My art room isn't fancy. It's not even a room, it's an unfinished corner of my basement. This video is not meant to impress anyone, I made it to inspire you to make a space for your art wherever you can. Most of the furnishings are reclaimed or picked up as needed. It's a hodgepodge but it works well for me. I will try and find links to any of the things I mentioned below but most of the things I mentioned can be picked up inexpensively at the home improvement store like Lowes or a discount store like WalMart. Claim your space artists and crafters! *affiliate links used.
Lighting:
I use aluminum clap lights with daylight balanced CFLs or LED lights.
Clamp lights: amzn.to/2FnDDzS
Bulbs: amzn.to/2MUCYKc
*these can also be found at a hardware/department store easily
Heat:
I have a 1500w Eden Pure Infrared space heater. It provides heat in a few minutes and as you can hear in the video gives off a fan sound. An oil-filled radiator is another option but it takes longer to heat up an area so you might need to start it an hour before you begin working. I also have an oil-filled radiator but it didn't feel as warm to me as the Eden Pure. Amazon has lots of options with reviews: amzn.to/2SXSKHV
Storage:
9 cube units: amzn.to/2ZROlb6
Letter trays to store or collect project parts: amzn.to/2ZTxRiF
Moisture mitigation:
I don't know much about dehumidifyers but there are options with reviews here: amzn.to/37xRCPo
We had an interior perimeter drain done by a company that was an installer/franchise of Basement Systems. I am not affiliated with this company but here is a link: www.basementsystems.com/ I'll warn you it was expensive but it was worth it to be able to use our cellar. We have a one-story ranch so it basically doubled our space.
I have not used this product myself but other crafters with basement craft rooms recommend Damp Rid. It's pretty cheap so worth a try if you have musty air: amzn.to/2SWAmiW
Safety:
Radon test: amzn.to/35tVIqi *there is a mold detection test too if you are worried about that.
Fire extinguisher: amzn.to/2MZ6zlQ
*Tip: Unplug any space heater when you are done for the day and switch off all power strips, you save electricity and know all of your lights and appliances are off.

Love the fact that your space is not perfect - so many of the craft spaces we see are perfect (I do wish mine was.....) but totally unattainable for the average crafter 🥰 thank you for being you❣️

I agree!! Mine is in the basement and often just looks like organized chaos!! Although I have seen some Crafters pull the camera back and show their desks! It makes me laugh. Just like the rest of us, it's a mess with a 12 x 12 cleared space to film!

Totally agree. Add me to the list of basement crafters with repurposed furniture. You can check out my room tour, it’s my one and only video...lol because it was so bad! I filmed between projects, so it was picked up for that minute. As soon as I begin a project it gets totally out of control. But I certainly appreciate seeing Lindsay create such beautiful art in a less than perfect space. It’s a great reminder...custom cabinets are not a requirement for crafting or creating art.

Thanks for all this info. I don't have a basement but what we do have is 2 living rooms. Not gonna lie, it was a fight. Hubby's a very um, well, if it's a living room then it has to be a living room kind of person. I'm a, this is our space, make it work for our needs, person. No kids, no family, just us two. So, now our second unused living room is a very used craft space. Made my own scrap box out of a U shaped desk and shelves. Lighting was an issue but I got those craft floor lamps, problem solved. Got the ones with flexible lights so I can point light wherever I need. I'm almost finished with my setup. I took my time with every category and crafted along to way to see if things were going to work. My advice is divide and conquer each category. Tackle and finish paper before moving on to embellishments, ect. Take time to play while setting up. IMO, best way to find out if your set up will work. Lindsay touched on this as well but do a little bit each day. I have a 15 minute rule. I say to myself, just do 15 minutes. Especially if it's a big project because it can seem overwhelming. But if you tell yourself all you have to do is 15 minutes you won't believe how much pressure it relieves. Sorry so long winded but wanted to include these things because all of them helped me tremendously. Good luck guys and enjoy the process of setting up your space. Dream how wonderful it will be once it's finished. Again TFS Lindsay.

