Setting up flaps, flaperons, or spoilerons in ETHOS

In this video we go through the process of setting up flap, flaperons, or spoilerons on your ETHOS transmitter. This is a pretty simple process thanks to the mixes that ETHOS provides. But, there are a couple of little changes to get them working just nice.
Flaps are used on models with their own flap control surfaces. So our flap mix will be just controlling these surfaces. If you don't want to use full span ailerons, you can use a Y-lead for the flaps, so long as the servos move the surfaces in the same directions. You can use a Y-lead on your ailerons, if you don't want to use crow braking.
Flaperons and spoilerons work on the aileron control surfaces. They are mostly used because you don't have separate flaps. In essence, flaperons and spoilerons are set up the same. Only for flaperons, both ailerons go down. With spoilerons, both ailerons go up. Flaperons, like flaps are used to generate lift, so that you can fly more slowly. However, spoilerons are used to spoil the airflow, killing the lift, and getting the plane to sink.
In this video, I use a slider for the flap control. But it could be a 3 position switch. In that case, you could use a 3 point curve, and use the middle point to tune your first position flaps.

They do feel great in the hands to 🤣 With each new update to ETHOS they keep getting better too. A nice thing I found the other day. If you’re plugged in to your computer, like to use an RC simulator. The transmitter will charge at the same time. I’d always recommend getting one in your hands if you can, no matter which transmitters you’re thinking of getting. Make sure they feel comfortable to you. We all have different physicalities after all.

When I set up flaps I put them on 2 different channels and then assigned a 3 position switch. I put the switch in the first position with the servo arm off. I put the servo arm on with the switch in the first position so it would only move down when I went in the other 2 positions. This seems to work for standard flaps.

Thanks Raphael. Yes, the 3 position switch will work just fine. You can add a curve to the switch to get the right level of flap required. Also there is the slow feature, so that the flaps extend and retract gradually.

Thank you so much for the flaperon video. I have a question , I did bind an ACCST S8R receiver to an ETHOS Tandem X20 HD Transmitter. Everything work OK , stabilization, Hover, Knife flight, but the Aileron servos acted weird, they rotate 45degrees to one direction and only approx. 22.degrees. to check this glitch I bound the S8R to a Taranis QX7 and had the same issue. Do you believe it could be a Firmware issue? Some recomendatios? Thanks Salsordo
@MrD
@MrD Год назад
To be honest, it is hard to say. From my experience, the control surfaces have moved pretty evenly. My first though would be the control linkage geometry has got a lot of differential present. When neutral, is the control rod at 90 degrees to the servo horn? If you disable stabilisation, how do the surfaces act?

When I change the slow down speed in the outputs menu settings, it also has an effect on the ailerons due to both flaps and ailerons functioning off Ch1 and Ch7. I can’t seem to find an option for slow down speed in the mixer menu on my flap mix. Any ideas? Thanks-Ant
@MrD
@MrD 2 года назад
It is a pain that not all options are in some mixes that will benefit from them. If you use a free mix, as opposed to the flaps mix. The slow should be there.
@MrD
@MrD 2 года назад
Sorry Anthony, your other reply seems to have been removed. Of you use a free mix for the flaperons. You can set the slow in there and is has no effect on the ailerons. I’ve just tested it and it works fine. It will only effect both controls if the slow is performed in the outputs.

Man, Ethos looks pretty nice. It’s clearly the same OpenTX interface, but just spending a few minutes making it “pretty” seems to make a world of difference. Plus a touch-screen that actually looks responsive (ever tried an iX12? *gah*)…
@MrD
@MrD 2 года назад
It’s not quite the same. The main coder is the same guy who wrote OpenTX, so there are a lot of similarities. But also quite a few differences. Someone used to OpenTX would be caught out by a couple of things if they tried to do everything the same. But it would also be familiar enough to catch on pretty quickly. For new pilots, it is more friendly. The touch screen is nice. Probably better than it looks on the video, due to the angle I have the transmitter to record. I can’t see where I’m supposed to be touching so well. They keyboard part is awesome too. I’ve not tried an IX 12, but by that reaction I guess I wouldn’t want to 🤣

Was wondering if you may be able to help me out? I'm running a Flysky FS-IA6B receiver with a TX16s transmitter. My FMS T28 has the ailerons and flaps wired with Y cables. How do I get my flaps to go in the same direction? It works for my ailerons but obviously not for my flaps. I will watch the video again, but any help would be appreciated. Also, I can't flip or install the servo any other way without doing some modification.
@MrD
@MrD 2 года назад
Hi Tomas. It depends on the servos on the plane. If they are facing the same direction (not mirrored), they should be ok with a Y lead. If not, you would need to either wire the flaps separately, use a servo reverser on one of the flaps, or open up one of the flap servos and swap some wires. I've not done the last one myself. I usually use separate connections for all 4 wing control surfaces.

Hi RJ, thanks for reaching out. Sorry about the delay, but work is pretty hectic for me at the moment. To be honest with you, I've not looked in to this too much. Hi Darren a question in regard to Flap => Ele mix, I have a 2 second delay to deploy each postion of flaps, going up and down. How could I make the Elevators in the Flap=> Ele mix move with the same 2 second delay? I cannot find an option.
@MrD
@MrD 2 года назад
It looks like that mixer doesn't have the slow up or down. I would just use a Free Mix, set the source to the flaps and the output channel to the Elevator. If you set the up and down weight to 10%, it will be the same as the default for the Flap => Ele mix. I'll add a request to get slow added to Flap => Ele.
@EnriqueIvanHoward
@EnriqueIvanHoward 2 года назад
@@MrD Thanks. In the Flap => Ele mix I set source to flaps and it slowed down the elevator. I had a 3 point curve to set values for the elevator compensation triggered by the same switch as the flaps but when I selected the Flap as trigger source, the three point curve would not work. I changed it to a two point curve, that I think is doing the same , as if I change the curve for the weight option you describe. It would be easier if they include the delay option in the mix.
@MrD
@MrD 2 года назад
Yes it would definitely be easier if the speed was included in the mix. I don’t know why the curve would stop working. You would definitely want to have different movement for the different stages of the flap compensation.

The mix its self shouldn’t be a problem. The only times you may end up with issues is if you are using a self levelling mode. If you are too slow and stall, a self levelling mode will tend to do all the wrong things. Though this is also true without any of the flap/flaperons/spoilerons mixes.
