I've been a huge fan of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise for many years, mainly through the Trading Card Game and the anime broadcast in America. And while I still find myself occasionally playing the card game, the thing that really still keeps me hooked on Yu-Gi-Oh is the characters -- from the optimistic and fun-loving Jaden Yuki, to the cold and focused Zane Truesdale, to the twisted and malevolent Yami Bakura, and so many more. However, I think one of my favorite characters across all the Yu-Gi-Oh series has to be the Blue-Eyes White Dragon-loving, Joey Wheeler hating billionaire himself, Seto Kaiba.
Positioned in the Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters series as the primary rival of the protagonist, Yugi Muto, Seto Kaiba has become one of the most popular, revered, and quoted characters across the entire Yu-Gi-Oh franchise. And today, I just wanted to make another one of my goofy fanboy-fueled "Why I Like The Thing" videos, wherein I talk about why I enjoy the character of Seto Kaiba! Hey, all! It's been a while since I've talked about Yu-Gi-Oh, and I've wanted to make another "Why I Like The Thing" video for quite a while (and also a video about Kaiba in general), so...here's this! Hope you enjoy! Oh, and also, just to address something that some folks might bring up -- "But Daniel, Seto Kaiba is way less skeptical about destiny/magic stuff in the Japanese dub!" -- that's true, but this is primarily based on my own experience (and nostalgia) with how I experienced the character in the English dub, 'cause that's what I grew up with, and what 4Kids gave us was the guy who staunchly refused to believe there was any truth to the hocus-pocus nonsense until the tail-end of Season 5, haha.

In universe, he’s arguably the most important character across all of the franchise. The man’s extremely unhealthy obsession led to so many tournaments and dueling technology it virtually cemented the in-universe duel monsters sport. And Kaiba Corp was solely responsible for duel academy and likely the duel runner, the latter which seemed to have influenced dueling formats in later series, too (I never watched past 5D’s, so I don’t know if Kaiba Corp was responsible for those formats, but I do know they had things similar to riding duels in form and function). So just like Tony Stark and Elon Musk, Seto Kaiba’s absurd ness singlehandedly changed the course of history for his universe.

The best thing about Kaiba is that he's not just ridiculous in the dub. In the original Japanese, he has great quotes such as "I transcend what can be done with this game" when magic forces give him one of the legendary dragons in the Oricalchos arc.

DONT MOCK ME !" 😂😂😂 Aside from having a crush on Kaiba 😂❤️ he was such an inspiration to me , I was going through some rough time at college and decided to rewatch Yu-Gi-Oh , just loved how Kaiba never lost his confidence in himself after defeat and kept working hard and determined to get what he wanted , He inspired me to srand up again .

@@SuperNerdDaniel I definitely enjoyed the ending where you threw out your pent up frustration, even if it was in a joking manner. Yu-Gi-Oh is known for its plot holes and plot armor, and Kaiba definitely should've won that Duel. But hey they do say the best armor is plot armor.

Some are in Japanese but with translation down don't worry they are few . You have to watch this show it is the tallest , funniest, savage 😂 and amazing one between all of them

8:47 one of the best parts from the anime of kaiba that I love is when the Noah arc ends and kaiba and mokuba are running to make it onto the blimp and mokuba says he’s not gonna make it, so kaiba throws mokuba onto the blimp with one hand and kaiba is like 6 ft away from the blimp and he jumps onto it. In the manga, one of my favorite parts of kaiba is when kaiba saves joey’s life

Honestly I get seto alot. He was abused and left alone as a kid most of his life (like me I won't elaborate or ill make myself sad) he's super intuned and protective of his brother, and his determination even said screw you to reality warping powers. The guys an inspiration beyond words. Also I should mention the reason he threatens the s word isn't because of losing the duel its because he really wanted to save mokoba. His Japanese version is way more caring and polite to others as are many yugioh characters.

In Yu-Gi-Oh GX, there was that lab monkey that was taught to duel named "Wheeler" and I wanna think that Kaiba named him even though the experiment was done in secret so there's no way that a KC owned school would have approved that.

To be fair in Anime land did Pegasus actually survive for real as he appeared in Pyramid of Light, Doma, GX and bounds between time. (He did however die before 5DS) Same goes for Gozaburo as the scene in which he commits suicide was cut for even the Japanese version of the Anime.

