Setting Up & Talking About Pandora's Battery: The Legendary PSP 1000/2000 Unbricker

Pandora's Battery was released publicly to the world in 2007 and delivered what PSP owners could only dream of: A method of completely unbricking any soft-bricked or hard-bricked PSP! Once a battery was modified to become a Service Mode battery (aka Pandora's Battery) it could then be paired with a specially prepared Magic Memory Stick for use on any PSP-1000. This also allowed for firmware downgrading and was many people's entry point to installing custom firmware onto their PSP. As this was released just before the PSP-2000 this combination thankfully still worked on most 2000 models, but was patched in later run 2000 models as well as all 3000 models.
Although the latest PSP firmware at the time of recording this can be modified within a few minutes, Pandora's Battery and the Magic Memory Stick still hold a special place in my heart for the ultra powerful unbrickers they are. This is sort of a love letter to Pandora's Battery but also hopes to show people out there how to set one up themselves. Whether it be for fun or for brick protection, Pandora's Battery is still a must have in my modding collection.

i'm still using it ... there is modern MS with all CFW and OFW on the same MS .. i have installed my 6.60 pro C fix 3 with this method ... And i'm sure i can't brick my psp (2K)

i have had my childhood PSP 2000 bricked for nearly 8 years now in the meantime i got a PSP1000 and i heard about pandora batteries i find this video and decide "ah what the heck, cant really mess it up too much right?" and 30 minutes later my long bricked PSP2000 suddenly works again thank you so much for this incredible tutorial!!

I remember when this came on the scene. Some Sony technician left a Memory Stick when he returned a PSP to a customer and they passed along the files to Dark_AleX and he created the magic Memory Stick that allowed the circle to be complete (apparently knowledge of the service mode batteries was already in the wild but without the magic Memory Stick it wasn't possible to take advantage of the knowledge). It was what allowed the PSP-2000 to be hacked day 0. My PSP-2000 only ever had stock firmware from the factory to when I opened it. It's been running CFW ever since.

GREAT video! Thanks for posting this. I just pulled 3 PSP 1001's out of storage that haven't been used for at least 4 years, I have no idea anymore what custom firmware is on them. This is great because I am thinking of auctioning them off so this makes it easier to sell them as OFW installed.

I cannot believe this is still around. When I was young in school around 2008 doing this, I figured I’d be seeing a whole new generation of hacking the new consoles/platforms by now. But turns out, online (gaming) screws everything up. :(

A few years ago I bought a broken PSP 2000 unit that had a shorted fuse and even after fixing that issue I found the firmware had been totally wiped. With just a modded PSP 1000 battery and a microSD to memory stick adapter, I had the firmware flashed back on it and it still works fine to this day.

In the golden days of psp I have done many unbricks and cfw instalation to friends with a wonderful tool that many never heard! Datel battery service tool you just plug the battery click a button and BAM its in service mode, to go to normal you do the same still have that device. LOVE your videos!

Yep! I believe Datel sold a red battery called the "TOOL" which was just a service mode battery for around $20, and the actual Battery Service Tool was $5-10 more. Mentioning the prices because several people chose to go for the Battery Service Tool since you could spend a tiny bit more and just flip your battery back and forth when need be.

Ahh good old times, Dark Alex and Despertar Il cementario. Made one of these for my friends PSPs after they tried to put CFW on their systems. Still have the battery, tho the charge is probably long dead, but it worked when I needed it years ago. Thanks for the throwback video & updating the setup if anyone still needs one.

Duuuuude, you really saved me!! Just decided to sweep some dust from my "granny" an she just didn't wanna turn on, except for the green light. Somehow managed to boot it, and many many thx to your tutorial converted my battery into normal (still can't even think how it converted into pandora, haven't touched it in a year or so, lol) I really wish U lots of health, wealth and trustworthy audience. Thanks for preservation of retro mods. And a note on slim battery as pandora mod, i came across a slim battery which some guy tried to convert with hard modding. It started the console when inserted but did not start magic stick. In the end i was able to solder the chip leg and trace to first state. And one more thing that overconfidence of having pandora battery though. I bricked a psp 1000 carelessly following your old tutorial, i believe i used lme instead of pro. Bam! full brick, but no worries popped my dedicated pandora+magic mms with happy ending

The overconfidence is accurate, I used to full brick just to prove it could be unbricked. Fire up the flasher, begin installing, right when it formats flash0 I'd pull the battery on my system 😂 Then show it was dead as a doorknob and begin the revival process a few seconds later.

