. It's sad but I also don't think that SoaD would work without Daron and Serj together. Maybe if the band knew early enough about Serj's artistic aspirations they could've looked for a new lead singer but how do you replace someone like Serj Tankian? That's impossible. It is what it is. Can't turn back time. It's sad because System of a Down have made and could've made even more paradigm shifting art as a band with Serj's and Daron's writing and composing combined with Shavo's incredible music videos. There's probably a parallel universe where Tool's and SoaD's fates are reversed and a new SoaD album was released in 2019.

@DEATHbyHEMLOCK
@DEATHbyHEMLOCK Месяц назад
He kind of alluded to it, but I think the touring is harder on him than the others because he's the vocalist, and it's harder to maintain your voice and health at a performance level, especially with all the screaming he does. Maynard James Keenan did an interview with Rick Beato where he explained how most of his time touring is spent around a self care routine so that he can maintain his voice, while the other guys playing instruments can go out and eff around for the day and drink beers and be ready to play with little to no prep. People think it's not hard to be a vocalist, but it's easy to wear out your voice and then you can't deliver the performance the audience wants.

They sound like Scars on Broadway songs, and honestly I don't like Daron's style of music. He had way more control in Mezmerize/Hypnotize and those albums suffered for it. Serj has always been very eclectic, in Toxicity and Steal This Album you heard _many_ different styles of songs. Daron only knows one style of music. It's not _bad_ by any means, but it all runs together and sounds very samey.

To be honest, most even great bands get gradually stale and tired after their first 5-6 albums. The way I look at it is, SOAD never had the chance to get boring. Whenever they get back and do a show or two, the fans love it and cherish it because it ain’t like KISS doing their hundreth Fake-Farewell tour. Every show has meaning, every show is special. If they were to get back together, who knows, maybe they could do Toxicity part two or another Mesmerize/Hypnotize… maybe… but probably not. So, kudos to this band for not oversaturating the market. Respect!

I still think they could make something amazing. The fact that they haven’t create a new album In 15 years is just pointless. They were the best!

I know it's not the whole issue but i can't judge any one who doesn't want to tour after back surgery. Alot of people would even call that smart. One thing I've learned is a noticeable percentage of older people who are jerks, have chronic ban pain. That ish will change your life. Also personally I'd take new music over touring 9/10.

I understand needing some distance from a band after so much time. Also not feeling the passion of the earlier years i think is normal.

I don’t know why they couldn’t come to an arrangement where the rest of the band write, produce and tour behind a new album, and Serj maybe guests on a few songs. Maybe hits a tour stop or three on occasion. The energy from the rest of the band would still be undeniably System, but no pressure on Serj to be full time. Could be interesting.

I can see why he likes doing a one off show. They aren’t hurting for money and it’s what it takes for him to be happy then the band has to respect that. Bands are like marriages, but with more people involved 😅

Im 41and in a very occasional dad band. We only do one or two gigs a year just for fun. The idea of touring sounds like a massive, drainging hassle, even at even my age and Serj is in his mid 50s.

Just imagine a singer saying "Hey, this isn't worth it to me. I don't want to do this" and part of the fanbase then claims that said singer has an "ego problem"...

There’s nothing wrong with evolution. He probably wants to bring more classical elements in and really go the Radiohead/muse route of really changing the style up.

I knew they were going to have problems when I heard the double album when it first came out. Most of the songs on Steal This Album were recorded during the Toxicity sessions and never made it onto the album. And look how many of them have Daron singing on them. Then you get the double album, and Daron is not only doing some vocals, he's doing the main vocals in a lot of places, and is turned up way, WAY too loud in the mix all over the place. Like...his voice is fucking penetrating! He doesn't need to be loud, his voice cuts through. But there are places where he's so loud, you can barely hear the rest of the band. It really looks like there was a power struggle between two guys who want to be the frontman.
