Setting up my new Fluval Edge 6 gallon tank. It is the newer version (Fluval Edge II ) with 18 LED lights with 7600K high luminosity and 3 blue LED for night. I used Seachem red Flourite gravel as substrate and flat red stone pieces to create the terraces. I used some plants out of my other tank that has low light (1.3 watt/gallon) so these plants will probably do good: Mayaca fluviatilis, Rotala indica, Hygrophila polysperma. I also bought two Java Ferns for the back corners which don't receive much light. I bought a Cryptocoryne spiralis and planted it in the center so it will receive more light. Also planted two small Cryptocoryne wendtii bronze plants right under the light. They melted back in my other tank so maybe they will do better in this lighting. Added some plant fertilizer and fish tank water. To cycle the tank I am going to drop in a small media bag filled with gravel from my established tank so good bacteria will grow. I can remove the bag after a while.

@matteocom717 Thanks! The plants are really doing well under the led lights. I added some baby guppies and two baby platys and they seem to like it :)

@iguanaberde Well it has stayed relatively clean, there is no algae at all. The opening at the top is plenty wide enough to get your arm/hand in to clean the glass. The tank sits on my desk so it is very easy to reach inside. If the tank was up higher it might be a bit harder to reach in. The plants grow toward the center, right under the lights, so it is easy to clean the glass. This tank has nice look, I would recommend it. The newer version comes with LED lights, and they work great.

@bryan12r I've tried growing Cabomba in the past and have never had success. I really like the look of it though! It needed stronger lighting than my aquarium could offer. I only had 2 watts per gallon, I think it needs at least 3 or 4 watts per gallon to thrive. If you got two regular strip lights for your 10 gallon and each had a 15 watt bulb, then you would have 3 watts per gallon. Also, there are even more powerful T5 High Output bulbs/ballasts available that give off more intense lighting.

I just got an edge and was wondering what plants would be be suited for its light set up. Now I know! Thanks!

@bryan12r If you can afford it, buy the fluorescent bulbs best suited for growing aquatic plants. They only cost about $10 per 15 watt bulb. Some brands are Aqueon Floramax Florasun, etc. You can get them at PetSmart, Petco, etc. The easiest aquatic plants are Water Sprite, Hygrophila, and Rotala indica. You would have no problem growing them. The bulbs do lose their power after 6-9 months, so it's good to replace them then.

Yes it will clear after a few days. It takes a few days for the filter to trap all the fine particles or for them to settle back into the substrate. The tank might go through another cloudy phase as the tank cycles and builds up the good bacteria. Be patient, sometimes it takes 3-4 weeks. New tank setup always look that way at first. It will look crystal clear eventually! :)

I found that the LED lights in this tank are marginal for even low light plants. Until LED aquarium lights gets better in the future I would not recommend them for growing aquatic plants. Hope that helps!

If you set the filter on the lower flow setting then I think the betta wouldn't have any problems coming up for air. I think it would be a great tank for it, it seems to me that most betta tanks are way too small.

@bryan12r If it has two 15 watt fluorescent bulbs I think that would be enough. I do have some LED lights in my Fluval Edge tank and the plants are doing really well. So I think LED lights are great, they are a bit more expensive but they do last a lot longer than fluorescent bulbs so it may be worth it. I would just try the two 15 watt bulbs that you already have, I bet the Cabomba would be just fine. If they aren't growing fast then maybe try the LED lights. Good Luck!

A very informative video, thanks. I have been thinking of getting a fluval edge tank. How easy is it to clean?

For plant growth I use the regular expensive fluorescent tubes (I have a 65 gallon, so one bulb is around $90). Do you think LED lights work well for plants that don't need much lighting?

@freyjafootypaws Just wondering, do any fish stores sell just the back part of the new Fluval Edge (the part where you store the wires, filter, and has the new LED bulbs) in black?

Could you fit a small pre filter sponge onto the intake or does it not have enough clearance from the back of the tank?

Is it hard to use the gravel cleaner with this? I feel like with that tight opening it must be a pain to start it up.

Thank you for the info on the plants and best growth situations! I was looking to get the same tank for my betta but want to ask one thing first. I havent seen the tank in person, but at the opening...is there a decent amount of space open to air, where the betta could come up without having to fight the waterfall? I have heard people leave a 1/4 gap instead of filling it all the way and others have said the fish figures out where to go for air...so I am a little pensive. Thanks!

I found that the most aquatic plants don't grow very well with the lighting of this setup. Maybe plants requiring really low light might make it. The LED lights just don't supply what the plants need to thrive unfortunately.

I have a question I have a 10g fish tank and I really want to make it into a fresh water planted tank. But my big problem is I just got some cabomba caroliniana plant and I don't know what type of light to use or amount of watts for it to not die on me

@freyjafootypaws I have seen allot of people have the 2 Strip lights but my tank only came with a regular 2 clear 15w light bulbs do you think if I traded them in both and got some 25w led light bulbs it would be better ?

the aquarium looks, but i find it very unpractical for a planted type aquarium, bad lighting(for plants) no room to maneuver driftwood, trim plants, set up a decent co2 kit :( yours looks pretty neat tho, i`ll check if u have an update to see if your plants did well :)

I'm planning on upgrading the old halogen version edge by buying a replacement arm. Do you recommend the led arm for the 6g or the more powerful 12g version? I want to grow low to medium plants with no co2.. just flourish comp and excel. Thanks

Yeah, this tank looks nice, but it is not a good tank for growing plants! The plants don't do well at all under the lighting provided by this tank. yes you are right, it is awkward to keep it clean too!

Love the way you set up your terraces. Where did you get your rock?
@FootypawsWorkshop
@FootypawsWorkshop 8 лет назад
+Carrie Allwine I got the flat rocks at a pet store a long time ago. Not sure where you can get them now. They were kind of like a slate type of rock but with more of a hardened clay texture. Maybe slate pieces would be easier to find?

I know I am 5yrs late, but how did your plants hold up under the new LED lights that the Edge comes with?
@FootypawsWorkshop
@FootypawsWorkshop 8 лет назад
Actually not that great. I currently have a new set up on a different tank using the Finnex Planted + LED lights with a controller (you can dim/customize the intensity). They are the best plant lights I have had!

I agree, it is a hard tank to clean. And the lighting is not the best to grow aquatic plants. It has a unique look but it is not that practical of a tank...
