Good strong CRT, but weak and fuzzy picture. Trippler?

So nice to find someone who wants to fix these old sets.

Cut my teeth on these as a tech fresh out of school back in the 80's. Fun to see the old stuff and remember "back when..."

For blooming watch for oil cap & a 1.5 ohm resistor on the hoz out base. Oil cap will cause either loud hum then pops breaker or pulsating pix. More common now than in the olden days. Hoz out is OEM if its says 121-831 or just -831. Latter sub was -1029 IIRC. There were at least 4 suppliers. Its a very robust part, thats how the cap can cause so much trouble. CRT necking actually caused by no vert. Cap opens then HV goes up to abt 50 KV. Then arcing & blowing things. Vert blows & puts DC on the yoke & hot winding cuts into glass. C U next video Tom LFOD !

Looking forward to another interesting series! It looks like it's in pretty good condition to start with, hopefully it won't give you as much grief as the last two did

F is 1975 model year. As far as the bad focus, it's usually either the tripler or the CRT socket (green corrosive crap on the focus pin). About 25 years ago, I was given one (or maybe I gave a couple of dollars for it) at a church rummage sale. We plugged it up at the sale and the tripler literally fired up. At that point, they just wanted it gone. I replaced the tripler and it had one of the best pictures that I've seenon a TV and I think the 17" ones look better than the 19" sets.

I have one that I now use as my ever day watcher in my living room.Just had to replace that power cap,it was shorted,the set worked for about 15 mins before kicking the circuit breaker,works great now.

Fyi tip dawg yo think safety/remember caution/safety etc when potentially working around/with even just near/etc things like (polychlorinated biphenyls) ie pcb's or other things like asbestos etc and in this case maybe thats in some or any capacitors of older tv sets zenith among some of the ones that at one point or another apparently contained or used those in capacitors or other stuffs.

Am I the only one who now wants to see a video of a high voltage runaway and the CRT neck snapping off on one of these?

Looks like it's modular, separate circuit boards which is pretty nice.

I'm trying to figure out the date of an older Zenith portable, what's a code I can look for? it's all tube I think, maybe one of the last before transistors?

I have three of those cc2 sets and they all have weird problems. One doesn't have color I changed the board and it didn't fix it. They can be challenging to fix and they have that oil filled power factor capacitor that likes to go open

Yes I have one and when I got it that was what was wrong with it.It would run for about 15 mins then trip the circuit breaker.I replaced that cap,and that did the trick.Right now its in my living room as an every day watcher.

Hey Jordan, its cool you know crt tvs. I have a 1976 RCA analog tv and I want to hire somebody who knows how to mod it. I want to install rgb input on it. I've posted, I've asked, and I'm told its impossible but I don't believe it. Some told me I could try using a neckboard, or I could replace the current circuits and ray tube with a brand new one. THEN someone told me it is possible to not replace anything and modding the tv without the jungle chip or osd. Its hard to believe but when there are different ideas, anything is possible. So I don't know if its your expertise but what can you tell me?
@JordanPier

On a 76 solid state RCA,.it's somewhere between very impractical and impossible. Most by then we're line operated, and there is no isolation from the AC line. This means if any modifications were done the set would have to be operated with an isolation transformer or anything connected to it could be fried. Even if I was a transformer set, you would have to make an rgb preamp board capable of driving the output transistors that fire the guns of the crt. Alot of r&d is necessary to make sure the system is properly biasing the output stage so the guns aren't cutoff or in saturation. This would be hours and hours of work. You're better off attempting direct composite video - but again you really should do this only if the set is transformer operated. Then you need to discover what video voltage peak to peak is needed. If it's any more than 1v, then an additional preamp circuit must be built. The reason why later sets can be modified is that the jungle IC has a loop through the RGB drive allowing for direct injection. The set is usually isolated through opto couplers, eliminating the need for an isolation transformer. Would be hard to implement that in an older set due to higher operating voltages. All for a picture that is only slightly better. I run all my vintage sets with a high quality rf modulator. If everything is working fine the pictures on these sets is great.

@@JordanPier This is what this guy told me. He says it can be done. 'Neither of those tvs have OSD, you'll need something much much newer. But rgb can be achieved by feeding strait composite video into the kine drivers. iirc.' 'The tubes are non interchangeable. Specific designs for specific parts. I would try and do as much research as possible on mudding a tv for rgb without a jungle IC or OSD. remember that a jungle IC is literally just a super compact version of what goes on in these televisions. OSD really is just a cheat code to break into that rgb line and output a signal unto it.' 'You would have to start by pulling a sams for the set and figuring out where the RGB information goes into. Break that line and input your own signal. That's not my expertise because I've never done it. I repair televisions for use with OTA signals. But that's the principle of it.' My brother says I need an electronics engineer cuz' what I'm asking for is a brand new kind of TV out of the old one.

Hi. I am new to tv repair. I just bought a 1974 Zenith with the 25FC45 Chassis. The TV powered on and worked great for about 10-15 minutes. It shut itself off and now there is no power at all. No crt noise or lights on the tuner. What do you think the problem could be? I have tried pressing the circuit breaker button on the back. Still nothing. Thanks!
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 3 года назад
Something in the power supply died. You'll have to troubleshoot what is causing the failure. Could be 24v supply, could be b+ supply, could be bad circuit breaker (check with the set unplugged and with an ohm meter. )
@vanhala7

@@JordanPier Thanks! I've got the "Zenith Color TV Service Manual" for 1974-1975 coming in a week or so. It mentions the 25FC45 Chassis so I'm hoping for some guidance there. The strangest part is if you let it sit for 30 minutes or so, it makes a quiet crt "raster" I think it's called, but nothing else happens or lights up. If you press the power button again, no sound at all until you leave for a while
@vanhala7
@vanhala7 3 года назад
It's actually more like a few minutes of rest before it makes the crt sound. It just becomes more audible as more time passes. I'll leave it over night and see if it turns on in the morning

@@vanhala7 I wouldn't. If it's a sweep failure and the fly or triplet resides to catch fire, the cabinet will catch and you house will burn. Nope nope nope
@vanhala7
@vanhala7 3 года назад
@@JordanPier So I shouldn't try to power it on until I get the manual and replace whatever is wrong? What is a "sweep failure"? Sorry for my ignorance on the topic. In your experience, is this more likely to be fixable or end up just a spare crt? Thanks!
