Servicing a Mk3 BSA Meteor Air Rifle

In this video I replace the main spring, the air seal, the breech seal, the shock absorber, the spring guide, the rear sight, and give the internal mechanism a thorough greasing.
The service was done using the BSA Meteor Mk1-3 full service kit, which is readily available online from various firearms shops, and includes the various seals, a Titan XS main spring, and Bisley gun grease.

Thanks for this. Your timing is excellent. I'm looking for a nice early Meteor at the moment to fettle/refurbish (Mk 2 was my fist ever air rifle). Your taste in music is first class. Fats Waller is reputed to have said, when he was playing in a club and Art Tatum came in, "I play piano, but God is in the house".

My god that was a lot of grease you should have cleaned and polished it and apply grease either end the middle does not make contact so no need for all that grease and removing the old metal spring guide and replacing with nylon type would have improved the rifle.

Recently acquired a MK.3 for free from a co worker who found it in a storage unit he bought for dirt cheap. It was in a case but it’s in pretty beat up shape, the wood finish is very faded and clearly very used and the barrel is visibly rusting slightly as the black paint has faded over the years. Still fires okay but definitely doesn’t feel very powerful. I have no experience in taking guns apart but I’d sure like to have a go at restoring it a bit. The breech seal is extremely rotted, doesn’t even look like there’s one in the anymore
@CorinNelsonSmith
@CorinNelsonSmith 3 года назад
I had no idea how to do any of this when I started, but I read a bit about it and then cracked on with it. The only difficult bit is getting the new spring back in as it will be much stiffer than the old spring. There are service kits online like the one I used that come with the grease and various seals you need. Taking pictures or videos as you go sure helps when putting it back together again! Go for it!

@@toqtoq3361 Hi, The Mk3. Meteor had a sintered metal rear sight and a metal front sight banded on to the barrel and a deeper fore end to the stock, internally most parts are interchangeable, due to the same fixing arrangements some Mk3 stocks were carried over to Mk4 models, as with the changeover Mk3/4 Airsporters. The noise you describe is possibly a decayed buffer wasmer
@Buckbury
@Buckbury 2 года назад
Sorry, all fingers and thumbs, I was about to say sounds like a piston buffer washer which sits under the metal piston head, they decay over time through the action of lubrication on synthetic materials, I always replace them with a equivalent leather item, alternatively the piston head may have become detached. Overall numerous anomalies are found due to the interchangeability of parts. Kind regards.

Excellent video mate. I've just done a Mk2 for a friend and I'm always ready and interested to learn new techniques! Just to relate my experiences for those wanting to do this. The MK2 I did had a fibre piston seal. Despite clearly having had a very rough 50 plus years use the seal was still in great condition so take the gun apart before you order the O rings. The shock pad was completely loose and hence the piston was loose in the holder so this did need replacing, I also think the design uses the pad to put pressure on the fibre seal and expand it? I used a Titan No 5 spring (as recommended) but I found this far too long. I can't agree more with your warning, springs under compression can be very dangerous things. I cut mine back to a length of 255mm, still 40 mm longer than the original I took out. Relatively easy to compress the end coil. It's easier and safer to put in and the gun ends up much smoother, more consistent accuracy, easier to cock and it doesn't sound like it's destroying itself. Just my opinion but 7 - 9 ftlbs is about right for these, still enough to go through a tin of beans. Barrel cleaning tip .. a couple of role up cigarette filters soaked in WD40 fired. £1 for 100.
@CorinNelsonSmith
@CorinNelsonSmith 3 года назад
Thanks for the tips! I agree about the Titan spring being too long, I wish I’d trimmed it down slightly. It said that it was designed for the BSA meteor so I assumed the reason for the old one being so much smaller was that it had just been compressed for so many years. I’m not in a rush to go through taking the spring out again though!
@black5f
@black5f 3 года назад
@@CorinNelsonSmith I don't blame you. I did start with the full length but decided it would end in tears. And .. don't know if anyone else has seen this, the centre tube up the spring, the flange has a 90 bend in to stop it rotating on the pin and a washer to take the load ... so if I had held it back with a screw driver, that washer can flip up? Didn't take any pictures sorry. So I cut it down. Just by 40mm or so to 255. I guess its around 8lbs but its as sweet as a nut, very consistent and accurate. So many go for power but I think you tune the gun for what it is? Luckily I cut off just about spot on. It's surprisingly easy to do, even crushing the end coil, just heat the last coil to cherry and you can squeeze it with pliers, reheat and quench under a tap, then just grind it flat. The original spring just fell out more or less. I do admire people who film their engineering adventures, so doffing my hat to you Sir. Just did a worn out SMK B20, same principle, don't over cook ... 3/4 group at 65ft which is at the limit of my 58 year old eyes ha ha.

@garethdavies7326

Hi, did that spring need cutting down to fit or was it ok as supplied? Do you consider the upgraded spring a good choice after using it? Very helpful video!
@CorinNelsonSmith
@CorinNelsonSmith 6 месяцев назад
I think in hindsight the spring probably should have been cut down, but I didn't consider it at the time. It was really tricky to get it back in, and was a few inches longer than the original one, but at the time I chalked that down to the original having been compressed for so long. I'm afraid I can't vouch for whether it has improved the rifle or not as a) I didn't use it before the refurb, and b) I haven't used it nearly enough after the refurb either...typical!

Hi, thank you so much for this video (I loved the music btw!). I have a 50 year old BSA Meteor my stepfather bought me (I'm not sure which model). It hasn't been used for 45 years. I'd love to restore it but the main take away from your excellent video is not to try doing it myself as it looks a bit tricky and I don't have the right tools. Could you recommend someone in Essex who could do this, or would any gun shop undertake this sort of job? How much should I expect to pay? Thanks again
@CorinNelsonSmith
@CorinNelsonSmith Год назад
Hi Jan, glad you liked the video and music - you're unique there! Everything apart from compressing the spring can be done with no special tools or skills, but that's quite a critical step. I'm afraid I don't know of any Essex based gun shops, but I suspect any gun shop with a workshop would be happy to do it. I would guess around £100 plus parts.

@CorinNelsonSmith
@CorinNelsonSmith 3 года назад
I’d expect they’re around the £250-300 mark now, so a good investment on your part! There are definitely all the parts available for them, but I don’t know whether it’s BSA themselves who make them. I bought spares in the UK from Bagnall and Kirkwood but I know a number of other gunsmiths stock spares.

Whats the power of the mk4 deluxe? If you know I had a bad second hand one that if you flicked it like a fishing rod it would cock My brother a home gunsmith polished the guts, replaced the seals and plunger Then bored it out to take a new ox spring ment for the bigger bsa and fitted a muzzle weigh to help cope with the jump. In went from a gun that went through half a 1980s thick bean can, and took one hand to load to a gun that kicked and went through 3.5 thick bean cans taking two hands to load The grouping was fantastic hole in hole or sometimes 50p size at as far as you could use the sites. I set them and used Kentucky windage after that and it served me very well. Id be interested to know the power of yours and the old thick can test results.

I have some trouble, the dissasembly of my mrk 4 was fine for most however the piston head hadn't come out with the piston and required me to use a small wooden toothpick to remove it, I have now come to assembling it and realised there is probably a part missing as of now the piston head doesn't attach anywhere, is there a C-clamp or something to grip, I inherited it and so didn't know if it was working or not.

I hope that given the spring was designed for the BSA Meteor, and is available online with no warning of it being over powered, it should be fine. Having said that, it was much longer than the original spring that I removed from the rifle, but that could just be down to the age of the original spring.
