A comfortable action is essential to making your guitar play well, but you can only get the action right if you can measure it first!
The String Action Gauge allows you to quickly and accurately measure the action of any guitar or bass. It has 0.25mm marks that are easy to read, allowing for up to 0.1mm accuracy measurement.
Available from Australian Luthier Supplies - luthiersupplie...
Typical Action Measurements are -
Electric Guitar - 1.6mm treble, 2.1mm bass
Acoustic Guitar - 2.0mm treble, 2.5mm bass
Classical Guitar - 3.0mm treble, 4.0mm bass
Bass Guitar - 2.4mm treble, 2.7mm bass

yes, useful and I have one, but rarely use it. I just use two or three different coins. I know their thickness in millimeters, so I just slip one between the string and fret to get a good idea if I need to adjust action --works perfectly for me

Very cool! Its similar to using a feeler gauge. Not as accurate as the gauge but if it works it works!

Cheers! Have avoided my own setups for years because could never find anyone who explains to measure from the bottom of the string!! Ta, again!

I thought you are supposed to put a capo on the first fret when measuring the string height at the 12th fret. Does it matter? Which is the right way?

Either way will work but it will change the desired measurements at the 12th fret if you use the capo so just factor that in if you use one. Using the capo at the 1st fret will lower the strings slightly at the 12th fret so the measurements for the action at the 12th fret will be less than without the capo.

What about the other 4 strings?

Good question! If the saddle is a fixed shape/radius, as in an acoustic guitar or a guitar with a tunematic, for example a Gibson, the middle 4 strings will automatically be set once you set the outer 2 strings. If all 6 saddles have height adjustment, as on most Fender electric guitars, you will need to adjust all 6 saddle heights. Each string should step up in equal increments.

@@AusLuthierSupplies Interesting to know. I never knew about Tunematic. What you explained in your response is what you didn't show in the video. Why stop at the E strings? Not everyone has a Tunematic saddle. I went to another video and saw another guy explain it all using various tools. Thanks for your response. I did learn something,
