I have a sleep disorder that causes me to hallucinate during my waking hours, and when I was a teenager I learned how to train my dog to point at any living thing nearby (including bugs and mice) like a hunting dog. For years, every time I got freaked out, I could trigger her to point and if she was confused and didn't point, that meant whatever it was wasn't real. When I lost her, it wasn't just losing my life companion or best friend, it was losing a medical lifeline. The months between her loss and when I got and trained up a new support (a cat, if you can believe it. he has more anxiety than I've ever seen in a cat and a hunting drive that means if there is anything alive nearby, he is either about to eat it or screaming at the top of his little siamese lungs) were incredibly tough. I'm so glad this community has Kodi's back.

As someone who also struggles with chronic illness, and has a huge amount in medical bills, I cannot imagine spending $15,000 on dog training. But you HAVE to do things like this when you're sick, you HAVE to find the money. I am so glad you were able to help her.

I don't want to be polemical, but it's outrageous that you have to pay for a service dog. As a veterinarian I have had service dogs as patients but in my country the universal healthcare system provides them with proper training and the people who need them get them for free. It's sad that a fundraising is needed, although I appreciate it so much that such solidarity is present in the world!

Luke wasn't a service dog, but he was an emotional support dog for my father. My father has PTSD from the military after having to go overseas in Iraq. I remember the first day we got Luke. I was three. Dad wanted nothing to do with Luke, but slowly they grew a bond I have never seen before. Luke was not just a pet, but he was my big brother, my fathers son. The day we lost him, I'd never seen by dad so quiet. Luke passed away at a ripe 13 years of age. For a Husky, that's an extremely long time. Luke knew his days were coming, but he held on for longer than he needed to. Luke fought, just so he could see us happy. And I hope Luke is happy where he is now. When I pass, I want to see my big brother first thing. I love you, Luke. You've been the best brother a boy could ever have.

this had me in tears. i'm in the very early and slow stages of wanting a service dog for muscular dystrophy among some other psych conditions like ptsd but i'm constantly put down and stressed by the reality of how expensive it is to upkeep and care for a dog while also just surviving myself as a disabled person who cant work, drive, walk far, etc. seeing just one of my fellow spoonies get this type of love and support means the world to us all
@musthavemoxie
@musthavemoxie 2 года назад
it can be expensive, yes. But sometimes people are able to train their own service dogs without a professional ❤️ so don’t give up hope. Even if you can’t do the training, maybe you have a friend or someone in your community who could help. Light mobility can be trained quite easily to the right dog. Heavy mobility (supporting your weight/etc) can be harder and you’d definitely need support to train plus a lot of work with a veterinarian. Most psych tasks you or a friend should be able to train fairly easily. You’ve got this! I got an SDiT and trained her in psych and light mobility , and I’d never even had a dog before.

@@kristn6513 is this a “thing”: prisoners training service dogs? What an amazing and perfect opportunity for everyone. Why isn’t this implemented everywhere ? I believe in second chances and that the prison system- unfortunately necessary is also archaic and more harmful than good. We are all human beings after all and there is no getting better if we are treating prisoners like garbage. Of course I’m talking non violent offenders and those with a good chance of rehabilitation… I live this for our country. Nothing better to teach someone unconditional love than a sweet dog.

@@qukigronereza It is a thing in some places, yes, and it's absolutely wonderful. The best behaved prisoners get to have their own puppy that they train as a service dog, and they HAVE to stay on good behavior to keep the privilege. The inmates furthermore get to feel great that they get to positively change the life of someone in need, which I've seen them talk about with pride in the vids I've watched on the subject. It's a wonderful incentive that's helpful in literally every way, and I wish it was more widespread.

Unfortunately, Rocco passed away unexpectedly and within 6 months my in training dog had to be retired for health reasons. I’ve had my Service Dog, Ricky for 13 1/2 years and he saves my life all the time. People don’t realize, these are not pets, they are like an expensive piece of medical equipment that keeps you out of the hospital. Being disabled and confined to a powerchair is hard enough, but without a service dog constantly by my side, constantly looking out for me, I would not be able to survive. Bless you for helping her out. People never realize how many more expenses the disabled have and how the bills alone can be crippling.

I read the "advice" on how to get Social Security disability (USA) in the above comments, "just get a lawyer" left me grinding my teeth. I am Hearing Impaired, no resolution from surgeries, hearing aids, no cochlear implants because I can't wear a hearing aid. SS insists I do not have disability, yet I cannot teach... Bills?? I have them too, my home trained, qualified Service Dog had cancer, he died three years ago, I am still paying off his bills. With a Service Dog I was more safe going out into the public, I have been mugged twice when he wasn't with me, and feel safer when I hear a sound I can't identify. The reality of how a Service Dog improvs lives is underrated by the public. My bills can be crippling as well, job prospects dim, yet we are supposed to"get a lawyer", yeah right. All the best,pet your Service Partner for me, after all they are in partnership with us!

