Riding a `95 Banesto Pinarello bike ridden by one of the legends of the era, Jose "El Chava" Jimenez and built by the master frame builder Dario Pegoretti was a risk - could it live up to the image I had built up in my mind? Hell yes!
The Pinarello Dyna`s were custom made by Dario Pegoretti in Italy for Pinarello and were of lugless tig welded construction - still a new method for the time and was the at the peak of competitive steel framed bike construction.
In this video we take a close look at the Pinerello Banesto`s construction, set up, then get out there and give it a good ride, including a fine climb, to really get a good understanding of how this Banest Pinerello actually rides, plus discuss the tragic life and palmeres of super climber Jose "El Chava" Jimenez - winner of 4 overall KOM`s at the Vuelta, 9 grand tour stages and was the first pro to win on the mighty Angliru!

I own 2 Pegs, both from the Dario era. I have owned over 100 bikes (I ran a business selling used road bikes from 2012-2013 and have "played" on ebay for a long time). Dario made a special bike, if you have not ridden one you can't understand. The performance of bike is great but I feel it is the position and fit that makes the Peg superior. The Peg puts me in a better position and that is what makes it climb better. I met Dario at the NAHMBS in 2010 in Richmond VA and we talked about BBQ and the differences specific to regions of America. He was a legend, even Richard Sachs thought that. Pegoretti still turns out great bikes but there is a part of me that is really glad I got bikes from the Dario era.

Agreed. Fillet Brazed/TIG welded steel with classic geometry/bars, 1st gen ergo/sti and aero rims. Perfection.

A Pinarello, built by Dario Pegoretti…it’s nothing short of a Grail! I think even better branded Prinarello vs Peg though I do love the Ciavete. Top shelf Dan.

Awesome bike Dan and one of those that’s very high on my list of “Bikes to own one day”, although I doubt I’ll be lucky enough to find a genuine team bike. Thanks for the video, great to get some insight into how these bike’s perform compared to similar steel bikes of the same generation 🙏🏼👍🏼

Yep, I can heartily recommend a Banesto Pinarello Dyna to anyone - just hold out for the top of the range team replicas if possible, Dan

Great video mate! Id change out the bars and seat and it would be a daily rider for sure. Nothing like the junk we see in the peleton today that is full of proprietary parts designed for landfill. Road bikes from the big brands died in 2017 IMO. 1995 -2017 are where the best performing and ride quality is to be found. IYKYK.

Hi Durian, yep, I would agree with the time frame - my favorite riding bikes would be early `90`s through to 2015 - often its build quality and geometry, but I`m happy to ride anything thats racey. Regarding the Banesto, its just so good to ride I`m on it far too much! Fan of your channel by the way, love Postal Treks - hoping one day to track down a real deal Postal team bike but tricky to figure out the real deal, Dan

Dario Pegoretti knew what he was doing! But way too many think Pinarello bikes are so great based on these which were Pinarello only via the decals. In many ways 9-speed Campagnolo, all polished alloy, steel frames with round tubes are the pinnacle of road cycling no matter how many plastic/fantastics I test-ride.

For sure - its strange but like the De-Rosa built Moser team bike we did a few months ago you can just feel something in the way this bike rides - though most Pinarellos of that period (Montellos etc) ride really well - as for carbon comparison thats a whole different question, Dan

@@vintagevelos9517 Hi Dan first after a long drive first day Col D'ornon our leg conditioner then next day Croix du Fer, then we will give the Le Deux Alpes a go followed by a trip to Sestriere (we will drive to the top of the Lauteret after that a day of rest then Alpe Duez to place a memory for an old friend. We like the Oisan station climb which has a good cafe on the way back to Bourg Oisans, maybe have a drink at the Cafe de Milan ? hope its still there and some good food. Will send some pics when done... Cheers Noel and Andy

Awesome bike. I have a period correct(ish) Masciaghi Coppi in Columbus Genius with a pro issue 7410 grouoset. The same bike Bungno used to win the Tour of Flanders in 94. Frames were built by Gianni Pelizzoli and they have what I think are the same properties out of the saddle - it’s just over 9kg but feels like 7kg when kicking up a hill. Compliant and comfortable when seated but stiff and aggressive when you give it some power. I originally wanted a Lemond TVT92 or Indurain Pinarello replica but just couldn’t find anything until yesterday afternoon when I discovered the Pinarello Dynalite model. My plan is to track one down and have it repainted in Banesto colours and built up with Record C and other period correct items 👍🏼

@vintagevelos9517 Год назад
Great move, the Bugno Coppi will be a great ride, but the Dyna... Given the work involved on a full bare metal repaint I`d hold out for a Banesto replica - they come up now and again on ebay and would save a ton of work, Dan

@@vintagevelos9517 yeah it’s a nice machine, I have a custom carbon climbing wheelset (no shiny brake track so mocks the anodised look of early 90’s wheels) and Gipiemme aero wheels for flatter rides. However Indurain was a sporting idol growing up so I won’t be happy until I have a Pinarello. I’ve found a few more potential frames (early Radius, Cromovan) so I’m keeping my eyes peeled. I actually initially looked for a replica but every one I see is the low end ML25 version. A lugged ML34 would work but my preference is a fillet brazed/TIG frame with the extra length seat tube. Part of the enjoyment is sourcing the parts and a custom fresh pearlescent paint job (team bikes were a subtle pearl white unlike replicas) would be nice provided I can find someone to do an accurate job. I would enjoy the sourcing, refurbishment and building much more than just getting a bike ready made 👍🏼
