Setting Up a New $30 Baitcaster Combo and Bass Fishing With It!

After setting up a new $30 Baitcaster Combo, I take it fishing and catch a bass with it! The first half of the $30 baitcast combo is the Quantum Nitrous reel. I purchased it at Dick's Sporting Goods for $20. The second half of the combo is a Berkley Lightning Rod that I purchased at Ollies for $10. This low profile setup will be good for fishing in spots where a longer rod would be obtuse. The morning after its all set up I take it for a test run and manage to catch a nice bass on a wacky rigged senko. $30 seems like a great deal for a baitcast combo, and I hope to do more fishing with it in the future.

I use Zebco Cajun Line. My eyesight isn't the best, and trying to tie red line is much easier on my eyes than the white/clear line. It doesn't seem to spook the fish like the bright green stuff does. I've never used anything other than monofilament, and never had any problems catching fish.

Alex, great video. I am re-watching this one. I got turned on to Omniflex last year during the pandemic. Went to Wallyworld to restock a few things and realized what everyone furloughed wear doing. Frey went FISHING! The only line in stock was the Omniflex. Been using it ever since. When I couldn’t break the 4lb test I bought wrapping it around my hands I was sold. Didn’t come close to breaking, just cut into my hands 😆

i was using mostly old gear when i really got into fishing this year. was just trying to make it last as long as i could and then i found your channel. i really appreciate these kinds of videos because it helped me learn that i don't need to drop over 100 bucks on my rod and reel to be successful out there. also after watching i know a little more about what to look for when i am bargain shopping. thanks for all the info my dude!

I've never used a bait caster and was really wanting to try it out. I bought 2 of these reels today, 1 left hand retrieve, 1 right hand retrieve because I'm not sure which way would be more comfortable for me. I'm somewhat ambidextrous and just started using left hand retrieve on my spinning reel. I have no Dick's store near me so I tried ordering online. The site let me add them to my cart but when I visited my cart nothing showed up. I called and placed my order after talking to online chat. Success! No cheap rods at my local Ollie's store unfortunately.

Well Alex you got me into baitcasting. I went to Dicks to get this reel. I ended up getting my first even baitcasting combo. I got a Lews American Hero combo. I used it the same day I bought it. It is fantastic. I had a couple over runs because I forgot to thumb the spool but I had no birdsnest. Ots a great easy to use combo that is quality. The best part is some of the cost goes to veterans. Im looking to start posting videos soon. I have a couple just enough to get by cameras. You will be mentioned in my videos as inspiration. Thanks!! Tight lines

My first ever fishing pole was the Berkley Lightning rod and I kid you not, I’ve put that thing through hell and it lasted me 5 years. I gave it to my little cousin because his rod was getting old and the corks were breaking apart. By far, for the cheapest pole, it does an amazing job. Caught plenty of 3-4lb bass and 20+ in northerns.

I have 2 6'0 spinning rod combo's I use now and I love them. Had a 6'0 Cabelas casting rod but it broke when i was trying to get a lure out of a tree. That was realistic. Took it back to Cabela's and they gave me a new 6'6" one. For $10 that rod is a great deal!

What a fantastic channel!! I've been binge watching your videos over the past week and can't seem to get enough of your content. Like many others, I can strongly relate to the 'realistic' aspect that the channel focuses towards. My girlfriend purchased a quantum bait caster rod & reel combo as a birthday gift a few years ago, and I love it! I've caught loads of fish from it including my personal best largemouth of 7.25 lbs! I think the combo costs her around $50.00...that just goes to show that no one needs to go out and spend a lot of money on fishing gear to have a great time. Keep up the amazing work, and good luck to you out there!

Currently using mostly 7 foot rods . For those not used to baitcasting or new to fishing, the 6-foot rod will allow for more accuracy and finer feel. Fished six-footers for years. Still have and use a 40 year old, 6 ft.. Fenwick medium heavy with my heavier baits.

Pretty sure this differs person to person. A tall person like myself could have trouble with a short rod. Feels like I'm casting with a toothbrush.

