Kaiba was not gay for Yami. It is a man fulfilling his purpose. His bond is through ancient egypt, history and prohecy. They were on the same stone tablet. Leave it to a woman to not understand male energy. Purpose drives men.
Imagine being unable to interprate a complex relationship as anything but boring base text because you're afraid of it being gay. I'm sorry your card obsessed shut in rich boy isn't straight when a literal leather Egyptian king shares his one interest.
@@nanibirb5687 while OP is being a dick about it, I do prefer the obsessive angle, as Kaiba finds someone to match/fight him, since he always plays into the “better than you” mentality. Again, I don’t agree with OPs interpretation specifics or tone, but I prefer the non-gay reading of the relationship (personally) since I think it’s more interesting
I find "purpose drives men" a really funny statement, because purpose is such a broad and personally defined thing, that it's almost like saying wanting things makes people do things. Which yes, that's true, but also sometimes a purpose of someone or the thing they want is a romantic relationship. As if there haven't been scores of men throughout history who have been motivated by romantic desire in their actions.
Me as a little kid watching the dub: Seto Kaiba is so cool and I'm frustrated he refuses to accept his role in all the ancient Egyptian magical stuff Me as an adult going on a Yu-Gi-Oh nostalgia trip: Seto Kaiba looked ancient magical fate in the eye and said 'nah I'd rather play card games' and he's my goddamn hero Like everyone's constantly going "Kaiba come down here and accept your role in this supernatural drama full of weird torture and darkness and death that may bring about the end of the world" and he's just like "I can't hear you up here flying around in my bitchin' dragon plane anyways time to go invent some cool future shit byeeee"
Read the manga, waaaaaaaay better, trust me! Edit: Not saying the manga is the only valid way, personally I both read the manga and watched the anime - I just recommended the manga because I feel like people often overlook it, and it's such a great experience!! (This edit was needed due to people thinking I was saying the anime is not worth it. I should have phrased my original comment better, but thought that people would understand... oh well!).
Yes you should, and yes you should wash the dub. It is amazing all forms including watching the manga evolve from murder ghost going after bad people or people who annoy him with various games, to oh here's a soft reboot we are now just a card game and the ghost is less of a vertigo but he would still kill some people.
In the sub he accepts the Egyptian stuff when he duels Yugi in Battle City. He just declares it's irrelevant because he's Seto Kaiba with his own life, goals and hardships, not some priest Seto or whoever other people (Gozaburo/Ancient Egypt) want him to be. He then goes and builds theme parks (Kaiba Land) where orphans get free access to.
I dunno, there's a certain charm to the dub where he's literally transported to ancient egypt and he's still going "heh, I must be hallucinating because this is all BULLSHIT ok, now where's yugi I wanna duel"
Exactly. I really liked the way Kaiba explains to Yugi why he doesn't want to be involved in the Ancient Egyptian stuff. He believes that chasing a past thats already gone is foolish and its way more beneficial to focus on the future.
@@vitriolicAmaranth It's the funniest case of denial I've ever seen in a show. Lol There will be duel monsters(giant celtics, dragons, harpies, beasts and ghosts) roaming the streets, he's traveled thru time, been in shadow realm and been around literal GOD duel monsters and he will still claim something like " Yugi, can't u see its just a hologram. Wake up u 2nd rate duelist, fairy tales are for the weak. It's nothing but mere tech, now let's duel! " Like...wut!???
I know it takes like ten nice comments to make up for one mean comment, so add this to the tally: these Yu-Gi-Oh power hours are objectively making my life better, and you're low-key hilarious.
She has the best takes and is objectively right like 99% of the time. (Oh crap I also use the word "objectively" humorously/as hyperbole, now I'm going to be really self conscious about it.)
I think like 30% of all millennial's are accidental college professors in Yu-Gi-ology. The other 70% don't have to suffer the burden of having had a Yu-Gi-Oh phase that lives rent free in their brain.

I really appreciate this comment as both an index of the video, and brief refresher for the sheer load of Kaiba lore I've suddenly taken in. Thank you.
I'm so stoked that these are back up on the channel. I understand and respect why Karina would private them with all the asshole comments and everything, but I genuinely love these videos. They're so well done, funny, and Karina's voice is so relaxing. I love everything about them.