Hey Mr. Mario! Love your conetent, I was able to Jailbreak 3 of my older PSP's thanks to you. I was just wondering if this would work on a Model 3001 PSP which I soft bricked because of a botched 6.61 update (got stuck on 99% then had to pull the battery). Plus, I installed infinity 2.0 (because when I checked system information it said 6.61 even though it might've been botched). I can't open anything I put on the games section, it just gets stuck on the PSP logo that shuts off. Do you think the methods you showed in this video would work on my case? Thank you so much!

Just wanted to post an update and TY because I've decided to keep the PSP's due to the amount of games now available since I've last played these. It appears that it's been a lot longer than the 4 years because the custom firmware loaded on them is the 6.39 Pro B7. Best I can tell that is like 2011 time period. But hey, it still works, even with the games I've downloaded onto them in the past 2 days. Question is whether changing the firmware is actually worth it. Your thoughts?

I recently ordered what I'm hoping to be OEM batteries just to keep around for this task. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on ways to properly store them so that I don't end up with any spicy pillows. I have an OEM spicy pillow currently that I'm holding onto just in case but would like to not have to worry about the risk of it exploding. Thanks for any and all help!

I miss my Pandora Battery when I first owned a PSP-1000 and CFW'd to 5.50 Prometheus-4. It was stolen from me when residing Alaska last 2016 and was really bummed until someone pointed me out on Pro CFW, in which I find it pretty handy and doesn't require me to do permanent CFW.

This has been made redundant now by Baryon Sweeper since that works with the 3000 (and late 2000) models as well unlike the pandora battery. On the other hand, a pandora is much easier to make. Looking forward to your thoughts in the video!

I'd disagree that it's redundant, as you said since this is much easier to make at the moment. However Baryon Sweeper is important and fantastic since it works across many more consoles.

@@MrMario2011 Yeah redundant was too harsh you're right. Basically I meant that bswp is the better, more well-rounded alternative from a utility standpoint since it covers all the models that the Pandora does and then some. But for the models that the pandora does cover, it is by far the more practical solution for sure. By the way in case you didn't know, khubik and zecoxao (and probably more devs I'm not aware of) are working on getting bswp to work on the Street and the Go as well! And to top it all off, bswp also led to new advancements in the IPL department of all the non-cIPL moddable PSPs so we should be getting cIPL CFW on the 3000,E1000 and Go pretty soon! Frankly I can't wait. The PSP scene is just nuts these days. :)

MrMario, Great video, been a while since I played with a PSP back in the day, now i'm returning after buying a couple to play with. My question is this, back in the day when installing custom firmware I always remember having to have a copy of GTA to upgrade the firmware to 6.01.....or something around there but you say in here specifically fw 5.00 what is the reason for that and not the latest firmware?

GTA LCS exploit stopped working past 3.03, as for 5.00 that's because that was the last firmware supported by the team that built this.

Hi (again), today i bought a second hand PSP 2004 and, thanks to your guide, i managed to install a CFW (as i did for the street model i own) but, i wonder if i can also make the pandora battery with this PSP 2004 or there is a chance i could brick something ? The battery inside the 2004 is an original Sony 3,6V 1200mA. The fact you're been using a PSP 1000 and not a 2004 is related to... what exactly ? (Just curious). Thank very very much for your help and support !!! UPDATE: I tried anyway (too curious!!) and it doesn't work simply because the 2004's battery doesn't have any eeprom inside (or, at least, it can't be read/written). Too bad... :-( I wonder if i can get hands on a psp 1000 original battery (the fat Sony 1800mA) and put it into my PSP-2004 if it would be possible to create the pandora battery... ?!?

So i recently bought my first psp 1001 happened to get a new battery for it as it didn't come with one or a battery door. but when i went to use it i found out it wouldn't turn on. So i happened to search up what to do and came to here to which i have now found out i have a hard bricked psp but i have no way of creating this battery due to me not owning any other psp's at all i really don't know what to do and could use some help with this as i have no idea what to do now.

