How to set up the best bicycle cleat position for comfort and injury prevention as part of bike fitting: Using a shimano Look cleat on a road bike, spd or spd-sl on a mountain bike or mtb cleat on a trail bike or bmx, we demonstrate how to set up the cleat position to increase comfort and prevent stress or injury to the knee while cycling and increase performance for the cyclist. The bike fore aft cleat placement is important in placing the pedal spindle directly under the head of the metatarsals of the foot (ball of the foot). If the cleat is to far forward, pain and discomfort will occur in the toes when cycling. If the cleat is to far back, one will experience foot pain under the sole of the foot while you cycle. How the feet are pointed on the pedals should reflect a normal relaxed stance when off the bicycle. If the toe is pointed inward or outward to far, one will create stress on the knee resulting in knee pain and possible injury. We show you tips on how to turn the cleat to get the toe pointed in a comfortable position for cycling.
With the cleat position properly on the bike shoe, you're ready to ride. Fine tune the position if you experience any discomfort and your ready to cycle.

Cleat fore/aft position may vary by individual preference. Some find it more comfortable to have the spindle axel just behind the metatarsal of the big toe, others between the metatarsal of the big toe and that of the small toe. Take a look at this reference from Utah cycling: www.cyclingutah.com/fitness/coaching/the-foot-pedal-connection/

I’m experiencing some toe numbness/tingling mid-ride during laps. I thought it was coz my saddle height was off, i forgot to set it higher when i replaced my flat pedals with spd-sl and started using cycling shoes a few months back. I adjusted my saddle height to where it should be, but numbness/tingling is still there. I’ll try and move the cleats back by a few mm, see if it helps solve this numbness/tingling. Thanks for this vid sir Tony.

Let me know how you make out with a change in cleat direction. I usually mark the front tip of the cleat and the sole of the shoe at that point with white nail polish (or white paint - just a drop). This way I'll know how much I've rotated the cleat. Then change the cleat position just a tad and try it out. Repeat until you get a more comfortable position. I have an indoor train on which I can mount my bike and fool with the cleat position. When comfortable, tighten down the cleat bolts a little more and take it on the road.

The way you correct toe-in and toe-out is the opposite as I would have thought. Going to try this.
@tony10speed

It works and if you think about it, it will make sense. Turning the cleat toward the big toe means that when you click in, the cleat will be straight but the toes turns outward and the heal inward. And vise versa. Yes, it is "mind bending." Regards, Tony

so align the pinky toe ball joint to the spindle?

No. You need to look at your own particular stand and try to match that on the bike. This will prevent knee and other injuries.

Hello and thank you for this video. I use SPD set up. My shoes squeak and make alot of noise when climbing. I was told to trim with grinder or make sure the rubber soles are not make contact to any part of the pedals. Does this sound accurate? Thank you
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 5 лет назад
Do you have another set of shoes with cleats? If so, try them and see if you still have the squeak. If you do, it's not the shoe or cleat, but the pedals. Also see my video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xn0bokygJ9c.html Regards, Tony

Hello! I have a recently changed to 170mm crank and Shimano SPD pedals. I find that with my left foot my heel starts rubbing against the crank arm as I start to tire. LBS advised me to turn the cleat angle inwards towards my big toe (to move the heel outwards) and place the cleat closer to the inside of the shoe. Does this sound about right?
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 5 лет назад
If you change the cleat angle such that it does NOT correspond to your normal stand, this can result in knee pain. You can try turning the cleat toward the SMALL toe, but just a tiny bit. Another solution is to remove the pedal, add a washer of the correct size to the pedal spin (I took a washer the size of a half dollar and filed out the inside to fit on the pedal spindle - took a little time to do), then re-install the pedal. Now the pedal is a little further away from the crank. Regards, Tony

I have always walked duck footed (out-toeing) my right foot tends to be more severe around 45 degrees I’m getting lots of pain in my mcl. I tried to angle the cleat towards the big toe but my foot is now hitting the crank arms any suggestions? Thank you !
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 6 месяцев назад
Had somewhat of a similar problem. Added two 1 mm pedal spindle washers and my foot now cleared the chain stay. I would not recommend more then a total of 2-2.5mm worth of washers for a light to medium build cyclist and a maximum of 2mm for heavier riders. You can also get pedal extensions of 15 to 25 mm. Or, consider pedals from Shimano and a few others that come with longer spindles to move your foot further from the frame. The pedal washers are cheap and the first thing to try. The pedal extensions are often too much for most riders. The pedals with a slightly longer spindle are more costly but something you should consider. Let me know if any of these work for you. I am more comfortable if the cleat is placed in more downward position, I have more momentum in pedalling, because the transfer of power is near to my legs.

