I miss my '70 Monte. It had a 350 but I swapped it for a built 406ci SBC. The block came from a full sized GMC Jimmy. All other parts came from Summit Racing. Estimated HP was around 400. I had it repainted to the shade of blue that the '80s IROC-Z Camaros came in.

My first car was a 1973 Monte carlo with a 454 big block and was black with a black vinyl top and had black interior with a factory center console with the floor shifter and the thing I loved most about the car is it had the swivel bucket seats and was really great when you had your girlfriend on a back road or on an east Texas oilfield location because you could swing the door open and turn the seat all the way around and have fun without the steering wheel in the way lol😂 sorry old memories. But another the that I found entertaining was that it didn't come with a passenger side door mirror.

I am an original 1970 owner (350 4 bbl auto, PS, PB (front discs) and air). I had it for at least 20 years and kept it as bought except I did swap out the wheels to the rally wheels - those flat body colored hub caps were hideous. And since mine was that lime green with dark green top and interior, the green hub caps looked even worse. I also did add speakers to the radio in the back as well. Mine cost right around 3700 cash out the door in Chicago (I remember because I had saved for it!). The factory did make a/some convertibles although I do not know if they sold any or what they did with it/them. My info comes from the warranty/info book where they had pictures and directions on how to operate the top - so they must have intended to sell them at some point and had a car with the convertible top. The only other way they could have shown a picture is if they used a Chevelle? Anyway, good info - everything else is as I remember - at least for 1970. Everyone (me!) wanted a 4 speed and they just didn't offer it. The only motors offered were 350 2 bbls, 350 4 bbls, and a 454 4 bbl, and all with only automatics. Thanks for sharing!

I knew a guy in the early 70s that had a 71 and he swapped out the 454 and dropped a 427 in it. BnM automatic and that car would run 11 second quarters all day long. Silver with black vinyl top. my favorite car back then

Just ran across this video. Very interesting. As there is a gentleman here in my hometown, longtime well known mechanic. Who has two Monte Carlos. One is a 70 the other a 71. Both triple black , 454 , 4- speed, bucket seats with console. The seventy has swivel seats and at the time 23,000 miles. It had 454 SS badges on the trim. He told me he bought the 70 new and the 71 used for his wife so she had a matching car. He has since passed but I know the cars are still there as I’ve gone by and you can see them when the garage doors are open. Their son drives them occasionally and takes them to local shows. I may have to investigate this further.

It has been too long to remember the details, but my 72 Monte Carlo had a 402 truck engine. I don't know what the difference was, but the Chevy dealer in Spokane, WA, was going crazy because every time they tried to adjust the valves, it burned another one. Finally, Chevy flew an engineer in from Seattle, he popped the hood, and said, That's a truck engine, not a car engine. Adjust the valves for a truck. They did and problem solved. In doing so, they had removed the heads and the mechanic told me how great the engine looked. I had about 120K on it when I sold it and never had any more problems. Best car I ever owned. Chevy engineer said it was made at the end of the year, build sheet called for a 402 but evidently all they had was a 402 truck. Everything bolted up and out it went. Not a standard option, so you probably won't find a build sheet on it. Could you please post that gm web site, my hearing ain't too good.

@@Jared1970Monte I have a book called GM - the first 75 years of transportation products, given to my parents who worked and retired from GM. The book gives all sorts of factual data about many many different GM vehicles and in some cases it actually gives GM production records of how many and what they were. It says the first Monte Carlos came with a 455 Oldsmobile motor because the 454 wasn't available to that production line at the time. Makes sense. Motors were pretty much corporate wide for a long time. Maybe the book is wrong but so far it has been the most accurate corporate information I've found on many different models.

While they did not sell any convertible monte Carlos, there was at least 1 produced by Chevrolet. My 70 monte I had was 1 of the 1st off the line and still had the owners Manuel with it. In that Manuel it showed the picture of the convertible and had the operating instructions in the Manuel. After the one I had was produced Chevy decided to not put out the Monte drop top partly as they decided they did not want to cut into sales of the chevelle, and removed the convertible info from later 70 monte manuels. It was part of the reason the frames on the 70-72 Montes were considered some of the heaviest produced. It was to be a universal frame. Whatever happened to that car I have no idea. Maybe some exec took it.
@Jared1970Monte
@Jared1970Monte 5 месяцев назад
That story has been told but no evidence ever supporting it. The Monte frame from firewall back is same as 68-72 chevelles. The Monte has its own specific front snout.

The car you're likely referring to is owned by Tim Pestinger in Salina, Kansas. It was featured in Super Chevy magazine in 1992. It was ordered by a man that wanted a new 1970 LS6 SS454 Monte. He was told, like all the others that wanted to order one, that the LS6 was not available in a Monte. He ordered the car from a dealership in Wichita, KS and, of course, it was factory assembled with an LS5. He immediately had Dick Harrell Performance Center in Kansas City, Missouri, do an LS6 swap with all Chevrolet parts. I drive by Salina on Interstate 70 at least twice a year to see in-laws. I've not yet stopped to see Mr. Pestinger, but I plan to meet him someday. This link has a great article about the car. No factory LS6 Montes have ever surfaced, and Chevrolet kept records for warranty purposes. Their records, along with the late Fran Prieve, (Chevrolet employee and historian) maintain that no LS6s were factory installed. www.yenko.net/forum/showthread.php?p=1115868
