Sometimes the old way is still the best way to get something done. Thomas Construction of Texas, don’t ever forget “old school” in this modern world. We all need to be reminded from time to time.

I guess if you want to get technical, we should use the water level to stay old school. But we were referring to if you’re not using GPS now, then you’re definitely doing it old-school.

Thomas, I love watching your videos. Do you pour the concrete right over the tracks left by the dozers or do you have to back drag the final grade to get it really smooth?
@thomasconstructiontexas
@thomasconstructiontexas 2 года назад
It's best to buy drag to get it smooth. The theory is where the dozer tracks or left, that's the beginning where the concrete will crack

Bill , you overfill grade, compact it , call for survey stakes, cut grade within a hundredth. of a foot so as to not waste concrete which is expensive. a banjo and string line for longer runs helps.

@@centerbuilder7677 I noticed some of these guys on here shut down for the winter. Just too cold to pour concrete. It doesn't seem that way in Seattle.

Yes but how do you set the numbers on that stake? How do you come up with where your grade is? I know how to grade and how to check stakes just not how to set my own stakes

Eye level or laser
@hmmmmm17
@hmmmmm17 Месяц назад
You need a laser level. Shoot the benchmark that the surveyor sets per plan and use that benchmark to set all of your elevations

These days if you ain't using GPS. You're considered old school.

if you call this old school, you must be very young. with a hand level, 100-foot tape, plumb bob, 6-foot folding ruler, hatchet, engineer's scale, and set of plans you could grade the site compacted very close before calling for the survey. there should be no fill as in the finish you cut grade, not fill you are not a grade checker until you can walk on a bare site, go up a natural canyon, ,, climb a hill, chain off from a known point however far away it is, with a bundle of lathe, flagging, a kiel and be able to set up a cut, over-excavation, and/or a fill. with minimum staking to move the bulk of materal and get it ready for survey stakes. I'm retired after 30 years of checking grades, operating, running jobs UNION work.did not have lazer, GPS, or computers. only what fit into our pouch.if you use a lazer or GPS that's not old school.
