How to repair a SUN M3000 XSCF board with memory errors? What's wrong with a CR2032 battery that has 3 volts but still don't work?
XSCF board is the remote control and management board of a couple of SUN systems. Other system management processors are called iLOM but have similar properties. HP calls it iLO...
CR2032 batteries are everywhere and sometimes they can really trick you. I tell you why...

I got fooled by one of those coin cells once. It was a garage door opener that I thought was broken but it turned out it just needed a new battery even though the battery measured good. Now I know to put a load on batteries before measuring them.

Nearly all the time when I get a call about email and web browsing fault certificate errors, its down to failed cmos battery throwing the clock.

6:45 I use a 1/2 inch wide double bevil tip to solder parts like those. I also tip the board up in the air to get the extra solder to flow down the tip since the tip points upwards as I move the tip downwards and solder all the pins at the same time. The flux removes surface tension and solder bridges remove themselves.

I like to use BR coin cells on my mainboards...slightly lower capacity but better long-term stability. I have two HP business calculators and both of them are standard algebraic notation...I wonder why that is?

+1 That hot air nozzle is so perfect & sexy, it **must** be Swiss! +1 (if they'd let me) for being brave *hand soldering* those RAM chips. Then again, what else can one expect from a Swiss IT master? I freely admit I'd lay down a couple of nurdles of solder paste & hot-air solder the RAM, and give it multiple microscope inspections/
@PlaywithJunk
@PlaywithJunk 3 года назад
Those nozzles are indeed swiss made and they cost a small fortune each. The salesman told me that they tried to "outsource" the production but nobody was able to do it with the same quality. In fact, it's one old man who makes them from stainless steel.... they last for a lifetime. Thanks for the "IT master"... :-)

I would hate to think how much that Leister hot-air station cost new. I've never seen solder packaged like that before...is it Stannol?

You could put a resistor between your probes to measure the coin cell under a slight load. I can't remember how much current the 2032 is supposed to put out under normal use so I can't remember a good value for the resistor.
@PlaywithJunk
@PlaywithJunk 3 года назад
I think a load of 10-20mA would be fine. That's 1/10 of the maximum current in this case. And it would clearly detect that faulty battery. So like 150 Ohm...?
@alexisfrjp
@alexisfrjp 2 года назад
@@PlaywithJunk Clearly not, 10-20mA would drain your battery over a night. A 2032 has only around 200mAh... A normal load (basically only the RTC) in motherboard for such battery is

@@alexisfrjp I'm talking about testing the battery for a second or two. Not about connecting the resistor permanently....that would make no sense.

OK.... So then, have fun finding one! If you find one tell me the price.... (SUN M3000 XSCF board) BTW that was an internal repair which means that I'm repairing it for our spares stock. There are always moments not so busy, when you have time to repair such things. What do you think how many business hours are spent drinking coffee and playing games? In my humble opinion it makes more sense to use those hours for something better.... like reducing the amount of waste!
