You guys rock!!! I honestly think that this is the 1st video on youtube demonstrating someone hanging the predator platform at height, and you did it in a saddle. Awesome work you guys! Additionally, I really like the discussion that you two had about where&why you hang your pack.
You guys are the best! Luv watching your videos. By going up higher you could scout out any potential deer coming towards you, binoculars would come in handy. Stay safe up there.🦌👍🇨🇦🇺🇲👍🦌
I think the key is having your tie in point were the angle offers you the most comfort. For me the tree circumstance plays a big role. The perfect tree is basketball size to be tethered into because with a tether I can easily go 360 degrees around the tree. When a tree is very large I might prefer to stay on my climbing line. It gives me more ability to get around the tree. However I like my tie in point to be about head height because the higher the tie in the angle impacts my comfort so is a balance between comfort and mobility around the tree . Generally speaking I favor being on my tether.
great vid again....how about full gear set up in tree and a shooting practice session? I western hunt primarily but find that when in a tree, angles, bubble level usage, etc are different than on the ground. Be cool to see all the shot possibilities in execution to various targets.
Can you stay on the main line and hunt and still draw your bow ok if your line is above you like in this video? Or do u always climb up higher to your ascent line? I could see maybe a new tree having to stop lower n stay down where u have a shot so I was wondering thought about trying srt w madrock and never use a tether just stay on the one line the entire hunt.
Yes you can stay on your DRT rig and still get a bow shot off easily. If the shot is left or right of your tree it will never matter. I can even maneuver where the line runs tight to my chest where I can lean into it for a shot straight out n front of me. The same fashion you would do with a tether. As far as remaining on your Gri Gri you would have to have a back up capture . A Gri Gri can have a tendency to creep when in a static mode for a long period of time. You can also tie a double overhand knot on the bottom side which would alleviate any creep .
what about weight distribution / balance : would the hip thrust be easier for someone that's more top-heavy? In other words, could Scotty make his climb easier by keeping his stand in his pack and on his back, rather than attaching the stand to his hip?
Lately I've been finding myself in situations where I need to have a shot around the tree or I dont want to get picked. Was wondering if you guys have any good ways of incorporating ring of steps with the predator platform? How to use both in conjunction? Obviously you could put the platform on the tree and then ring of steps but curious if you guys have any other solutions to get the best of both worlds? Thanks
We don’t have any experience with a ring of steps. That’s not to say we don’t think it could be effective. We try to limit what we bring in with us . If your climbing mainly tree that are Twenty inches in diameter and smaller . You can easily get around by side loading your platform to shoot 360 degrees. At one time Joe was thinking of carrying one stick to put opposite the platform but we really didn’t see it being necessary. On really large trees you’ll have a easier time getting around if you incorporate SRT or DRT into your climbing style . If your tied in several ft above your platform you can easily pivot around the other side of the tree. Thanks for your question John B. I hope that answers it for you
@@NYSaddleHunter Thanks for the response! Im new to SRT climbing. Love the Idea. I was watching a video about the GRIGRI, just curious when you sit in the saddle and let off with your weight does it really make a clicking sound and if so have you found a way to fix that?
@@andrewcranfield2300 No the carabiner is tied in usually with a clove hitch and we leave about a 4' tail after the carabiner to tie the Blake's hitch to make it a closed loop system. The carabiner clips on to the saddle bridge
It looks like you have some good size dogs and using a predator. I'm 54 and just getting into saddle hunting. I picked up a TL mission but thinking of going smaller with the EDP. What size winter boot do you wear and is the smaller platform adaquate. Also any recommendations for a 5'11 205lb old guy (54) would be appreciated.
Todd I’m 6’ 4”” 220 Size 13 boot. For me personally I love the size of the Predator Platform. It stows perfectly in my Sitka Tool Bucket pack . I split my time between leaning and sitting and never found the size to be a problem. I’m trying out a EWO Ultimate one stick 12” version Then will make a comparison between the two and see what works best . The bigger platforms don’t appeal to me . Good luck !!!
I would really like Scott's take on the new CRÜZR XC saddle. I have a tethrd saddle that I find too small. I'm either going to buy the kestrel flex, or the cruzr for next year. Love your videos guys :)
I can tell you both Scott and I really like the Kestral flex. We've seen most of the saddles out there , and to us Aerohunter saddles have risen to the top for us particularly because of the way we climb. I'm hearing great things about the Cruzr saddles looks like a great saddle. We did see one at a gathering in Pennsylvania. One guy there had one and he was a bigger guy and he loved it . Said it was very comfortable. I think with some of the saddles it's just splitting hairs like with buying bows it's more about what feels best to you. However we both feel Aerohunter saddles are our personal favorites. I will be using a Aerohunter evolution saddle this season.
@@NYSaddleHunter ya it definitely looks it and you guys always steer me in the right direction. Last year I had to use a red/blk colored rope because wspur was all out of predator line. Just picked up 100 feet of predator and some friction savors for this season. Thanks for the discount code!
It’s actually Joes. It’s a Badlands Super day pack. I have a Sitka gear tool bucket. Both packs serve us well for all our gear we pack for a full day afield
Hey Randy. I like the pleat out so I have the most coverage. This works best when using a rope climbing application. If your using DRT. Or SRT to access your tree you’ll need your bridge in the shortest adjustment. Once you reach hunting height and on your platform. You’ll need to lengthen your bridge till you feel what is most comfortable for you. The longer the bridge the less hip pinch you’ll feel. You also might be more comfortable on your tether than staying on the rope if your using that method. Hope that answer your questions
Ok. I fill when climbing with a short bridge its uncomfortable. This is my first saddle. I'm trans issuing from a summit climbing stand. I guess I just need to practice more. Thanks
I would of loved to see Scotty cover every angle with that rope so high above him ,,but actuall draw back like your waiting on a difficult angle on deer on different angles , then draw back when that rope is so tight to chest, obviously ring of steps and tether will make this task a lot easier, I have been hunting out of sling for 26 years, I covered every angle and techniques, but I wish you could show me the request on the tough angles , with that rope straight on chest to draw back, especially when you waited 20 minutes on a deer on wrong angle and accomplish draw back with rope against chest
Maybe for some Erik. I’ve been swinging in a rope and saddle for 30 yrs. I’ve been in some pretty compromising angles making cuts with 3 sections poles for 5 to 10 minutes. And every muscle in your body is screaming for you to stop. Make holding a bow at a tough angle feel like a walk in the park.
J Huntley You definitely need the Flex then. We were climbing with a Flex size 2 Last week. I’m 6’ 4” 215lbs. 34” waist. Size 1 fits me perfectly. But I got to tell ya. I felt the 2 was even better. And in the late season with heavy clothing it will be the ticket. Just something to consider
