Service workers impacted by tipping fatigue 

I have zero guilt not tipping at fast food or when picking up my food.

Tipping is just employers putting the blame of them not wanting to pay a decent wage, on customers.

I’ve gotten real comfortable hitting “no tip”

Why people let businesses in the service industry get away with this is beyond me. Nobody tips me as an engineer for a job well done. Pay your employees a living wage and cut the crap. Tip culture is a uniquely American absurdity.

No working person should have to rely on tips.

We, as consumers, are overwhelmed with tipping. It's out of control now. I agree tipping should be earned for great "dine" in" services. Not takeout, not fast food, not convenient stores..it's too much!

One of the reasons I love going to Japan is that you don't tip at most restaurants or fast food places, yet you still get an amazing customer service.

I quit tipping by not going to restaurants and bars.

Tips are a reward from the customer for good service NOT putting the burden on the customer. It's time for tipping to be replaced by a living wage. The public can't afford to absorb corporate greed and welfare.

The other issue that no one is mentioning is that they are asking for the tip before they have delivered the service. When you tip a waiter it’s at the end of the meal and you tip based on how good a waiter they were. It also motivates them to deliver good service but with tablets they’re asking for the tip up front. How can I decide what to tip you until I’ve seen what kind of job you’ve done and what motivation do you have to give good service when you’ve already been given your tip? And will it prompt you to give me poor service if you don’t like the tip or chose not to tip?

Yes I’m over it. I’m over all the extra fees we have now in general. Ticket masters is charging us so many different fees such as a venue fee, an online ordering fee, a booking fee, and much more. We’re essentially paying to do the work ourselves. We have to purchase bags at the store now and pack the bags ourselves There’s a convenience fee to pay bills online, but there are no other ways to pay certain bills anymore. I went to a restaurant and had a fee to sit in the restaurant. Plus they also want us to tip. Just crazy. It’s all one big rip off and I hate this for us all. It must be stoppe.

In Los Angeles you see now a kitchen fee, service fee added to your bill. On top of that TIP suggestions are 25% or more. I have not been tipping for the last 6 months. It went too far

I bought 3 donuts yesterday. The employee took them out of the case, put them in a box, and rang it up. They don't take cash, so I had to use a credit card. I was prompted to tip on the screen. I was a little taken aback, feeling pressured to tip for a transaction took less than a minute. I decided not to tip, but I now have a bad feeling about that place. For me, I would rather the owner charge a little more per donut than ask me to tip. Not sure I'll go back.

It's time to pay workers and end tipping

My step-niece works in a bakery and is paid $15 an hour but there's a tip screen. During the pandemic, there were people leaving very large tips and every day she went to work, it was like playing the lottery for her when someone checked out since they hoped they would leave a massive tip - sometimes even a hundred dollars on larger orders (tipping like 30%). She's very angry now it's not happening. She's vented about people wearing nice clothes and jewelry leaving only 20% tips. This is the problem. She's not even happy with any tip. She's still holding out for hundreds of dollars and now that that's not happening, she wants to quit.

I have even realized every store I go to they want tip or they’re asking for money for a charity that you would go broke if you tipped every place and gave to every charity even if it’s just rounding up your receipt 20 or $.30 it’s ridiculous. You need a second third job just to cover tips.

If someone buying also has a minimum wage job they can only tip so much. This is referred to as a tiptastrophy

As an American who lived for decades overseas in a non-tipping culture society, tipping culture makes me sick. Pay your employees decent wages and get rid of tipping. Period.

Tipping has gotten so out of control that I read some landlords are asking for tips from tenants for properly maintaining their rental property.

Dude it's not my responsibility to subsidize my pay because some rich business doesn't want to pay their workers accordingly. In europe they actually pay their workers well enough that you don't need to feel the guilt of tipping.

Tipping fatigue is a real medical condition. Side effects include not wanting to give away your money, not wanting to be constantly solicited to give away more of your own money, and rash.

the problem with tipping I've noticed for a family of 4 when the check comes the minimum tip percent is basically a whole other meal for a 5th person

People intentionally overtipped during Covid because we wanted to show appreciation for workers who were struggling during that time. It’s back to reality now but the service industry workers have gotten used to those fatter tips and don’t want to go back to regular tipping norms.

Ever since the pandemic, restaurant prices have increased about 60% to 80%. Which means taxes and tips also increase with the same ratio. Eating out just getting so expensive. They say the inflation is down, not restaurants.

Being asked to tip the person bagging my cookies at the mall is one example I can think of that is going totally unaddressed in this piece.

I’ve noticed, that some places like Pizza Hut and Little Caesars will take taxes and fees into account when calculating a tip rather than just the actual food charge when I order delivery. I only leave 15% tip based on the $12 pizza, and not the taxes and fees they tack on at the end. This may annoy some people, but I’m not tipping taxes, fees, surcharges, etc just so the driver or server can get a larger tip.