I feel the same! I think they’re very well done and her sheer level of passion makes it worth watching even though I don’t really have an attachment to Yugioh
Lauren Kramer honey I could really use a wish right now. Cause I wanna be a millionaire, so god damn bad. Cause every time I close my eyes, I see my name in flashing lights. (Not really, I don’t want any of those things truthfully....). I wish I could fill this hole in my heart. I wish for adventure, failure, success, love, belonging, purpose. I’ve lived life so safely and without purpose or reason to try harder than necessary. No passion for the world. I wish, no I need, to have true purpose. Purpose to get out of bed and go out and fail until I succeed. But I’m afraid. I wish I can one day find the strength to not be afraid to fail and to truly want to work hard for myself. To care about myself.
I saw this post on tumblr and I just want to share it here. Yami: Kaiba be my friend Kaiba: No. Yami: Kaiba let’s be friends Kaiba: No leave me alone. Yami: Kaiba why won’t you- Kaiba: Go away Yami: *goes to the afterlife Kaiba: .....what are you doing get back here
Well yes, if anything is true about Kaiba, it's that his ego moves mountains. That ego's been hurt since his first defeat at the hands of Yugi, followed by a near second defeat later in season one. He's wanted to set the record straight ever since and apparently, even Atem being dead isn't going to stop him from getting his win back.
Kaiba is an Enochian figure; Enoch was a pious ascetic corrupted by demons, and, upon returning to his nature as a good man, was physically brought to Heaven alive so that he may never be corrupted again, and instead serves as a great scribe and attendant to the throne of God.
Is Seto Kaiba an emotional wreck, as well as a terribly emotionally unstable? Yes But you have to admit, it takes balls to tell an interdimensional being that just vanished one of your security guards into nothingness "No, that shit won't work on me" and it f-ing doesn't. His ego is just so big that it actually protects him from magic and shit at that point, and that's wonderful to me.

Too bad you didn't talk about Death-T in the manga, It sort of rounds out Kaiba some more and explains why he's so ready to kill himself in duelist kingdom because he's so ready to kill other people too. The whole "To lose is to die" mentality Kaiba has in the manga too is made more clear when Gozaboro kills himself in front of him.
Damn... I was hoping she woukd talk about how it’s thanks to Yami that we have the Kaiba we all love and adore now.. with the whole crushing his heart and banishing the evil thing.
I greatly appreciate Karina going air conditioner-less for this video we all asked for, thank you Also kaiba may be an asshole on a one on one basis, that's fine, not everyone can be as friendly as tea, but think about how much joy he brought into the world with his game company, I mean he made an amusement park, he held an art contest, started a duel school, in the world of yugioh, he has to be one of the most loved figures. I mean better than the arms company it originally was.
I grew up with and pretty much base my opinions on Seto Kaiba entirely upon the English dub of the anime as well, and I truly enjoyed this video. There's just so much that I can say, and I feel like no one will read it. But, this video kinda felt like Karina was organizing her thoughts in case anyone should want to hear her out, because it really does feel like people unfairly poop on Seto Kaiba as a character and don't give him the credit he's earned. I'll try not to reiterate stuff she says too much and keep this to my own thoughts, but I just happen to agree with all of her points. So... some redundancy is inevitable. To be completely honest, Seto Kaiba has always been an important character for me, because I feel like (intentional or otherwise) he showcases and validates the results of emotional abuse and the struggle many people have of letting themselves be happy. That's not everything "deep" or "meaningful" packed into this character, but I relate to those elements on a personal level. I'll reserve my personal issues to this statement only: my mother was intensely abusive to me growing up, making me feel like nothing I did was good enough, and she held my sister to a much different standard; this is something my father and sister have validated, and they remember how many mother would seemingly make a point to aggressively control me and argue with me almost every day. So, I give this preface in order to establish some things: I'm biased towards Seto Kaiba, I probably also read way too much into his actions, and he really means a lot to me too! Like dilfosaur/Karina says, I also enjoy the memes and the jokes about how extra Kaiba is. Because, well, he *is* very extra. But I also feel like people oversimplify him into being just a weirdo with a huge obsession with both himself and the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and they seem to completely forget/ignore that fact that there are valid reasons for both of those things. Again, she goes into them in