Thanks for watching folks This is the process of setting out the front door frame mortice positions and locations, along with tenon interaction and how I determine the shoulder heights of the tenons at the start of the job. Accuracy is incredibly important here.

I admit I had to watch a couple of bits twice, maybe three times. It was well worth it though. Thanks for persevering Oli, and sharing your knowledge. I found this video really informative and interesting. While complex, your approach is possible to follow. All the advance planning and design is so imperative. No room for error, especially with the price of the timber. A big thumbs up and a pat on the back from me.

Probably not going to be one of your most popular videos but it definitely gets a thumbs up from me. I'm completely self taught but I've made my own doors and sash windows. I had to muddle through and take it slow but the results were great. It's good to see that I figured out many of the correct steps for layout and marking up. I completely agree that a full model before you start is worth it's weight in gold. You can check that every joint will work before you start.

Don’t skimp on the details! It’s the details in setting out that give the perfect results that a door like this deserves . I’ve worked with some guys that really didn’t care about precision if the piece was for a paint finish - 2 pac filler on everything 😮. You were very lucky to have a good apprenticeship where you learned these skills as unfortunately I see a lot of guys that only really know one area of carpentry/joinery . Seeing this is inspiring so hopefully the desire to be better is instilled in the next generation

Fascinating but also massively intimidating! I've just made a small mistake using cheap material on a tiny cabinet and wanted to bang my head against the wall so dealing with huge expensive timber must seriously focus the mind. The detail is important. Knowing why you are doing what you are doing gives a better idea of the complexity of this task. What amazes me is how you hold all that in your head and are able to visualise it immediately. (I'm having to stop the video to give myself a moment to understand what you are saying.) Absolutely brilliant video Oliver. Really enjoy the in depth look into producing this door and frame. I've recently finished a set of 7 sash windows and frames with a few bits of 'fancy bollocks', and each one was a different size! Brill video. I love the detail you go into. As a joiner I really appreciate the complexity of the design and that you're not phased by that! I wonder why the design decision was made to have glazing and door rebate being on different sides? I would probably try to avoid that or make the door frame separate from the surround to avoid all the stop and starting of rebates.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 7 месяцев назад
Basically because its difficult it gets avoided, but its part of the prestige of the piece in my opinion. Even the exact same thing made up from square sections and pinned beadings would not be the same for that reason. Breaking up the plane in which the glass sits in makes it more aesthetically pleasing. All about the design on this one. Everywhere you look on it alot of thought has gone into it

@@BradshawJoinery Agreed. I do have some experience making a few, as back in the day I worked 10 years at a window & door manufacturer, in the mill, the moulding shop as well as on the production line. Mind you all the door slabs here are foam filled fibreglass or metal covered. Here in Canada we need them to work in minus 60 to plus 50 degree temp range, not sure a solid wood door would be the best way to go. I am going to keep the frame I have now, only replace or rework the astragal, the last door replacement I got, the mortises for the door hardware are too high & not inset deep enough for the door knob & deadbolt hardware as compared to it on the door slab, now that the door has a ever so small 1/16th inch sag lean the hardware will not go into the mortise. I could shim the hinge side, but not enough space in the material to hide a shim. Or make a rectangular dutchman to fill the mortise, to redo it at the correct height & depth, which might be the easiest way to go at it, other than trying to find the proper sized metal capping that goes on the outside face of the astragal, which I am having a job trying to find right now, & the only part left I need to find to start this job. Either way the poor quality of workmanship on the manufactured door is just terrible, & the manufacturer will not honer their warranty. That is why it is so nice to watch the quality of work that you do, it inspires me to get out there to get my repair/replace work done, even if it is on a lost cause made door. I love the panel saw you have, we had one at my last shop I worked at, it's a great tool to have. Really looking forward to your next upload..!😎

What is the lead hardness of your wooden pencil? I ask because you don’t seam to have to roll the pencil to get a consistent line. Great Video and project! Computer drawings are a part of the modern world. With the price of materials you cannot afford not to pre-build the project in the computer and work out all the bugs. You should consider a large format printer so you can print portions at full size as a layout and production aid. Full sized sections etc really speed up layout. Getting good at the computer prepares you for a CNC machine, custom cutter ordering, etc.

Complicated stuff , do you watch back through your video to visually check what you have marked out as I notice you made some amendments in the text ,very good very interesting

The edititing takes a fair while watching several times through, not to check my work, just to get the video right so I can see if things aren't 👌 👍

I may have asked this before ,what version of sketch up do you use ? The drawings and overview you have produced are excellent .
@BradshawJoinery

Its the pro version, but you can customise any version. I just updated to 2023 version but you have to reorganise your tools and shortkeys so I keep a screenshot and note pad of all the shortkeys now

they can be worked through methodically to be fair, it is nice to set it all out so you may pick up on any problems but there is a lot going on, still easy to make a mistake

Well spotted, when we sketched it out it looks really heavy and too "matched" this made the frame look alot nicer and leaves space for a name potentially in the future