I'm currently fighting with my parents to get a service dog because my disabilities are severe and my medical team agrees that I need the help. It's such a hard struggle, because they're allergic and don't like dogs, and they really don't seem to understand the legitimate medical needs that have led me to start pushing for this. Vanessa, your kindness goes so far. This has me crying not only because you've helped to give hope and relief to someone who has more struggles than we can even communicate, but because you've used your platform as you always do - to bring happiness, health, and awareness to everyone who watches your content. Thank you for doing what you do and making a tangible difference in the world.

Poor Bean, sweet dreams ❤️ I get a lot of syncope episodes from dysautonomia, one day I might consider a service dog but thankfully I’m managing on my own for now. My dear old dog Bella passed away 2 years ago and she was an unintentional service dog at home. I would always come to with her next to me on the floor. I miss her ❤️

Thank you for doing such a kind thing to help out a pet owner who also needs her buddy to help her live her life. I don't know what I'd do without my ESA dachshund, who comes running when I have meltdowns to lick my face and insist I pet her, which is grounding for me and helps immensely. She diverts attention like this with anyone who smells like they're overstressed or crying if they're guests at my house. She also acts as company because I am nearly housebound, and she is my daily joy and best friend, and I couldn't live independently without a dog like her. Actual Service Dogs do such vital work.

Who knew watching an awesome gromming channel would bring me to tears, but there it is.... Vanessa that is so awesome of you.... Us disabled people, physically challenged people, are treated like the outcasts of society. We don't receive near the amount of help we need, from not so severe to the severe difficulties/medical issues, in the form of daily help to financially.... So to do this for a fellow disabled person brings me to tears..... And my lil dude, who was my everything dog, his name was Cody..... (named after commander Cody of star wars by my then 13 year old son in 2015). He and I had a bond like that.... So it just makes me appreciate this gift for her even more.... Thank you sooooo much... And thank you for sharing your story Cody......

I struggle from ptsd and dissociative disorder and got a German Shepherd to be my service animal. I was never able to afford training and I unfortunately just couldn't train on my own but she does her best with what she knows and even just her being next to me during my episodes helps so much. I'm so happy that Kodi was about to find a new baby to help her. My heart hurts for her pup that passed but it's good to know Kodi is getting the help and love she deserves!!

This really hit close to home. Two weeks ago I got Ilo, he is a three month old Labrador and will be my first service dog. Today we had our first training session, and he did so great, I'm really proud of him. These dogs are life-savers, and its so great to see that they are slowly getting accepted. I live in Germany and due to my condition, its not possible to send him for training, I have to do it myself with my trainer, but its still really expensive. All the best for Kodi and MJ ❤ she will be a great service dog

My big sister has epilepsy and has absence seizures. At one point, she was having up to five or six per day. I say this because I can't imagine going through what my sister or Kodi goes through everyday and I am sure that having a service dog is very helpful and important. Having a chronic illness can truly turn your life upside down. My sister has been trying to get disability for several years and unfortunately she keeps getting denied. Thankfully, my mom and I work with her and we are able to be there for her during her seizures.
@vlmellody51

I'm sorry your sister is going through this. The way to get Social Security to pay up is to bombard them with paperwork. That's what I did to get my son in and 25 years later, it's still going strong. What I did was, every time they said no, I'd photocopy all his documents, stuff them in a Manila envelope and send it back out on the very same day. After about 5 tries, they gave him benefits just to get rid of me. Give it a try and may God bless you and your family.

Golden Doodle is probably one of the best choices for the kind of service dog Kodi needs. Very intelligent, easily trainable dogs that want to be close to their owner at all times. Saw the fund raiser today and it already crossed the 10k mark. If there was ever someone who deserved that help that quick, it's Kodi. Can't imagine how my life would have been with only one of the things she has to struggle with daily.

Dogs are amazing. My pug is no service dog but he woke me up when I fell on ice and got knocked unconscious and did the same for my aunt. My cousins dog protected me from a dangerous individual one night and he doesn't have a mean bone in his body. When my mom passed away I worked with multiple dogs and they all comforted me that next day in their own ways. They know. Somehow they know exactly when we need them.

Your channel is amazing! I'm a future service dog handler/owner who's very aware of the time and cost of owner training a SD. To lose her SD Bean after he had just finished his initial 2 year training (and was likely just starting to be physically mature enough to do brace and mobility work) would be devastating. seeing a fellow spoonie get so much support from this channel is amazing. I’m saving up for a service dog at the moment, and even here in Australia it’s going to be so ridiculously expensive and I won’t be able to get any government backing for my first dog so it’s all going to be on me… I’m a strong believer that anyone who would benefit from having a service dog should have access to one, and though that’s not possible for everyone yet, things like this make it possible