After 50 years of marriage, I have a studio! I have always worked out of a closet (2 door style...not walk in). I stored craft items in the top and my husband built in a sewing space where I could quilt,or put the machine under the table space and use it to craft. We built a new home and I dedicated a bedroom to my arts and crafts. I still use the closet, but as a space for my home office and book storage. The room has work surfaces on two walls ( one with a built in sewing machine and cutting table; one wall has my paints and markers and die cutting. The other wall has another sewing area with sewing cabinet and a wall of threads and rulers and templates and a fabric storage unit. I floated a cabinet in the center of the room for my pressing station. It is a mess! Every inch is being used! I am so proud😉

Your idea with the trays works for me; my illness forces me to spend a lot of time resting, so I whatever I'm working on goes in a tray & gets carried to bed with me, or to the patio while the dog plays outside etc. I don't buy new trays though, my frugal trays are recycled plastic packaging. If we buy a family sized pasta bake or lasagne etc, the food comes in a foil tray, then that sits inside an extra plastic tray which just goes straight in the recycling when you open it. I wash those trays & re-use them as my project trays :)

I think it's important for people to realise that furniture doesn't have to match. I see too many of these perfect matching white studios which is fine but not necessarily practical unless you are buying from scratch. Why chuck out perfectly good furniture, use what you have. I am in a corner of our lounge and when we got rid of our broken stereo that we didn't feel like we needed to replace I decided to use the stereo cabinet instead for my sketch books and some of my supplies. The rest are in a tall drawer unit under the stairs in the hallway with my sewing machine stored on top and my fabric and yarn is in an ottoman in the lounge which doubles as seating in a pinch. It would be nice to have my own room and have everything set out but then I wouldn't be near my family in the evenings and I don't think it's good to isolate yourself all of the time.
@emptynestscrapper961
@emptynestscrapper961 4 года назад
Sooo agree! Matching furniture is not a requirement for making art! Repurposing is so much more respectful of the environment, not to mention easier on the wallet. Although it’s fun to see beautiful spaces, as you said unless you’re starting from scratch, use what you have😀

I'm lucky to have finally acquired my own space for my art, craft & sewing mess, but still close to the family room. I'm (very) slowly putting it together, I disassembled an old corner desk & made it in to a double length desk along 1 wall. I also have a big ol' 90s melamine desk to cut up into another work surface atop my 2 drawer filing cabinets & I'll slice the rest into shelving. For craft paint storage, I built handy little square modules from recycled cardboard, empty kitchen roll tubes & vinyl. & wall mounted them. My tube paints are going to hang from cheap hardware store pegboard using bulldog clips eventually. I washed & painted large fruit tins for brushes pens etc,& There's some brush-drying racks too, just 3M hooks holding up a round dowel rod with rubber bands to tie my brushes to, so I'll never be tempted to dry my brushes upside down again - no water running into these ferrules! lol. I scored a 'craft cabinet' with corkboard front on clearance & mounted it on the wall but tbh, I should have saved my money as it hardly holds anything - I like my DIY storage much better :)

Thank you, Lindsey, for covering not only only the organizational aspects of having a basement/garage studio, but also health and safety issues. Lots of useful info and things a lot of us might not have thought of initially but would definitely benefit greatly from knowing in advance, such as the moisture issues and power supply and the radon thing. I live in the south but don't have a basement, but it's good to know things like that in case I ever do live in a home with a basement.

A basket for my current project is a great idea! My husband gets frustrated as I take over more and more of the dining room table through the course of a multi- session project. But a basket would enable me to keep most everything together in between sessions so I can put it away and take it out again quickly.

😉👍🏼you have made great use of your space! I have a basement studio too. My house was built into a hill so it can be entered in the front at ground level into the main house- the back of the house can be entered at ground level into the basement. I am fortunate that my studio walls were completely above the ground so we could replace the tiny windows with 2 big ones. I sealed the cinder block walls & the floor. We have done a lot of the same things: dehumidifier, office rug, shelving a bit away from the walls & radon testing (so important). I use my floor joists overhead for storage too. I enjoy your channel - I firmly believe in using what you have! You give great advice and ideas. I also enjoy reading other comments - there is a wealth of knowledge on your channel!

I use polycrylic on everything woodish. All my mdf, cheap or even good wood is coated with polycrylic. My apartment has flooded more times than I can count. In order to not have to spend money on new furniture I just coat it and protect it. So much peace of mind for such a small price. I recently did under the kitchen sink and when it got wet all I had to do is wipe it down and was clean and no damage. The apartment management is now doing it too.

