This topic "Set The Right Expectations at In-Laws Place" came to our mind because of our personal experience itself.
The conflicts and the tension between saas-bahu (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law) are not new. In fact, over the years, there is a major breakdown in the relationship between daughter in law and her in-laws. The distance between them has increased.
The reason for this is the generation gap. Today, we are much more liberal and empowered that we look for equality even after marriage. But our in-laws are still in that pre-liberalized generation and want their daughters-in-law to do things as per their wishes. From her wardrobe to her eating preferences, everything is decided by her in-laws.
Since everyone is new for her and she has come to a new house, a new family and to a new life, she does not say anything and adjusts. She adjusts and keeps on making compromises. But if you won't speak up and set the right expectations in front of your in-laws from the beginning, later the situation gets worse.
You are not there for a few days or months. You are there for the lifetime now. So, it would be any day better if you confront and speak up about your wishes too. Otherwise, soon you will start feeling suffocated at the in-law's house. Then you will either want to move out of the house and live separately or you all will live together but will not be happy.
That is why it is very very important to set the right expectations from the beginning of your marriage. But don't be disrespectful to them and fight with your in-laws as they are also right at their part. They have grown up seeing these things and these things are right for them. So just keep calm and confront what you want. At least, there is no harm in trying for things. Even if you don't get it, at least you tried for that.
