Basics of setting up and operating a total station: leveling, station orientation, backsighting, and shooting points. For the course Archaeological Excavation, Vanderbilt University.
this was really helpful as someone who is a few weeks from completing a forest engineering degree i often felt like i got shorted on total station knowledge. I own a nikon dtm 352 and this video was really helpful
There are two types of vertical angles. The "altitude angle", which is rarely used, is measured from horizontal as zero degrees up or down to the line of sight. Much more commonly used is the "zenith angle" which is measured from straight up as zero degrees down to the line of sight.
Such a helpful video!! I do drone mapping and just got a Nikon 522 to incorporate into my workflow. I’m new to the total station so this was very helpful. I’m just a hop down 40 outside Memphis.
The barometric pressure that is published is at sea level. Reduce the published value by 0.1 per 100 feet above sea level that you are (or the opposite if you are below sea level).
Su Leone, MS Ed so do you enter the current actual barometric pressure or just the published value adjust for for the height above sea level as you stated? In other words, if I have a gauge to check the current barometric pressure would it be best to use that value or is that not necessary?
What if you need to see relatively low to the ground, say, 5 feet in front of you? You’re kinda screwed unless you stand on a bucket. You should setup so that you can look through the instrument to matter what position it’s in.
Screw the total station on to the tripod then holding two tripod legs while bending your knees in an athletic stance look through the optical plummet down at the bench mark. He is putting the toe of his shoe next to the benchmark for a recognizable image. Find your shoe then look for your toe then find the bench mark. The last user should have set the three black knobs on the total station base to the "zero" lines. This makes set up easier.
One needs to use a level and plumb bob to ensure the tripod is level and to ensure that the tripod is indeed centered over the datum. any other process is a waste of time, total waste of time.
OK ... stupid question here: Is there not a way to get the reference horizontal angle using the sun (compensated for the date and time of course)? Should be more accurate than magnetic north (plus inclination) or GPS.
It sure would be nice if the screen was actually in focus once or twice. And the speed of light is only constant in a vacuum. We don't live in a vacuum.
I’d like to know why the hashtags by the angle and sdx on the display screen come up, it can be turned off via the hot key then the arrow right button.
Hello sir, I own a one dtm452c am having problems with the language..one face is in Chinese and the other in English,. But the whole is in Chinese , want to change it to English.. Please sir what can I do?
Hi Steve, how are you? I am a Surveyor and I have a company in Brazil. I would like to know what the job market is like in this area in the United States. Hug!
Don't ever set the case or station on the bumper or on the vehicle. Secure it in a tool box or the vehicle. Make sure you look up at the sky and enjoy the scenery! It can be tedious work but have fun!
I stopped watching at 4 minutes and 6 seconds. The initial set up was totally incorrect. steps one should follow and additional tools required: torpedo level or 2 foot level and plumb bob on a 6 foot masons line steps. 1. set up tripod 2. use level to level top of tripod 3. use plumb bob to center over datum 4. attach theodolite or total station to not use a level and plumb bob is essentially spinning your wheels, waisting too much time
I mean no offense, but I worked in CRM for several years. I never understood, especially in my later years in the field, why we were using total stations in the south east, when out west, every site and "discovery" we made was mapped in with GPS and ARC software. The GPS systems we used were just as accurate and a whole lot quicker.
Except where GPS accuracy drops. I use cm accurate GPS on archaeological sites but in the city and in dense forests GPS precision drops off hence total stations come into play.
total stations are made by the devil.wish me luck....i started this week :D we build heavy steel constuctions and using this tool alot.you can do everything with this....awesome tech.not easy when it goes special. thanks for the video.
Phew! This presentation was excruciating to watch. First, the presenter should have rehearsed this prior to filming, and the videographer should learn how to focus and hold the camera steady. Seriously, by 10:00 I had a headache.