Love this video. All about "usong what you have" even what ever space you have. I craft in my garage (not attached). Some conversion work had been done before we bought the house, but itstill looked and felt like a garage. We have a few things since we moved in, but financial realities make doing more a very slow process. I really do love my space in summer and fall, but in the winter time it does get very uncomfortable. The insulation is minimal, and we still have exposed beams in the ceiling. I love the look of thr beams, but it really does create heat issues. My tin roof also has a few leaks in it as well. When it rains I put plastic sheeting over my tables and work areas, where I know the leaks are. I also keep my shelving area covered with shower curtains at all time for the same reason. Although there are quite a few issues, my hubby and I have made it work for the most part. I do take my paints and glues in the house inthe winter time for safe keeping. I also set up a folding table in my living room so I can work on some smaller projects during the cold months. I do make "shopping lists" periodically to get supplies from the studio after completing on project so I can start the next. But I also return things to the studio so I have room to work on another creation. Yes I love my studio, even though I know it still needs work. But as you said, no place is perfect, although any place can be in a position to work for you. Thank you for sharing this video, and all you do all the time. And most importantly...keep warm. 😀😀

And I love your new hair although it took me a bit to get used to your new look. The new hairstyle has opened up your face and freed you from frequently tossing it about. Thank you for this. I have struggled for many years to craft in adequate spaces, without dedicated surfaces and proper storage. My family members have often moved my projects (sometimes inadvertently damaging them, which causes discouragement and, usually, abandonment of the projects). I recently claimed part of my bonus room as my work room. I am so grateful to have a space of my own, although it will never be decked out in IKEA or Recollections storage. It's good to know that you and others have been successfully creating in less-than-ideal spaces.

Lindsay, you always inspire all to make the most of what you've got. LOVE IT. We are after all trying to recycle and reuse to save $$ and the earth. The tip I have for you is to purchase a couple of WiFi plug in power switches, to plug your lights and heater, you can turn them on/off using an app on your phone or Google, alexa etc. I bought mine from kmart Australia, but it also means you can monitor it if you are not sure if you left them on and off. I find it a piece of mind that I can check from my bed or the shops if I've left anything on, or preheat your room without having to go into your basement, also you can program a timer with it. I find them AWESOME. YOU can use them with you powerstrip. Easy to set up as well. Fingers crossed your mojo comes back it's full potential.. Happy crafting/painting

Hi Lindsay, thank you so much for your time sharing. Now l feel like l just met you in person. I have been ill for sometime, my elderly years is holding me back from healing; nonetheless, let me share my quest for the ideal spot to learn my new art. I did move my 40 year old large table five times within my small house looking for the ideal spot because l crave for natural light. Here in the CA Sierras, winter is bitter and dark, so l ended up compromising the space in my small bedroom because here the window faces south. It’s pretty tight but cozy, and l use an Oil heater which l can regulate when needed. I’m am like you, very concerned about fires. I bough from Target a nine cube organizer for all my art supplies, and situated it inside my closet. Yes I did get rid of half the clothings, but l finally made it home. My kid said that the set-up of my room reminded them of college life. By the way, my picture in the white sweater is me 35 years ago. ❤️Marie

My work top is an old kitchen table and found armoires. It works more importantly it allows me to work. It also works best to part of my family, my sons have special needs so it allows me to be available to them and to run my business. I am all for “real” space. Thanks for sharing.

I've got a cheapo Harbor Freight workbench in my basement. Wouldn't recommend it for heavy duty stuff. Great for crafting. It's got a light, outlets, and pegboard. My basement is dampish, even with dehumidifier. So I don't store paper done there. Our basement was deepened and enlarged by a previous owner, and the new stairs have these shelves and cubbies. High enough to be out of damp zone, close enough to be handy, so that's my paper storage. I also recommend anti fatigue mats. I worked in a factory, standing on concrete in Steel-toed workboots for 25+ yrs. Always had a mat, had bosses who made fun of never touching my mat. I Said someone who SITS in an office should keep their opinions to themselves. I bought a mat for my Mom to use in her new basement studio. I've got in now.. best thing ever. I also store in higher quality plastic bins, ones with lids that seal and clamp on. I love your studio though. And your vids.

Thank you for this video! You never disappoint. I have been a huge fan for years, and have learned so much. From one basement crafter to another, thanks for encouraging us to use what we have, including whatever space we have. I love watching room tours to help me with organization. I loved your Kon Marie series, and watched it multiple times. I often hear crafters begin their video tours with “so glad to have moved out of the basement”. But I love my corner basement space, and feel blessed to have it, even though I seem to be in a perpetual state of reorganization...lol. I used to craft at the kitchen table, and needed to clear everything away when it was time to prepare dinner. The basement was a stroke of genius. And even though the kids are grown and out of the house, their rooms remain just as they were, welcoming them to visit as often as possible...😀. You are such a gifted artist, it’s a great inspiration to a hobby crafter like me to see someone with your talent create such beautiful art in a basement studio. Don’t get me wrong, I love watching room tours of spaces with custom cabinets and perfectly placed supplies, and I admire that beauty as well, but it is not a requirement. Thanks for sharing your tips on how to make it work with a less than ideal space😀😀😀. Hoping to see an update on your Kon Marie organization, and tips on how to keep it going over time! Thanks again!