I stop tipping after going to Ihop and was ask to tip on the ipad and he had already push the 20 0/0. I ask for him to delete the tip and handed him a dollar and walk out and will not be back.

The cost of a meal has risen and people are getting squeezed...they don't have much extra to...tip. The Restaraunt owners, operators...need to step up and handle their own employees instead of passing it onto the customer. Then when you want $20 for a burger and fries...we'll stay home. That's what I do, I handle my own cause I don't have extra for anyone else to gouge upon.

I actively avoid places that put a iPad in front of you and worker asking for tips.

Hi from New Zealand we donot do tipping. It is not until we travel to countries that tip you relise what a hassle it is.

Tipping should have been dispensed with long ago, in favor wages and benefits. Women have always been particularly at a disadvantage with this system. I watched a business associate sexually harass a waitress right in front on me, and she having to take it just so she could get her tip. I never went to lunch with him again.

As someone who worked most of their life in the service industry, I am fed up. I've stopped tipping unless I'm in a sit down restaurant.

Let's adopt the standards in place in Europe. Workers are paid well, no tipping.

It's become like another tax. A non-official subsidy for the business owners. Tipping used to be about great service, but now they're trying to normalize it as just being expected regardless of good or bad service.

I hate tipping at fast food restaurants. In fact, I’ve totally stopped going to fast food restaurants that have these tablet tip screens.

I used to be one of those tipping 20-25% when just 18% was the norm. *I don't tip anymore. At all.* That said, I don't go out to eat at a sit-down restaurant anymore...just too risky in gunsexual America. What I do now when asked for a tip is make it clear to those around me that I'm not tipping... so that others won't feel alone in not doing it. Jobs that rely on tips need to go away. Businesses need to pay above a slave wage...or go under. I'm being the change I want to see.

I'm in Calif. and it is so out of hand now. They are no longer making minimum wage but still want the tips. The food prices are now so high my wife and I no longer dine out. Wages went up, but SSI hasn't! If there is an increase in SSI then the cost of the health insurance goes up the same amount!!

No one is going to do a massive amount of research to see if a worker should be tip. We as a society should just pay people a fair wage and get rid of tipping, like other countries.

Dang, I've never had any negativity toward full-service tipping. It's all the tipping for carryout and practically service-less purchases that doesn't make so much sense. I'll tip sometimes on carryout, but not so much by default as with full service.

My problem is when the check out software collects the tip. How do I know that management isn't putting a 40% fee on tips for administering it. I am deeply suspicious that management or software vendors are taking a cut.

Matt Cisneros from Cisco's Restaurant Bakery and Bar says he would have to raise the prices to make up for the wage increase. That's only if you continue price gouging system to your customers. His company is worth 3.5 million dollars. You can imagine how much they make annually. I'm sure they can afford to pay someone more than $2.13 an hour that's basically like free labor. These waiters without tips have an annual income of $4,600 before taxes. After taxes it's less. He makes it sound like that amount is just enough to get by and any other amount he would have to charge the customers more so he can just profit more. He just wants to maintain his high profits. It's not like he would be greatly affected if he kept the same prices buy raised their wage by $5 / hour. America is and has always been based on greed and taking advantage of others and the system. Compared to other countries our way of doing things screws the workers and screws the customers who have to pay their wage by tipping. The only one who banks is the business.

Kinda weird to tip the person that was hired by the restaurant and paid to bring me my food what if i just put in my own order and grab it from the kitchen?

Back in the 70's and 80's the tip rate was 12% and service was better.

The pos machine at my medical massage therapist's asked for tips. The average annual income for a medical massage massage therapist is over 69k per year. That's a pretty decent wage.

Hahaha I stopped tipping years ago. Why am I paying extra for already priced up services. That $14 quarter pound hamburger is made from 80% ground beef sold at $3.99/lb. That's ~$10 profit for businesses. Why would I need to tip $2 more dollars? Pay your workers

As someone from outside the US. The fact that the average tipping percentage is 19% blew my mind!!! 🤯😩 I usually tip 10% back home or 1-2 euros when in Europe. I don’t think I’d be able to dine out if I lived in the US

Too many hidden costs opens the system to exploitation. Do away with tipping culture completely and enforce transparency in all prices so customers know what they will pay for upfront.

Pretty soon we will have to tip the gas station person for pumping our own gas! 😢. I agree to always tip servers in restaurants and your hairdresser who always takes the time to do a good job but not picking up a coffee from Starbucks or picking up food to go etc.

I’m terrified to not tip at places where people will be handling my drinks/food when I have to pay first. I probably wouldn’t eat the food if I didn’t tip them. This is why I hardly ever go out. The pressure to tip everywhere you go has truly gotten out of control. I do however, agree that a good tip is warranted when you have been given excellent service. I always tip when I receive any type of service dinner, hair, nails, etc. but tipping for something when someone hasn’t even done anything for you is ludicrous. I think industries have put too much pressure on us and continue to try to “guilt” us into tipping every time we turn around.