Mario, a couple of questions before trying to unbrick my PSP-1000: 1) PSPGrader tells me that there is an error while formatting the Memory Stick in order to create the Magic Memory Stick. Does it depend on the Stick itself? (I would be using a MS adapter + 32GB SD card) 2) I have, as a spare PSP, a 2000 with 6.61 CFW and a TA085-v1 motherboard, which allows "read & write" access for EEPROM (or, at least, PSPIdent says that...) . As I don't have a jigkick battery, is it ok if I put PSP-1000's battery in the 2000, convert it into a Pandora battery using PSP Tool and, after the unbricking, revert back to normal battery? Thank you in advance, and keep it up! :)

Also fun facts: You can do all this entirely on PSP Tool (only needs 500.PBP present cus psp wifi sucks) You can create a Magic Memory Stick without needing to format (as long as your psp can read memory stick)

I wanted to resurrect my old fat psp , managed to make a pandora battery but when I insert the memory stick nothing happens, no orange led at all. I tried doing another one with an adapter and a normal sd card and the orange led flashes for 1 second, I can see the display light turning on but nothing else. I really dont know what is the problem

I remember at the height of psp modding with the release of M33 and Dark-Alex firmware that I was flashing a new frimware to my psp and the back case fell of and I dropped the psp mid update. Was broke for months. The holy grail of the pandora's battery was released. Modded a friend's psp to build the battery and magic memory stick.

In the Test M33 mode you have less free file descriptors so some of homebrew may crash.

Hey there your video is great. Details are awesome. However, I am running into issues with the PSP tool. I was able to get the grader8 to work but when I go to launch psp tool I get an error saying it is corrupted. I have downloaded it multiple times and I know it is not corrupt. I also have low level formatted the memory stick. I have even tried hellca'ts recovery, thinking it was a OFW issue, but hellcat's recovery does the same thing. I have also tried putting it into the GAME150 folder and then nothing comes up. I am out of ideas. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi Mario, I followed all your tutorial to make an pandora battery and the memory card, and all works fine in all mine psps, but in the Psp that I wanted to umbrick it doesn’t work, the Psp turn on but it keep the black screen. It’s an Psp 1004 half bricked. The problem on this Psp is that: the Psp turn on normally but I can’t click on any of the dashboard apps, if I click on any of them the Psp do an little load but nothing happens, I was hoping it was half bricked but I don’t know what to think right now. I hope you have an tutorial to help me.

Hi MrMario, I have a psp 1000 japan model that seems bricked: green led turns on when power on, but black screen and no sign of life. So I prepared a magicmemory with cementario v8 and a pandora battery with my other psp fat (I had a formatting problem of memory stick, so I had to change procedure), and I tried to unbrick the japan one. But when I insert the battery, pressing L button, the green led turns on for 2 seconds and then turns off. The procedure of memory and pandora was done right because I tried it on the other psp. I thought it was a problem about reading the memory stick, so I switched the slots of the two psp, but the problem still occurs. Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance and Great Video !

Hello and congratulations for your tutorials! I bought a faulty psp 1004 that doesn't load the xmb menu but you only see the wavy background and the vsh menu by pressing the select key. I thought it was just a soft brick here from I initially tried to fix it through the recovery and then through the pandora battery ... The procedure is always successful but the problem is not solved ... Can you give me some advice? Thanks in advance!

It’s probably been underclocked. Change the cpu clock speed to 222mhz and it should work at least hopefully

I actually took one of those fat batteries and took it out of the case and was able to fit it in the psp and am able to put the battery cover back on you’ll need to file down the connector to make it fit as it’s a piece of plastic that holds the metal contacts in place

when i try to use the grader it says that the ipl injection has failed saying it has an invalid drive handle edit: if this happens you can use psp tool to create the magic memory stick. just place the 500.pbp into the root file and go on from there

I used to make $35 a pop modding PSPs for people using the Pandora's Battery. I also discovered that you can use a phat battery on a slim PSP, you just have to hold it in there or tape it.

They later released “Expanded battery” kits that included the larger 3200mh batteries and a larger backplate to accommodate it.

I did the old method apparently, a few months ago, to unbrick a PHAT 1000. Opened up the battery. It works now though, it was stuck on a firmware, and couldn't update it

I found mine and it’s seen better days , bought a new battery and charger , I can only remember it updating and it died , it’s just been sitting in a box for years and In my younger years I never knew how to fix it , it’s the 1001 model.I really want to fix it

For those who get an error when injecting the IPL creating a Magic Memory Stick (You need the IPL injected to get the battery to boot), PSPTool is also able to create one, just follow what it says and select the V8 option to get something similar to 5.00. Its also recommended to just install 5.00 OFW via this method, update to 6.60 then install PRO CFW, or 6.61 and install Infinity.