I do t have a basement or an attic. I used to use the kitchen table, our laundry room used to have another bathroom in it. Due to an issue with the dryer vent coming undone under the house the floor joists started to break so we ripped it all out. Never had the money to put the bathroom back so it became a big laundry room. After a few years of realization that the bathroom was probably never going to go back, I decided to make it a laundry/craft/sewing room. I could not be happier, although some days I sure wish I had that other bathroom. But it totally works. I even do my makeup in there.

I have converted our walk-in closet into my craft space. It is 6.5 x 7.5 feet square and just enough room for a small desk, a dresser, bookshelf, and a 2x4 kallax unit. I utilize the shelving to store supplies I don't use very often. I have always been more interested in books and art supplies than clothes, so this was a no-brainer for me. Other people may not be able to make a decision like this because it is too much of a sacrifice for them. I absolutely agree with what you said about feeling isolated from your family. I have a raskog filled with my most used items that I roll around with me like an oversized purse. But when I am home alone, or early in the morning, that's where I will be ... in my crafty closet.

We built our house 15 years ago with a sump pump. It works great, except when it didn't. It just stopped working. Water didn't just come in from the pump pit but from the foundation. Puddles in the basement! Fortunately very little in our basement was in paper boxes on the floor and very little of that was damaged (some metal and plastic items were just fine). We hadn't been in the basement for about 2 days and, of course, it was a very rainy period. I resolved that only plastic boxes can go on the floor. My only fear is long power outage.

I used to use the kitchen table, but then i decided to turn my tiny bedroom that nobody wanted into my crafty space. Had a friend build me some shelves and put in some drawers with a countertop and its great!! Space is not to big and works for everything. Warm in the winter and cool in the summer lol.

I’m very lucky to have a crafting room. After our son moved out, our second bedroom was just collecting everything. When my husband decided to make it my craft room, he wouldn’t let me see what he was throwing out. He decorated it beautifully, even hand-painting “Renee’s Rubber Room” on one wall. That was my idea, since I do rubber stamping. I love my Rubber Room! I always enjoy your videos, even if it’s not a topic that applies to me or my crafting. BTW, your new hair style looks great! As for your sweatshirt, we’re friends, so it doesn’t matter! If you’re ever in SE Michigan, I’d love for you to stop by! Renee Drew

Thanks Lindsay for all the advice. My craft room is an upstairs bedroom but it is over the garage and usually cold at this time of year. I also worry about my heat gun somehow turning on inadvertently (not quite sure how but I worry about it anyway!) so I always am checking that my power bar is off when I am not crafting. And I don't know why they don't make more glue guns with automatic shut-off. A strange thing happened to me once. I had my magnifying light near the window (which can be quite sunny as south facing) and smelled something funny, I finally located the smell. My mouse pad which I use for stamping was underneath the glass and was smoking!!! So for those people with a sunny window, beware of the magnifying glass in your light!

I'm in my 70s & I'm ALWAYS cold. I wear long johns, fingerless knitted gloves & hoods/hats year around and I live in the mild NW. When layering, I always tuck the 1st layer or 2 into my underwear or pants to keep air from going up my back. A hat keeps heat from escaping the body.

I love you Lindsay! You have answered so many questions. I live in SC, and in the past years, we have had some severe flooding. My basement studio has flooded in the last two years. I run downstairs and pick up all my unfinished paintings from the floor. Then, I sweep out the water. I need to get those sump pumps you spoke about. Your lighting system is great. Seeing it made it understandable. And lastly, I have a space heater plugged into a power strip. So, thank you, thank you, for that tip. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge.

Have missed this type of videos from you. Great tips we can all use. I have a "She'd" and have to keep the air and heat on most of the year. Its so humid here in Arkansas both winter and summer. Doesn't get very cold but about a week or so out of the year but if you don't use a space heater in the winter is can be very bad on everything. Thanks for all your tips.

