This is exactly the sort of lesson I was hoping for....not many people can pull off standing seoi nage at any level especially yours and I've seen you do it more than once! Thanks for sharing these type of lessons for me are the most important

@@TravisStevensgrappling I will for sure.... I can do beautiful seoi nages when practicing... but pulling them off at randori and comps has never happened...hopefully this will crack the code. It's the small details that make the difference the posture the grips, footwork etc thanks for sharing

Hey Travis, what do you think of taller guys doing seoi nage? Should we not attempt it against smaller opponents? Also, I really wanted to make a highlights video of your judo. Know anywhere where I can get footage of your tournaments?

As for Seoi for taller people it really depends on how much taller. If your a head taller I would rather see a Koshi Garuma, same foot work just different hand placements.

Travis Stevens ah Koshi Guruma. Makes sense. Last time I checked judobase your videos weren’t there... they are now! Gives a day or two!

I’ve been binging your content for a few days now, really appreciate your approach to the standup game. I’ve been doing bjj for around 15 years and have always been attracted to throws, but it wasn’t until Brian Olson opened a school 40 minutes away that it reminded me how awesome judo can be. Thanks again for all your work.

One thing that I've noticed that doesn't seem to get touched on a lot is how to use the jacket to move your opponent. Everyone talks about pushing and pulling and I kind of get that, but I think this (and another one of your other videos) is the only one that really talks about how hand placement really matters outside of just "Guard the collar grab the collar"
@TravisStevensgrappling
@TravisStevensgrappling 4 года назад
People don't talk about it much because it's very difficult to teach. It would be easier to break down match footage to explain it. Maybe that is something I could do in the future.

As I said earlier, Travis is the only best and reliable judo teacher on RU-vid, d rest are counterfeit, Travis understands what he is teaching and with situational facts and reality, not just assumptions, but what works and what doesn't works and the psychology he imparts into us is enough teaching alone,am ready 2 represent "Nigeria already for the Olympics due to his videos

Thanks, Travis! I just got the course, and it looks really good. I have a question that I've always wanted to ask (and which I'm guessing won't be covered in the course). If you're in normal regular right-handed shizen-tai (i.e. both players are symmetrically holding a right handed stance with the right foot forward), and your opponent is expecting a right-handed seoi, he's often thinking about defending against that right-handed seoi. He's often not thinking as much about being thrown with a left throw. Since you already have your right hand gripping his lapel, can you just throw a left-handed seoi from there? I see it every so often at lower levels. I don't think I see it much internationally, though I distinctly remember Hifumi Abe doing a similar change of direction into...maybe sode? I think he's done it more than once. He goes one way and then ends up going the other. I watched the first fifteen minutes of your Seoi course, and it looks like it would be harder to get uke to "punch back" or for tori to "fill the space" if uke's right foot is forward. The distance you need to travel is also greater. But can it still work? If not, is there a way to set it up so that it works? I'm just wondering if it's good to have a threat on both sides, or whether that left throw mostly only works on lower-level opponents.
@TravisStevensgrappling
@TravisStevensgrappling 4 года назад
Thats a good question. And yes I go over that in the instructional. It's in the moving uchikomi section with walking to go over footwork so you can practice moving your partners feet out of the way and timing attacks.

Dont knows why but this video came out with extra low volume for me. Usually it's just a little low, but I could hardly hear you on this one. Besides that, excellently presented content. Do you believe ippon seoi nage is a good throw for most body types? Taller or shorter players etc.
@TravisStevensgrappling
@TravisStevensgrappling 4 года назад
I'm really sorry about the audio. I'll have to take a look at why that happened. Yes I think it's a great technique for most body types. It's a good overall throw.

Many thanks for the details in this excellent video! This can really kill the high grip while having strong shoulder control for ippon seoi nage. As a right handed player, I have also tried to use this grip to set up ippon seoi nage, but I found that I would not be able to do other techniques like right side morote seoi nage, tai otoshi, etc, which I could only perform with a standard sleeve and lapel grip. Wish to know how you would set up other techniques with this grip? Or would you prefer attacking the left instead? I also wish to if you would use drop seoi in BJJ, or you would prefer other takedown techniques with lower chance of having your back taken? Thanks a lot!
@TravisStevensgrappling
@TravisStevensgrappling 4 года назад
Hey Yeung, you bring up some good points. You are limited in the amount of attacks you can do. However I do have variations of those throws that I can do to mix it up a little bit. As for the Drop Seoi Nage yes I would do it in BJJ. I would just make some adjustments to how I do the throw.