the video, and I'm not about to be any more redundant than I already am. He's more than just memes, and it's equally valid to like him for just the memes, the character beyond the jokes and memes and any combination of those. Anyway, I thought this video was great, and it was really well organized. So, thank you for making it! I'm writing all of this because of how emotional I felt by the end of it. My relationship with Yugioh! as a franchise had waned considerably by the time "The Dark Side of Dimensions" released, so this is really my first exposure to it. And, especially considering my thoughts on Kaiba, my relationship with the character and that I share every sentiment dilfosaur brings up in this video, I felt intensely emotional hearing how it ends, and I specifically feel emotional hearing where Seto is left at the end of the film. I suppose my overload of emotion being bottled up into an eccentric response that is a large comment can only be expected given how I deal with them (whoops broke the rule on personal issues here), but know this: I was really moved and validated by this video. I already really love dilfosaur/Karina as an artist (and RU-vid personality if that's how I should put it), so it just packed an emotional punch knowing we feel so similarly about Seto Kaiba, one of my favorite characters in anything. As a brief tangent, I love Kaiba's more serious aspects that were covered in the video (as in I love how much I can relate to him and how he grew as a character), but I also adore his unabashed and unashamed love for games, theatrics and the Blue-Eyes. He's so much fun when he's on the screen, and he's part of the reason why I love theater, suspense and making both intense and unforgettable experiences for his audience/opponent. You don't *just play* Seto Kaiba, you *hold nothing back in an all out duel if you have the courage to accept his challenge*. So, thank you again, Karina. There's so much more that I can say, but I'm trying to keep this brief (even if I'm not super good at it). You've always been my favorite part of Drawfee, and I love seeing you passionate about things. It just so happens in this particular case that I shared your passion, and I felt intensely emotional knowing how Kaiba coped with Atem's passing in "The Dark Side of Dimensions". I also wanted you to know that it feels so validating hearing someone I respect say that it's okay to enjoy Seto Kaiba as a character, especially with how I connect with him. Like, hearing how Seto reconstructed the Millennium Puzzle and did so much just to have closure with one of the few people that he connected with... really makes me sad. And I can relate to it in a bizarre way too . So, it's a good thing it's an alternate timeline!! Seto Kaiba deserves happiness. Now, I'm off to go shamelessly love this character and possibly rediscover the original Yugioh! anime. So, thank you again to Karina/dilfosaur!!! And thank you to anyone that may have bothered to actually read this. Considering how emotional this has been, I appreciate it a lot.
kaiba has a sad backstory but hes petty beyond belief...it is what it is..hes a man child....he can't lose and he has an ego and he should of just been killed by atem a long time ago...lets be real hes killed more innocent people for far less
i did read this, i dont have that much to say(upon further observation i do have a lot to say) but while i do think its important to highlight the heavier themes in kaiba's backstory, i believe that what his actions in the show are, in the present of the story, make his character truly shine, he is a great amalgamation of a foil/antagonist/secondary protagonist who goes thru several development arcs throughout the show (i am very rusty on the details since i havent watched it in years) but i think he ends up as the deepest and most tangible character in the original. Like he has a reason that is easily explainable by both his feelings, personality and goals for most of his decisions, and i think that makes him the character with the greatest agency over his fate, which i think is his strongest theme/characterization. Even when he acts good when he's supposed to be bad(i.e. a little out of character)(see him giving everyone a ride out of duelist kingdom for an example) it kind of adds to his depth, like he is driven and kind of evil sometimed but he will not do harm for no reason or act petty over inconsequential(in his mind) things, but will go to the absolute unreasonable extremes if he thinks its worth his time. whoaaa very long sorry for writing this idk what came over me(it was the realization that kaiba, joey, atem and yugi are all great characters that are kind of very original and interesting and yugioh is kind of better than people give it credit for)
Kaiba is the guy who looked reality in the eye, who looked at the path before him, what would be his destiny and said: "No" And he wasn't the protagonist with magical bullshit powers doing that. He is just a businessman in a story about killing an evil god and he still says "No". And that's powerful to me, and I think it influenced me growing up.