I am having pain on my left inner knee even though I adjusted saddle height and cleat position what could be the reason?
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 3 года назад
If you've adjusted the cleat position such that the foot resembles your normal stance and is comfortable, there are several other things to consider: 1. Cyclist with strong quads, the quadriceps muscle may pull on the knee cap causing pain on the inner aspect of the knee. Massaging the quads, stretching and ice may be a way to relieve any tight muscle groups and relieve the pain. See: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6z_nqoeodfI.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchandTonyMarchand 2. Over use due to sudden increase in mileage. Increase mileage slowly over time. 3. Poor bike fit. The saddle height may be incorrect or saddle may be too far forward or too far back. It's always worth having a good bike fit. 4. Medical conditions such as patellar tendonitis or other issues. If the pain is not relieved by the above or gets worse, consult your medical care provider. How do you find the metatarsal of the big toe?
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 5 лет назад
Feel along the inside of the foot starting at the end of the big toe. As you move your hand along (about 3 inches or so) you will come to a bony protuberance which is the metatarsal.

what do you do if you adjust your cleat and your heal begins to strike the frame? do they make frames to accommodate this ?
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 4 года назад
I assume you mean hitting the crank (it would be extreme if your heel was hitting the frame itself). You probably need to re-adjust the cleat a very tiny amount toward the small toe. Adjust until your foot position feels good and you're not your heel is not hitting the crank (you can also put some frame protector on the crank or frame for protection of that area). If that doesn't solve the problem: When standing, move you legs up and down, relax and look how your toes point. Some individuals naturally have there toes pointed outward ("pigeon toed"). I, myself, have this problem. After adjusting my cleat the best I could, my heel still hit the crank. My solution was to take a 2-3 mm thick large metal washer and file the inside such that it fit onto the pedal axle. It was just enough to move my heel away from the crank arm on both side. Don't add more then about 4 mm thickness of washers or you may not be able to engage the pedal spindle and tighten it firmly. Regards, Tony

In your opinion which clip pedal and cleats is better and more comfy for long long distances and trips?
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 5 лет назад
I must say opinions do vary depending on whom you talk. I ride 40 to 60 miles on an average ride but with many many centuries and double metrics under by belt. I have had in past years up to 12000 mile/year. I use two types of shoes, pedals and cleat sets that give a broad platform and distribute the pressure. Look Cycle Keo Classic 3 Road Pedals and cleats on my racing bike: (Amazon www.amazon.com/Look-KEO-Classic-Road-Pedals/dp/B01LT5X4WA/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2HEZ14HYNDDV2&keywords=look+pedals+keo&qid=1552082209&s=gateway&sprefix=look+pedals%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-5) But for my other bikes (mountain and road), the SHIMANO PD-M530 Mountain Pedals and cleats: (Amazon www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0052XXW32/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_9?smid=A2OVHENG73GA0X&psc=1) Although a little heavier then the Look, the Shimano PD-M530 gives a nice broad base to be used with a mountain bike shoe that allows you to walk in comfort. You can put it on any mtb or road bike. Some of the Shimano mountain bike shoes allow easy clip in by just sliding the foot forward to engage the pedal. However, I suggest you try the shoe on for comfort first and look to see if it has this added feature. Regards, Tony

very helpful, most videos are road pedal specific, so thanks for using mtb.. now i'm wondering if there's float variance in mtb cleats or is that just a road pedal thing? i may switch to road and try that 5° or 10° of float if adjusting my mtb cleat does not fix my knee pain
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 4 года назад
Mountain bike cleats do have float, but it's a function of the pedal, not the cleat. I set my mtb cleat such that they feel comfortable and that I experience no knee pain (which I, myself, experience) but still have about 4-6 degrees of float with my Shimano spd pedal. So if you can't move you foot 4-5 degress, you may want to try another pedal type (p.s. I love my SHIMANO PD-M530 Mountain Pedals). However, before you rush out and buy new pedals, there are many other causes of knee pain while cycling, so take a look at this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DRniqJXEeXw.html You also might want to get a profession bike fit with knee pain in mind. Let me know how you make out. Regards and safe cycling, Tony