Hi Lindsay, Here on the coast of NH (what little coast we have since ME got it all, LOL!) my space is in the basement as well, nicknamed The Art Cave. To get to it I have to go through the unheated garage but, strangely, the basement doesn't get all that cold although I tend to bundle up as you do. (My sweatshirt is covered with acrylics, gesso, mat medium, glue stick..... ) I have a similar rug where I sit and don't worry about it. Originally I was in a spare bedroom but was terrified of having a gel plate go wrong side down in the wall-to-wall. Our basement is large and I use only part but a single dehumidifier seems to keep it dry enough and I've had no trouble with books. No space heater needed but I actually unplug my heat tool as well as turning off the plug strip when I go upstairs. Storage is partly plastic drawer units brought home when I retired from teaching and items bought on sale or with coupons at Michaels. Play time has been scarce for almost a year due to chemo but I'm hoping to get down there soon. Lots of supplies have made their way down and now need to be put away. While I couldn't get my fingers into paint, I was quite able to use them to place orders. Finding good storage solutions that are easy to use, keep things visible and which encourage clean up when done is a major challenge. Thanks for the video!

We are getting ready to get our newer mobile home in place in next few months and I'll be taking one of the spare bedrooms as my crafting storage room! I'm so excited! I hadn't seen your hair cut; it's super cute! Great tips! Re: your basement book shelf, you may want to take a big piece of plastic (maybe cut open a big garbage bag) and drape it behind the book shelf to keep your papers/books from hitting the wall. It will provide a moisture barrier for any moisture accumulating behind there (e.g. before it can get sucked up by the de-humidifier). A moisture barrier might also help under your other units. Our entire crawl space is lined with thick plastic (it's a vapor barrier as well).

My sewing/craft area is in an unfinished basement, too. I almost have "all of the above" of the things you mentioned! Now that the children have moved out my things migrate to the dining table and I get a little crazy! I use old game boxes or soda can trays to be project trays. (Or those boxes from Aldi) I am in Northeastern PA. Thanks for sharing and encouraging! Happy creating!! Also, those puzzle piece floor mats are sometimes at Aldi when they put out all the exercise items. I have purchased them from Amazon, too. My cats think they are claw mats for them!

I"m in an unfinished basement also and want to stress safety. Radon is no joke - it causes lung cancer. So it's very important to check your basement for radon. Thank you for mentioning it! It may not be as much of a concern in the summer months if you open up the windows, have a lot of ventilation, etc. It's always a concern in the winter (in most locations). As you said, an inexpensive test from your hardware store will let you know your radon levels. And as far as fire safety - many fires are started from space heaters, plus they draw a lot of concentrated power and can blow a fuse out easily, so really watch it with the space heaters. A friend burned his garage down when one he had going tipped over. I think an electrician would probably be aghast at how much you have plugged into the power strip! LOL! I use one also, but only plug two things in ongoing. Ideally, you would not use a power strip in an ongoing manner at all, it's not the safest thing and they really aren't designed to be a permanent electrical solution. Here's a safety list for using power strips: Do. Ensure that you purchase power strips with an internal circuit breaker. This is a very important safety measure that is designed to prevent property loss and risks of fire! Do. Use power strips sparingly. They aren’t designed to maintain a load for extended periods of time, and can overheat quickly if used too frequently. Don’t. Ever plug a power strip into another power strip (colloquially referred to as ‘daisy chaining’). Doing this is a great way to short out appliances, or drastically increase the risk of an electrical mishap. Don’t. Use power strips in moist or potentially moist areas. No kitchens, no utility rooms, and definitely no basements. Don’t. Continue to use a power strip if it feels hot. That isn’t supposed to happen! Never. Cover, staple, tack or nail a power strip to anything. Covering can smother the strip, and provide ample flammable material in the event of failure, and stapling can harm the cords, making room for dangerous situations.

I have the opposite problem. I have a 4th garage that I use as a she shed. It’s completely finished with the tile floor and sheet rock walls. It’s wonderful, but I live in Phoenix and frequently the shed is 122° in the summer. I literally have to carry all my paints and many other products into the house in May to keep them from being ruined during the summer months. It’s a pain in the butt, but I am lucky to have the extra space.

Love your hair! I craft in my utility room where my furnace and hot water heater are located. I went to Menard's and bought a kitchen counter and two bases and had them installed on one long wall. I bought a tall kitchen counter-height chair to sit at the counter. It is right next to the utility sink. I also had pegboard installed on all four walls for hanging a lot of my supplies. When the contractor was installing the pegboard, I discovered there was no insulation in the walls. I had the pink-roll insulation installed under the pegboard. It made a big difference in the temperature. The room also doubles as my dog grooming area.:>)