I lowered my tip to 10%. Because that is the signal we need to send to the market for prices to come down. I also lowered visits to restaurants. If you think about it. The restaurant owners use how much you tip to estimate how much they can increase prices.

It’s a problem within the states that have sub-minimum wage. The state policy makers and employers are responsible for giving a fair wage. Don’t pass off the responsibility to customers. We’re not the employer nor the state legislators. If it’s not a good wage job, don’t take it.

Workeds need a raise from the owners of these businesses. Not expecting consumers to pay it for them

I went to a grocery store today. There were tip jars at every register except the self serve registers.

Pay cash!! & if they don’t accept cash don’t patronize. I try to pay in cash always bc I don’t like being tracked & profiled. As a side-effect of guarding my privacy, I avoid the “obligatory “ tip. Required tipping is a pet peeve of mine. I tip well but only for service which I cannot gauge til the end-never at the beginning. If cash is not accepted or there’s a surcharge I don’t go back. I hate nickel & dime-ing, like in Vegas or the airlines-be honest & upfront instead of trying to get over on me. .

that is why I think it is irrational that the tip pressure remains even in those states that don't have that horrible pay system. tipped workers here in Seattle don't rely on tips in the same way but there is the same or even more expectation for that big tip here. workers still deserve to get a better living wage from employers but the tipped worker is getting the same hourly as untipped workers here

They admit no one makes $2.13 an hour - at least normal minimum wage is guaranteed - then they go on to talk like these people are only making $2.13 if they don't get tipped. That is just a guilt trip tactic.

I have almost entirely stopped tipping unless the person providing me serivce provides exceptional service. My wallet thanks me for it tremendously. Providing good service is supposed to be and should be expected to be the standard without tipping involved. Tipping now is just employers way of being lazy to pay their employees a decent wage. A movie theater I went too charged me 18% gratuity already included the minimum bill charge which was a reach in itself but then they had the audacity to ask for another tip on the signing receipt. Its especially awkward at coffee shop drive thrus where they are holding the device for you to choose an tipping option.

Tip shouldnt be a part of the salary. - Getting your food or drink or w/e is a given, why should I pay for that? We should only tip when we think weve recieved an extraordinary service.. Pay the waiter/waitress/ w/e a decent basic salary for crying it out

The funny part is that probably the overwhelming majority of tipped workers do NOT report their true cash tip income. So your cash tips are usually tax free income for that person. I frequent lots of restaurants, and on average most of the good servers and wait staff tell me they make bank on tips. I see many driving nice new cars and more than a few are homeowners and live a good life. The problem is with tipped workers at businesses that do not attract many customers. If you are a good server who is working in a low end business my advice is to seek a job change either to a busy location, or to something with a solid hourly wage if that is what you need. I do not feel sorry for tipped workers who remain at slow businesses.

I worked as a barista and had customers tell me they had no idea I made "tip wage"... they never saw me as a typical restaurant server and therefore sometimes didn't tip as such. I really think businesses should be required to post a notice when their employee make tip wage (sub-minimum).

Here in Denver, tipped employees make $15.27 before tips. Minimum wage is $18.29 per hour. Since the per-person mean at even low-end places like Olive Garden or Applebee's now exceeds $30 in many cases, a server can realistically be pulling in $40 or $50 per hour. This is why tipping will never end. Servers won't take the pay cut.

A big issue with tipping entirely is that generous people are subsidizing stingy people. Numerous studies, and my personal experience working for tips for years, show that about 20-25% of people never tip. Why should I have to pay more to make up for them?

When I was a restaurant waiter in the late 1980s I was very happy to get 10%. Today 25% is expected... huh?! 😮‍💨

Any job that relies on tip as the main source of income is not reliable. How did we get to this point.

2:30 this map is a bit misleading because many other states, while they have not eliminated the subminimum wage for tipped workers, have state minimum wages for tipped workers that are close to the minimum wage, and often are much higher than the federal minimum. For example, Colorado which is marked in lavender on the map as one that hasn't eliminated the subminimum wage has a minimum wage for tipped workers of $11.40/hr - which is higher than the minimum wages in many parts of the country.

How much should I tip the vending machine?

The tipped minimum wage in Minnesota is $10.85 an hour or higher depending on the city one lives in. Our restaurants are doing just fine and the servers still get tipped on top of that. The excuse that businesses use that they don’t want to pay their employees a living wage is tired.

Some restaurants prompt you for the tip before you even get your food. Consumers should not feel guilty about this. Nobody told you to work the lowest paying job possible AND get pregnant. That is an argument between the worker and employer, and it always has been.