Lots to say about this vid. First is I love a good bargain. Just got a $60 Lew’s rod from DSG for $20. The combo you got is sweet. Reel looks nice but the rod, dang! I wish my Ollie’s carried that rod for $10 I would clean them out. My first rod after an Ugly Stick was a Lightning Rod. I love the 6’ size for bank fishing around trees and bushes it is just the right size. Great vid and nice Bass to break in the combo!

I was using the lightening, I think 6’6” rod. It fished well, but I kept slamming the tip in the car door... decent sensitivity, good feel for an inexpensive med/heavy rod. Good, affordable rod, I just literally broke three tips off in car doors.

Nice video. I have the Quantum Pulse PL10, that I bought just to have an extra reel. it's not a bad reel at all after you get it dialed in. I can cast it all day with out a birds nest. Doesn't cast crazy far, but for 38 bucks, not bad. I started building a Wacky worm/ Neds rig spinning combo last night. I had to do it on the cheap. I picked up that Same Lightning Rod in the spinning version. I had to pay 39.95, but it was the best feeling I could find for a 6'6" Medium rod I could find. Bought a Black Max size 20 spinning reel for 29.95 and Berkley tough mono line for 7.99. Had Bass Pro spool it for me. Ended up in the 87 dollar range, which was about 30 dollars over my budget. They had a bunch of combo's in the 30-60 dollar range, but all the Medium rods were paired with size 30 or 35 reels, which is bigger then I wanted. Sure wish I could have gotten that Rod, for what you paid. Almost went for the Berkley Cherry wood, but they didn't have any 1 piece M 6'6" models... Kool build on a nice inexpensive combo, that would probably last for years with a little care... Love your Videos Brother...Love seeing cool stuff for cheap.....especially when it works!!!!

I’m glad you got the reel. I wanted to get it but had to make a choice on a reel or diapers. I chose diapers... realistic life I guess! I wanted to ask you a question, but not too sure where is the best platform to ask, so... How do you choose a place to fish when you are fishing from the bank and it’s a massive body of water and it will be the first time you’ve been to. I’m fishing Lake Lanier in GA in a couple of weeks.

First I look for cover or shade and fish near that. If I don't see any docks, weeds, or wood in the water, then I look for anything that makes a spot different like a pipe, rocky shoreline, stumps, anything other than "just water". 👍

I tried omniflex once, and I didn’t care for it 👀 it had line memory worse than my usual Seaguar I use, and was a bit elastic feeling so I didn’t land many fish using it 👀…? Maybe I just got a bad batch but I just prefer using stuff that I’ve got confidence in 👀?

Great video! Do you use ominiflex on all your reels except the ones with braid? Also does 12lb mono cast farther than 14-15lb mono on a baitcaster?

Late to the party by a few days! Goes to show that you don’t need to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a setup to go out and catch quality bass! Awesome video man big thumbs up 👍

been watching your videos for awhile now, I've got one question for you. Is there anyway you could show how much line you spool onto your baitcaster? I can see in the video but that's not a good way to judge it, I've scoured youtube far and wide on how much line to put on, and I can't seem to find a good one.
@RealisticFishing
@RealisticFishing 6 лет назад
1/8th inch from the top of the spool is an easy way to estimate it 👍

I got a zebco pro staff bait caster combo at Academy sports for $39.99. I couldn't be happier with it. Caught probably 40 15 inch + bass on it the first month I had it. Had to restring a few times cuz I'm terrible at casting but it catches fish. Lol

Love the channel! Do you ever keep and cook up any of your bass? Some folks say they're not too good to eat, but I think fresh caught bass tastes better than any of the farmed crap they buy at the store.

Realistic Fishing yep. I have been using baitcastersfor about 4 months now. I can cast it really good but the only thing i can't do is the over hand cast what you were doing. Have any tips how to cast it like that?

I bought a 7ft 6 berkley amp saltwater spinning rod last year for my Penn fierce2 ll 4000 the rod was too small for my reel then the tip broke the first week I took to Walmart got a replacement then the tip broke on the first bass a cought so I ended up getting rod tips and repaired myself. I believe berkley owes me a good amp rod since I have had two and they both broke but I'm not feeling with Walmart returns on it anymore.
