Bikes should always be ridden - just have to be careful with some of them, Dan.

I bought a vintage 1980 Motobecane of the same model and configuration as one I had way back when I was in university. It was in ride-able condition, but I knew I was going to completely rebuild it. This was my first ever full rebuild. After four months of TLC, and no small measure of trial and error, I got it all back together, the only thing it won't do is go onto the biggest rear cog while it's on the big chain ring, only from the small ring, and then it will go onto the big ring. This makes me think I've got the chain a link too short. But since I won't be using that gear anyway, I'm not going to fiddle with that any more. The bike rides like a dream and will be great fun on those perfect Spring or Fall day coffee shop rides, which is exactly what I wanted it for. That and the nostalgic value.

I built 700c clincher wheels for my '79 Dave Moulton as soon as they became common. Am original owner and used to patch and glue on tubular tires all the time. I almost never used tape. Campagnolo components belong on an Italian bike, but they are harder to get old bike. I saw a Colnago in a shop once with full DuraAce groupset and a cheap generic headset and almost vomited! Keeping my 126 mm 6 speed frame on the road is a challenge! Freehubs are so superior, I modified an 8 speed Shimano hub by cutting down the freehub body and trimming down bearing cones and spacers, cutting the axles down. Got 14-15-16-17-19-21-24-27 sprockets to work that way. The '73 Campagnolo rear derailleur with DuraAce bar end shifters (non indexed) don't pull enough cable for 10. The chain angle for the largest cog would be terrible and the wheel dish excessive. That 27 cog is all that that derailleur can take, and the chainring is 42-52. 10 speed chain, sprockets, and milled crank spider is needed to narrow the chain ring spacing and not jam the chain between chain rings. 11 speed would not work with 2.25 mm thick chain rings because 11 speed chain has 2.37 inside spacing. As the chain angle changes, well!

@rangersmith4652 Год назад
Wow, that's a pretty involved rear hub mod. I considered something sort of in that world for my 1980 Motobecane, but in the end I decided to just rebuild the 6-speed Uniglide freehub, which in itself is no small task for a novice builder. But it works and is smooth and quiet, like a rear hub should be.

Indurain used 180 mm cranks. His frames were specially made for him with prolonged seat tube. And he was using mtb stem.
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 Год назад
Yep, really easy to spot one of Indurains frames with the stretched seat tube, Dan.

love your videos and vintage bikes! When preparing to put on your new tubulars how did you clean off to old harden glue? Would the method be the same for the tape when it comes to time to change the tubulars in the future? Keep up the good work.
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 7 месяцев назад
Glad you like the videos - old tub glue has to come off - generally a carefull bit of effort with a wire brush does the job though it can be a real challenge - tape generally comes off with tyre so much easier, Dan

i love these bikes but cant afford a real one so im making my own up with a DURA ACE 7800 GROUP, my donor frame is ether a Dyna Tech or a lugless Peugeot Triathlon with Decals on there way , love the vids Dan and looking forward to the sun coming out to see what your testing thx again

Nice one Dan. Where do you get your ex-team bikes from? I hear that a lot of them seem to end up in the Netherlands.
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 Год назад
Tracking down real deal ex team bikes, especially from famous teams/riders is a real challenge - loads were lost back in the day by mechanics selling them off cheap for cash at the end of a season and they got rid of a lot of markings. This one came from a good collection in Spain - had been hunting for a Banesto for some time, Dan.

knees hurt with a 21....changes to 24 😄 Thankfully i've got 8 speed shimano 600 hubs in 126 spacing so i've been able to run a 13-30
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 Год назад
I can live with 24 but prefer a 26 if possible with the odd 28 - can get tricky with cage lengths over that, Dan.

I'm 62, and I sometimes ride a 52/39 front and a 11-21 9-speed rear (Ultegra 6500), but it's pretty flat here in north central Tennessee. My favorite road bike is 50/34 and 12-27 11-speed (Campy Potenza); I guess that's part of why it's my favorite.

Hi mate loving the videos,keep em coming,where do you get your frames from (apart from eBay) ??as I’m desperate to source a TIME VXRS in XL but been looking for ages with no success,cheers mate
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 Год назад
Time VXRS - now thats an animal... one of the finest frames ever built. I recall seeing two a few years ago when I was hunting for a Cofidis 595 - oddly, they often get listed together. Other than ebay and contacts, try a google search of images, then click on the image and follow the links, you quite often find pics of available bikes linked to obscure sites, Dan

@@vintagevelos9517 cheers Dan,I’ve been doing that for ages and your right they do pop up but I’ve never seen an XL,I shall keep trying (if you come across one bear me in mind please)although I did get a result while searching I came across a mint look 585 pro issue ,it’s 2nd best to the vxrs but still a first rate frame even by today’s standards,keep the vids coming mate I love em👍👍👍

What’s your opinion of Campagnolo mirage 9 speed groupset? I’m personally 100% satisfied with the function and quality of Shimano sora r3000 and was curious if I should pursue the Mirage as I never have ridden Campagnolo and am on a slight budget!
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 Год назад
Mirage is pretty good - brakes excellent, cranks are very good, derraileurs fine - all just a little weighty in places but perform fine (though super record just is in another level of refinement), Never liked Sora, not a huge fan of 105, big fan of Ultegra/600 and Dura ace, Dan

Wouldn't you just buy the right frame size in the beginning? Its quite a pain setting up a bike that's not really the right size for you,and even when you are finished it's never quite right.
@vintagevelos9517

Yes and no - if you collect ex team bikes there`s not a lot of choice, plus I set up and tweak frames that are my size in the same way, Dan
