In this video I make a serving tray with 3 types of joinery: finger joints to attach two pieces of wood together; a breadboard attached to each end with a mortise and tenon, using dowels with a draw bore; and legs attached with a sliding dovetail joint.
I made this tray from American black walnut and tiger maple so that there are highly contrasting woods to
Some of the things I used to make this project include:
Freud SD508 Super Dado Set: amzn.to/2q0VTaP
INCRA I-Box Jig: amzn.to/2GHpS1d
INCRA 1000SE Miter Gauge: amzn.to/2Ebj1HL
Freud 1/4" Spiral Up-cut Bit: amzn.to/2GvZAvg
Freud 1/2" Dovetail Bit: amzn.to/2GqZ3yJ
Freud 1/4" Roundover Bit: amzn.to/2H3pnfA
Minwax Tung Oil Finish: amzn.to/2EcksWD
Behlen Paraffin Oil: amzn.to/2GuJQsG
Behlen 2F Pumice Stone: amzn.to/2GuJVwu
Crystal Clear Paste Wax: amzn.to/2IlzITl

You are one of the few that elongate the outer holes on the breadboard ends so it can expand seasonally. Several "makers" don't know what to do.

Yea but he also glued the end dowels to the tenon which negates that. Also I have no idea why he’s making a climb cut when doing the sliding dovetails. Very dangerous

Love it! Making one this weekend. A couple things though... when you are making the breadboard mortise, you are technically making a climb cut which is super sketchy to me. Also when you were doweling the breadboards to the tenons it looks like you glued the outer tenon dowels all the way.. isn’t that gluing the dowel to the tenon? Maybe I’m wrong but I’d think that completely defeats the purpose of elongating the tenon holes to allow for seasonal wood movement.

You might find a little more information at the end of this video where I rub the chess board with pumice stone and paraffin oil. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N2I2UacznHY.html

great design and tutorial on the different joinery methods! what is purpose for 6 coats of tung oil? isn't it's job just to soak in and seal the wood for preventing moisture...then you could do the parafin and paste wax for the final sheen you want?.. it wouldnt build up layers on the wood or anything correct?

I absolutely would. Not only a beautiful piece but a great way to prototype build for larger work with similar joinery... without breaking the bank (or my spirit). Thank you.

Would love to make this, I think it looks stunning. I don't suppose you have a plan for this to download? But as a woodworking novitiate, I need to watch some more finger-joint jig videos and get some practice in on cheap off cuts before letting myself loose on the expensive stuff.

Please turn off your saw when testing or assembling stuff on the table, a minor mistake and you can be seriously injured. Forgiveness is not in the table saws list of attitudes.
