In this video you will learn how to cast off and moor under sail with a sailboat or sailing catamaran. Also, how to set the sails with helpful tips.
If you've always wanted to learn to sail, these movies are for you. The chapters are structured similar to the basic sailing course in a sailing school. The explanations are kept as simple as possible so that you can focus on the essential knowledge of sailing.
Your Grabner Sailing Academy Team wishes you good luck and lots of fun sailing!

In this video we show you the first important steps on your sailboat - in this particular case, on the inflatable Happy Cat. In just a few minutes, you'll learn how to set the sails, slip the boat - that is, push it into the water - and how to moor and cast off.
To set the sails, turn the boat with the bow to the wind.
Put the mainsail on the trampoline, and hook in the main halyard. Feed the sail into the mast track and at the same time start to pull the main halyard down with your other hand. Two short tricks make it even easier to set the sail:
1. Pull the halyard not only down but also slightly forward towards the bow.
2. Place the luff directly under the mast track
When the mainsail is fully raised, secure the halyard line in the clamp on the mast. Now you can also hook in the luff stretcher and tension it slightly.
To set the headsail, first hook the tack on the furler. Next, attach the headsail halyard to the sail head. Pull the halyard until the sail is all the way up and then connect it to the jib halyard pulley. Now tighten the pulley well by hand. If the luff can be moved less than a hand's width, it has the right tension.
Now it's time for the foresheets: Tie them in the middle of the headsail, pull them through the sheet leads and then tie a figure-eight knot on both sides.
Before entering the water, roll up the headsail and fold down the wheels at the stern.
Push the boat into the water in such way that the sail can blow out in the wind. If this is not possible due to the wind direction, it is better to wait until you are on the water before setting the sail.
The bowman always holds the boat by the bow or bowsprit area before casting off. As a result, it points into the wind and the sails do not generate any forward thrust.
The easiest way to start is from knee- to hip-deep water. First swing the slip wheels upwards. The helmsman climbs into the boat first and pulls the centreboard completely vertically down into the water. Then fold the rudder down as far as it will go. Once the mainsheet is attached to the mainsail and the headsail is unfurled, you are ready to go.
To cast off, the bowman pushes the bow to leeward and also climbs into the boat.
It is best to start in a beam reach course, that is, at a right angle to the wind direction
Make sure you don't start too close hauled because the boat won't get going properly or could even drift back. The centreboard and rudder blade only have an effect when the boat has picked up speed.
By the way, the helmsman should always sit on the side facing the wind - real sailors call this the windward side.
Initially, it's best to practise mooring to a buoy. The basis for this is a good heave-to.
To do this, let go of the sheets and steer the boat into the wind. Expect your catamaran to move about 1 boat length into the wind before it stops completely. In strong wind and waves, the boat stops even faster and thus the heave-to is shorter.
If that works, you are now ready to dock at the shore. Again, the easiest way to do this is in waist-deep water. As soon as the boat comes to a stop, the bowman gets off the boat and holds it by the bow or bowsprit so that it stops against the wind.
If the water is very shallow, you must fold the centreboard and rudder halfway up before docking.