3:37 Actually nah, because it gives insight into Kaiba as a character. Like that his deep connection to blue eyes does not come from the shared experiences they had in his past life, but rather that mokuba used it as a beacon of hope for their connection when they were younger. Also yeah, I only really watched the dub and only know about the changes through the internet recapping them for me.

I recommend this video called SETO KAIBA Character Analysis by Valtuem that explains what Kaiba is like in the original manga. I grew up with the 4Kids dub Kaiba as well, and consider that it's own distinct character, but it's interesting to see where it came from. Eric Stuart's awesome voice work just makes everything that Kaiba says sound so cool. I thought Seto Kaiba was so cool and badass growing up, and I wanted to be like him which probably wasn't entirely a good thing.

I always go back and forth about whether I want to check out the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. On the one hand, I love the art style and the whole Egyptian mythology aesthetic, the monsters look really cool and the duels look like fun to watch. On the other hand, all of the stupid things that got changed in the English dub (and oversights like the movie thing you mention at the very end of this video), plus the constant disrespect the series shows to its most prominent female character, makes me wonder how much I would really enjoy it. There are other anime series that I want to watch first, so it'll be a while before I run out, but so far the advice I've been given about Yu-Gi-Oh ranges from "Japanese dub only" to "Original series only" to "Just watch the Abridged version."

That's fair -- 4Kids is often derided for how much they changed/censored from the original dub (like they did with so many other series under their corporate umbrella). All you'd have to do is look at all the ways they tried to take the edge off of the life-or-death stakes in many of the Duels. I think one of the most famous examples was in Yugi VS Pandora/Arcana (depending on whether you're watching the sub or the dub) during Battle City, where Arcana (going with the dub name 'cause that's what I'm familiar with, haha) had both of them locked by their ankles, with only the winner getting to use their key to free themselves. In the sub, the idea was that, as each Duelist lost Life Points, a saw blade would get closer and closer to their ankles, with the idea that the loser would have their feet sawed off and presumably die from blood loss, but in the dub, the saw blades were recolored so they were glowing blue, and were called something like "dark energy discs", and contact with them would just poof your soul to the Shadow Realm. And that's just ONE example, haha.

Also, not to be that annoying fan that every RU-vidr seems to have, but… "What If Yu-Gi-Oh Characters Were Pokemon Trainers" when? ;)

@@SuperNerdDaniel I think that was due to the laws in America against showing things like that in children's cartoons. They had to do that, and things like remove the guns from the hands of the hoods threatening Kaiba in the beginning half of the plot where Yugi has to duel Kaibas "ghost." But most adults who watch just mentally swap that out.

One thing I never see discussed on the internet is that in the manga, Kaiba basically resorts to thievery and/or extortion in order to obtain his there Blue-Eyes cards after he fails to steal the one belonging to Yugi's grandfather. Him having some sort of deep connection to them through his previous incarnation was a retcon. Oh, and also in the manga, Gozaburo literally commits suicide after losing his company by jumping out of an office building window, making it his final lesson to Seto that losing equals death.

Honestly, you're probably not even wrong. Even if you put aside movies (i.e. that Kaiba definitely should've won in Pyramid of Light, like I said in the video, and it's implied that Kaiba may have had a facedown to beat Yugi in Dark Side of Dimensions before Aigami did his run-in) due to the questionable canon status of anime movies as a whole, Ishizu straight-up says in the Ceremonial Duel in the finale of the first series that Atem always seems to draw the cards he needs because his will is so strong that he legitimately influences fate to give him what he wants. The man is using anime protagonist powers to trick shuffle his Deck mid-Duel to topdeck whatever he needs.

Regarding the story of Kaiba's inspiration, as well as how Kaiba actually gets treated all the time in the anime (Worf Effect was in full swing), I think the inspiration was more than just "this would be an interesting character". I think Kazuki Takahashi might have actually had a bit of resentment, and wanted to try and show how being a competitive player was "wrong and bad".

I love kaiba as a character , he was my fav. Cause watching yugi win every duel with one card with 100% plot Armor was boring . Also when kaiba says he'd jump off if he lose was badly written , yugi would have killed kaiba then defeated Pegasus and the. Mokuba could be taking revenge in future who knows , but cause tea stoped yugi kaiba didn't die and in the very next episode Pegasus says ( once we give attack order to cards it can't be stoped ) and now everyone says kaiba did a bitch move . ( It was bad writting )

He’s easily the most likable character. The dude is the very essence of being a badass and overall is a great villain/antihero. I’d say of all the characters, he’s the best written one
