Getting two Sun Ray 2 thin clients from Sun Microsystems running. We'll host the Sun Ray Server Software on a Sun Fire V120 in my homelab rack and get these things working.

It is amazing that you’re looking at these. Brings back memories. I worked with these in grad school and my recollection is that the amazing part about these is that as a thin client solution, they had the best video performance. (We did research on thin client protocols.) Also, I loved the smart card feature. We were able to move from any terminal instantaneously. I think our lab had around 10 of these. I’m surprised you’re seeing such slow performance as when I used the Sun Ray 1, it was pretty snappy. I think we had a Ultra Enterprise 450.
@clabretro
@clabretro Год назад
Awesome! Yeah upon reflection I may have been too harsh on the performance review, I have to remember these are almost 20 years old (and the V120 is OVER 20 years old). I didn't do any type of perf analysis to see where exactly it was slowing down, though I suspect it's the V120. Will definitely follow up with more videos on these!

@@clabretro Could be worse. The V100 had IDE drives and another really slow box was the Netra T105. I ran my first Asterisk server on a T105 but it was really too slow for the job. The V240 should do much better and can incidentally do 16gb ram max.

Around that era the place I was working at was getting more involved in thin/ zero clients. The Wyse boxes we were using could facilitate dual monitors. In 2021 I heard they were transitioning from thin/ zero clients back to standard desktops due to multiple server based outages. They were great to deploy. Very little configuration was necessary.
@alexdhall

You would be surprised that many of those late 2000's Wyze thin clients are still being used in places in 2023. They are very long in the tooth and will grind to a halt if any animations or video is played.....😬

Nice! Yeah I've always found thin clients interesting. They are obviously modeled back on the mainframe + terminal approach, but network bandwidth wasn't realistic enough for full graphics until the mid 2000s. It's also basically the same premise as a web app today, I suppose.

Hello, thank you for these series of videos on these units, I have a few of these I had purchased years ago and just left them in the closet because I could not find any info on how to get them to work. I am not an IT person but I dabble a bit with tech. Is there a way to run these off of a generic server? Or does it have to be a Sunray server? Thanks. I also have a few sunray 3 as well if you would like I can send you one for your channel.

@@clabretro You're right. IBM has done SIGNIFICANTLY more than Oracle, but what happened a few days ago will probably be more memorable.