As a huge fan of Pegasus, I *love* how he and Kaiba function as foils for each other. They're both eccentric billionaire manchildren, true, but in both personality and design they're complementary opposites: 1. One has a blue-centric color scheme, the other has a red-centric color scheme. Simple, but hey. Color theory. It maps onto how Kaiba is super-serious, while Pegasus is flamboyant and playful. 2. One is Japanese, while the other is American. Building on this, "Kaiba" means "seahorse," and the sea is the source of a lot of divine forces in Japanese myth; the Pegasus of Greek myth, meanwhile, is a flying horse, and in the West divinity is associated with the sky. 3. They relate to the public in opposite ways. Kaiba is very showy and flashy and public, and it's all to show how superior he is to the common rabble -- I can't count the number of giant TV screens you see with his intense shouty face on them. Pegasus, meanwhile, is kind of a weird recluse, with his own fairy tale castle on a private island. When he interacts with the public, however, he's very warm and personable -- I love the "Sam is the winner!" scene. If Kaiba is what Elon Musk wants to be, Pegasus is somewhere between Walt Disney and Willy Wonka. 4. They handle grief in opposite ways. Kaiba bottles it all up inside and refuses to process it, as seen in Virtual World and DSoD. Pegasus, meanwhile, regresses into this deranged childish state after his wife dies. It's all very outward and visible. I love how the Toon World book is bright and colorful on the outside, but depicts a dark graveyard on the inside. Syyyyymmmbolism~ I don't want to blab on and on here, riding on Karina's coattails, but it's something that has stuck out to me as I've consumed more and more YGO DM media. And as ridiculous as he is, I'm glad that someone is standing to Kaiba-boy's defense. c:
and it's also interesting that by the end of DSoD, kaiba ends up doing exactly what pegasus was intending to do by the end of duelist kingdom: he uses the power of Kaiba Corp Technology™ plus a millennium item so he can see this dead person he cares so much about again! and he succeeds! the mad lad!
Something something Relinquished (Archetype basically) in Japanese is Sacrifice and the Duality of his deck reflects his Jovial-ness and the Sacrifices hes made as a person (involving his wife). He is the clown thats crying on the inside, in a sense.
In all seriousness, subjects I'd love to see: - THE CHAZZ - Queer subtext in Yu-Gi-Oh - Digimon opinions - how you got into Yu-Gi-Oh/how to get into Yu-Gi-Oh - other Yu-Gi-Oh media - idk something about the other Yu-Gi-Oh series you haven't made videos about yet?
Kaiba has and always will be my favorite character of yugioh. He starts off a huge a-hole who doesn’t trust anyone, to realizing that just dueling with hate won’t get him anywhere. I think the scene with Mokuba where he wishes Kaiba would smile more is one of the best scenes. Also, in my headcanon at the end of DSOD Kaiba defeats Atem because he finally learned to duel for the love of it and not for power/to beat others.
Also he even gain more respect for Jonouchi because he gave him credit on his duel against, Marik, He even carried his body after losing to Mai (Being drained). I agree I bet he did beat Atem in that duel.
also yugioh is actually among the better of the genre, like, for as messy as it is, it is very original and exciting to watch. Like it fun and over the top but it tells a good story with good characters(ik its not that deep)
My favorite topic to get mad about in the entirety of Yugioh is how Mai is never allowed to be a good duelist; her purpose to the plot is to be a benchmark, she only exists to have other plot-important characters beat her to show how strong they are. Considering she's one of the few reoccurring female duelists in the series, it makes me so sad that she gets treated like such garbage by the plot. I love Mai and her deck is so cool, but she's never able to show it off because she constantly has to lose (except for the one random duel with the movie star guy).
Especially considering she was the literal only duelist in the entire fucking series with some good synergy to it, instead of relying on heart of the cards magical cheating bullshit.
I think my biggest problem with Noah’s Arc is that Yugi is the one who resolved it. This was Seto’s moment, goddammit and they turn him to stone so Yugi can have it.
I love Kaiba bc he’s kinda insane. The dude clears out an ENTIRE CITY to play card games. He beats up an old man to destroy his blue eyes. He revives an ancient spirit just so he can prove that he’s better at the game than him. He founded an entire school thats devoted to card games. He put cards in a rocket and sent them TO SPACE. He screws the rules to pull out an literal GOD on his first turn just to beat some random bully. He’s a cocky, petty, insane piece of shit and I love him for that. Same as you, he’s not even my favourite Yugioh character (I’m weak for Yusei), but he’s the character I can talk about how much I love the most.
I checked out the Yugioh manga a few years back and in there, the mind crush gets explained in more detail (Chapter 40) as smashing apart Kaiba's evil heart into a bunch of spiritual puzzle pieces, so that his child soul needs to put it back together the "right way" without all the evil that his upbringing put in there and it's left on a hopeful for the future point (note: kaiba and mokuba are both way more murdery up to this point).
