The Japanese invasion of the Philippines was an essential component of the major Japanese offensive aimed at taking the entire Southeast Asia, launched in December 1941. From the early planning stage, the strategic importance of the Philippine Islands was recognised, as once seized, the archipelago could serve as an ideal stepping stone for further expansion through the Pacific and, at the same time, the protective barrier against any potential invasion the newly acquired in the south.
