VERY interesting! Would love to see those old videos of the build, if there was a way to get them converted for RU-vid.

It just amazes me the work you put in to make Robby the Robot. The devotion to detail and really hard work to make a prop you would be proud to own and show off. This is like watching someone make a hotrod car or other item that takes time and sweat to make. A Made in America story!

This video was very helpful. I always thought that the dome was trimmed to fit just over the gyros and cover the front. I had no idea that it covered the whole head and was painted with the ear pieces stuck directly on the dome. I guess the fins on the back of the head must hide the seam really well. I have to laugh at your comments about not being accurate. The work you did fully accurate or not is amazing. Every time I watch your videos I learn so much more on the construction. I know that when you put files up on Thingiverse that they are dead accurate. That attention to detail means a lot. Tom

As for the original dome as seen in Forbidden Planet , if you check out stills from the movie you can see how the dome was trim'ed in a saw tooth design just above the tops of the fins. You can also see how the back of the dome was super thin and had wavy places in it. I later TV spots with RObby the dome had been replaced and had a straight cut just above the fins.

Mr. Riggs, absolutely love your Robby videos., and I really , really like the first Robby you made using the tire for the torso.. very cool. I built a 1:1 b-9 and hope to build a Robby at some point. I am close to retirement and have Robby in my sites. Thanks allot, also used the book “How to build your own lost in space robot”. Also you Gort video was very , very neat ! Jeff J.

Build type videos are a pain sometimes but these walk around and talk video's fun, almost like having visitors in the Robothut asking questions. I have one coming out about the arm rings, rubber glove hands and so on.

Very cool! I feel your pain. When I was building my B9 robot, there were times I was questioning my sanity. And my dad was probably questioning it as well since he was helping me. But he was a labor of love as it looks like your Robby was as well
@Robothut
@Robothut 4 года назад
Yes, same with the B9 robot for me. I had to build one wrong so that I could reach out to others and share information and build it all over again. The first one I built was crap but Bob May saw a video of it then called me on the phone to tell how impressed he was with it. I had to do it right after that. That would have been 1988.

Wooow!! It is an icredible job. Congratulations friend, I think that the most difficult part of Robby is to made the dome. A good and transparent dome, and the video is very illustrative. I will like that you continue sharing this interesting videos that I love. I have too a very beautifully collection of tin toy robots and I hope some day can visit your museum and you. Best Regards and Confeatulations again.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video, I found it very helpful and informative. I’ve been looking for years some place to buy the dome. I never consider two piece, but might give it a try. I love your creativeness on your mixed media builds, who would’ve thought to use a racing car tire. Incredible work !

@@Robothut Perhaps. When I was maybe 5, I saw "The Invisible Boy" on TV, and haven't been right since! I found my First Robot at www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-1960s-horikawa-martian-1725563728 but eBay makes it unlikely to be my Next Robot, unless someone scans one to an .stl. My chest/doors/machine gun mechanism *never* worked; bet you even know how to fix 'em... What is your Grail Robot, IYDMMA? And does anyone have the C57D tractor?

Is it possible in the future you could play those old vhs tape builds for a session?
@Robothut
@Robothut 3 года назад
I whish I could. There is so much good build information in them. But they are buried behind 20 years of stuff. All that stuff would have to be moved some place "I do not know where" so I could get back to where the wall of VHS and Beta tapes are located. It could happen, but a lot of things will have to change before I could dig back threw it all to find the tapes. Then how to transfer the tapes and edit them for RU-vid upload. Many of the tapes were copied and sent to friends . I will have to see if any of them might still have the old tapes.

Amazing, I have been dreaming of building a Robbie for years, your videos are an invaluable source of information! While our expertise is in the custom and classic auto restoration business for last 50 yrs, this is the project I've always had in the back of my mind. We do all hand form metal bodywork and I always assumed Robbie was mostly metal, & I figured we are capable of making most of him in our shop but now wondering if that's a practical aproach. We have done many builds from nothing but photographs as a guide & I assumed that would be the plan, but I'm wondering if there are any full kit blueprints available for purchase for a full scale Robbie build? Your attention to detail and documentation is fantastic, so interesting to get inside info on yours and see how you did it, I give you 100 points plus on the fantastic job you've done. Also curious how long it took you & if you can share approximate cost of completed build? Thanks for sharing these great videos, your obviously a master craftsman& I'm in awe of the work you have done on your Robots, wow.......

Hi John, regarding Robby's Dome Section drawing in the Cinefantastique article....Unfortunately there's no measurements and the publishers cut off the scale. Would it be possible to identify a size on something in the drawing? That way it could be scaled up?

Wow thanks for sharing this . I remember as kid in the 70s ready a Magazine about a guy who made a Robby and i remember ready that he made the torso out of a dragster tire . This is so awsome this was you what Magazine was that a starlog or Famous monsters issue what issue was that would love to find a copy of it Also it would be great if you made a dvd available to buy with your construction of robby or share here on RU-vid i find it all so interesting iam sure all the other people would find it interesting .

All my old video back in the 1980's and 1990's was on VHS tape. So the problems would be first digging out the old VHS tapes and then some how changing them into a digital video file that could be uploaded to You tube. I do have videos of just about everything I built back then. Going threw all the tapes looking for the good stuff would be a full time job. I probably will not get around to it, life is too short. Not sure what mag might have had my Mixed media Robby build with the racing tire body, and earth globe legs. Probably Filnt Michels mag or Robot World might have been the one.

So ultimately what do you recommend for the dome? Do you have a better solution?
@Robothut
@Robothut 2 года назад
There is only one way to do it that I know of. Make a master form "slug" from wood or high heat resin or wood covered with high heat resin. Use PET plastic, that's the same stuff used for water, pop, type bottles. it thermal forms easy, can be cut easily and you can paint it. A large vacuum form machine is best, but you can do it with lots of friends and large wood rings that get smaller and smaller in hole size. You have to work really fast with the wood ring set up.