"slow burn affection for this guy" Pft, the second I saw him when I was like 7 year old I was like "He's a jerk... I love him and now devoted to him." Now I'm 27 and he's still my Anime husbando. So for me it was more like *Sees Seto Kaiba* me: *gets blasted with lava and casted in glorious Kaiba obsidian* Okay I'll stay here now.
"...engaging in non consensual LARPing with him." LOL! Yep. This is an amazing video and you have fantastic comedic timing in your delivery of this quality content.
I think i remember seeing a drawing on takahashi instagram showing a future yugi and kaiba working together inventing games in kaiba's space station or whatever as a sort of epilogue for the whole DSOD movie and i guess the story , but i like your dead kaiba ending better
Kaiba spent probably a trillion dollars to build an elevator that goes into fucking SPACE just to play a card game with his husband. If that doesn't make him the greatest fictional character of all time, I don't know what will.
Kaiba to me is the Yu-gi-oh character with the most depth. We know so much of his background and his drive and what he stands for. And he's such an aggressive character. He's not evil but is very confident in who he is.
16:17: "Kaiba's next important moment is when he duels Yugi." Ah, why do you have to do my boy Joey Wheeler dirty like that? :( Seriously though, love these videos. Such great content :3
My brother and I often joke about Kaiba leading his business in an Elon Musk kinda way, violating any safety regulation he can think of and then some just because (Like, Duel City Minimum Security Blimp, that thing would be a nightmare for the attorneys of some normal company. But nobody sues Seto Kaiba. Nobody DARES.), so being a board member of the most dangerous school is very much on par for him. I go with that ending.
If you want to experience a real life Mandela Effect, theres 9 episodes of an Uncut English Dub with all the 4Kids actors, accurate dialogue, the cards are in Japanese, the OST is Japanese, and theres visible guns.
Ishizu: Kaiba magic is real it's not an illusion. Kaiba: I know I just don't care. Ishizu: then take the mill. rod and accept your destiny. Kaiba: no thanks l don't need that stupid stick.
The most Yugioh I've ever watched was occasionally catching an episode of the 4kids dub in middle school but I watched this whole dang video and by god now I'm invested
Kaiba has a fleet of blue eyes white jets, a space station in the shape of his initials, and made solid state holograms for a theme park named after himself that is based on a card gam. Those 3 points alone make him great Edit: also not many people can rock a mullet and still be cool like kaiba
I just assumed Kaiba went like back in time to duel Atem. Cause like he's got cube particles all around him meaning he can't stay there forever. So he has to go back to Mokuba.
Really silly idea from a fellow Seto fan that's probably my 5Ds fanboy side speaking, but I wish DSOD had Seto whipping out Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon and dazzling the world with a Synchro Summon. But we got Chaos _MAX_ Dragon, so I'm satisfied.
My quarantine life consisted of thouroughly enjoying Satan's cabbage and doing dungeons and dragons. As for Yugioh I recently went through all my old yugioh cards, they aren't worth shit but It was good reminisce
KARINA. What have you done. Chaz Princeton, North Academy's bad boi rich kid has a new catchphrase and it's "You go bye bye"! Okay I know it's my fault for watching the dub but *oh my god*. I used to watch Abridged. GX Dub already feels like a parody though. but i am kind of loving it
It's hard to suggest a topic, because I mostly just hear to hear someone I think is rad talk about something they think is rad, I haven't watched or read yu-gi-oh in probably close to a decade
I've been loving these Yu-gi-oh videos, especially from the perspective of someone with next to no experience with Yu-gi-oh, but I'd love to hear your opinion on Digimon y'know, if you have time
I have not watched any Yugioh ever, never played the card game, knows nothing about the whole franchise and here I am, listening to Karina defending Seto Kaiba
All my knowledge of Yugioh has come from RU-vid rants and video essays, but it seems to me that all your takes are Very Good. Also, I would love to hear you talk about whatever Bakura’s whole deal is, if you have thoughts about it.
Im Not real into yugioh but I love to hear how deep you dived into it thinking about stuff maybe not even the story writer did. But the follow his rival into the afterlife ark is such "alpha" male anime trope vegeta goku to just name one. You always failed to win but now he's dead and you are the best but no no its not that ez after all who cares about being the best it's about win against him and the competitive mindset that drives both of you to improve further and further you maybe never noticed but this kind of rivalry is not even uncommon if your competing always at the same level no fooling around its just what makes a match good and kajba loves the game. Hm how about some hot guy's talk I have to admit I basicly only know it's your own ip but I would love to hear more about it