What's the point of keeping the recovery card and battery separate? Can't you just use them as a normal memory card and battery or do they stop working normally after you make the changes?

Me and my cousin messed up so many psp batteries trying to turn them into a pandora battery because we couldn’t get our hands on one. We never got one but now a days is one even needed?

had a friend in the who was into modding psps back in 2010 who used this method. years later when I got into modding my psp I always wondered why the hell he had a different battery during the installation process. Now I know how to recover my PSP 1000 if it ever bricks lmao

What does it mean when it has errors when backing up EEPROM. ALSO when It says unable to write to battery EEPROM? I stuck there I bought a OEM from ebay and starting to think it's a fake battery. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Old school Pandora's Battery is cool ain't it? Although I do have some notes. 1. Old school jigkick battery can work on TA-088v3 PSP 2K (one of the "late" ones) when using newer MMS creators, like khubik2's Jigkick Media Creator. It supports making official Sony MMSes and DDCv9. 2. It would probably be worth noting Slim battery EEPROMs can only be softmodded with an early 2K, aka a TA-085v1. They can't be flashed with a 1k. 3. Will you make a guide on Baryon Sweeper? I think that would be appreciated.

I love the PSP but I came to love the Vita more. The Vita is basically a powered-up PSP on steroids that can do both consoles. I still keep my PSP handy though.

Hallo i made it all but when i had to start my bricked psp , first i turn in the memory stick and then the battery and the psp startet itself ( green ) , but then the green light turns off and the screen remains black... the orange led off memorystick it doesnt light Ps. With the same i installed a cf on my other psp , but it doesnt go with my bricked psp

Hello Mr.Mario, i got a major problem here....i have a bricked psp2004. I installed infinity 2.0 first. It came back with an error.....then the device did not work anymore, cant install the CFW now🤦‍♂️now im trying to find a original Sony PSP battery to flash the EEPROM, but i can find 0 batterys....what are my options....where can i maybe find an after market battery that would do the job?

mario i want to ask something i transferred some games on my psp and i think the wire could disconnect sometimes. during my transfer my pc said the psp got disconnected. so i went and try to turn on and the psp flickers green light and didint turned on. does it mean its software bricked or hardware? im gonna try this method to unbricked this my psp is a 3000

Hey, I just tried this on my psp 1000 with a MS Pro Duo 4gb. I followed the video and everything was fine up until I clickedthe "Create Pandora Stick" button and it gave me a warning: "The IPL Failed to Inject, Invalid Drive Handle". It mentions it could be a problem with the memory stick, despite the fact that I opt for the "Format Memory Stick" option. Is there any fix for this?

They are easy to make. Takes 2 minutes. I used an old battery that would not charge anymore. Works fine as a Pandora.

The batteries work with 1000 to 3000 series so just in case you don't know. 3000 series I have and it works great! Modding psp is easy you can buy a pro duo with dual slot to add micro sd card up to 512gb. You'll get everything you need and it would cost you no more than $50.

The battery will at most boot up a later 2000 series or 3000 series system, but you won't be able to run anything from the Magic Memory Stick. Only Baryon Sweeper works with those.

You must reconnect (remove the traces connect) battery after every battery modification.

i tried to upgrade my 5.5 cfw to official 6.6 from microsd + adapter and i hard bricked my psp-1000 (crashed in the first percents of the operation....). Not sure if it was that, but if i could go back i would order real memory stick. now i am in need of pandora + magic memory stick

Any ideas why some homebrew/plugins crash on cfw 6.60 pro c2? I remember having psp save states ages ago but now it doesn't work, and psprythm crashes when booting I know it previously worked but been ages Psp 1 TA-79 1002 date code 5C Psp 2 TA-81 1002 date code 5D FA0

I just found my old PSP 2001 and my Pandora battery which is swelled up to become unusable. I'm running firmware 5.00 533-6. I must have one of the 2000s that can use the Pandora battery. I'm trying to update it but I'm not having any luck. I'm not sure if I will need to buy another Pandora battery or make another one. Let me know if there's an upgrade for this that I can do without the battery I keep running into errors. At least I haven't bricked it, yet anyway. If anybody has ideas or experience with this firmware updating to the latest I'd be very interested.
