Setting up the trailer to load pigs. They only have a couple more weeks left on the homestead.

The pigs are getting bigger and are almost grown up to a good butcher weight. Today I am altering the pig pen to incorporate the livestock trailer to load the pigs in a couple weeks. We found an old loading ramp that we will use to make it easier for the pigs to get in and out of the trailer.

@ 10:47 you mentioned food just for anyone who watches this in the future my pigs go absolutely crazy for marshmallows !!! that's how I trained them on the nipple waters now they sprint to me every time they think I am gonna give them some

If you leave your trailer in the hog pen with the doors open and give the pigs free access to the trailer and they'll get accustom to it. You can occasionally hook up and take them for a ride most time they're like dogs they like to ride take them to the coffee shop in the mornings or afternoon....

Place the T post on the left side of the shute right up next to it, that way the pigs can't go around the loading chute on either side

In the late winter you can by using hog panels fix an area for your garden and till it using your pigs 🐖 and then a smaller tractor to harrow and put your seedbed right ✅️

Block the side of the ramp so they have only the ramp to go up, try putting straw i in the trailer and scatter some loose feed they will soon go in

Scout: "Daddy! Look at all the bacon I found!" As for the pigs, just lay a thin trail of dry feed up the ramp and a big handful at the back, they'll figure it out.
@roscoejones4515
@roscoejones4515 3 года назад
Dude! You need to align the fence and the ramp so the fence is at the bottom of the ramp! That way the pigs have nowhere to go but up the ramp. Make a couple of pieces of plywood about 3' x 2' with holes cut near the long edge as handles, use them to herd the pigs to the ramp. Put some food in the trailer, but block off the end so they can't jump out. They won't want to go, but the two of you should be able to do it. A third person is nice to block them from behind as the two of you form a plywood chute to guide to the trailer. Pigs are incredibly strong, prepare for a workout. Luck!

You could move the cattle panel on the left close to the ramp then train Scout to herd the animals. He might want a job to do! So cute!

I had a Siberian Husky that was an egg thief, she would follow me around and sneak them out of my egg pail. She carried them in her mouth, and had a guilty dog look after she got one. She then found a secluded spot, dropped the egg, and held it in her paws. She would bite the top of the egg off, and lick the egg out of the shell. It used to make me mad, but it's funny thinking about it now. There was one hog that always seemed to be close to you. They can make good pets. My dad had one in the early 1930's. He had a hammer and was cracking acorns for his little pig. Dad said he was feeding it nuts and it just bit him hard on his forehead, so he hit it hard on its head with the hammer. He had knocked it out. He was afraid he would be in big trouble because he thought it was dead, and went inside the house to tell his mother what happened. They went outside and it was gone, and so was the friendship. Dad lived on a 240 acre farm. It was in SE Kentucky, and was mountainous, It had a good bottom, around 10 tillable acres or so. This was in the great depression, they didn't have much money, but they ate well.

Dig a small trench to back your trailer into even with the ground your pigs will walk right in.

JudithB LOL, my Dad built a slide door panel to fit my horse trailer so he could load calves easier, and it worked well for our pigs too. First time we loaded a hog, we backed up to the hog house and moved the hog to the trailer. He went under it instead, so chased him around for awhile to get him back in the hog house. put a log under the trailer and loaded him. We had a concrete ramp but had not fenced a chute for it. Next time was much easier!!! LOL Then we built a cattle chute with headgate, so we could work the cows. It took time and funds to get all the infrastructure built, but it sure made life easier!!

As a suggestion, try using the slide gate on the trailer door, to close up the area beside the ramp, not as easy for them to escape. Keep up the good work. 👍

You want the door of the trailer to not be part of the pen setup as you will need to close it off once you get the pigs inside. Best to do a little to the side of the door so it can still swing then tie back to the trailer. Wire tie points right on ether side of the trailer and a wire to jump them would let you tie it right into the fence setup without ever needing to move the charge unit.

Keep the next two piggies 1 boy 1 girl let them breed save 1 boy and 1 girl from that litter sell or butcher the rest including the original 2 that way you can have pork on the farm all the time. Many RU-vid smallholders are saying its very hard to buy piglets now for some reason.

Evan you make me laugh...... We were raised on a farm and I never saw anyone try coaxing a pig that way.... too funny..... where is Melissa when you want to hear her giggle too!!!!! Have fun my friend. We love our pork here in Minnesota. Have you ever tried side pork. It's bacon not cured and takes some salt and alot of pepper when frying it. It's usually cut thicker than bacon and it's our favorite. Hugs from Minnesota where winter (snow) is here one week and gone the other.

They say that its better to put the ground rods about 10 ft apart. Close together they will act as a single ground rod. I think your pigs will get the hang of walking up and down the ramp quick. I never even train them just walk them in with feed :)

I hope i can explain this in a way that makes sense, loading ramps like that are typically designed to be used with the sliding door on the back gate. If you shut the gate that ramp should slip in between the bottom of the gate and sit on the floor. then after they walk into the trailer you slide the door shut instead of having to shut the whole gate behind them.
@CountryViewAcres
@CountryViewAcres 3 года назад
My trailer is used and has been modified/repaired. The back door doesn't slide, it is welded together, so it only swings shut.
@arnoldromppai5395

they work ether way,, i use and do the same way,, as him put i funnel the fence to the start of the ramp and use a peace of ply wood in front of my legs.. to push them up an in,,
@arnoldromppai5395
@arnoldromppai5395 3 года назад
@@CountryViewAcres thats the way all cattail trailers are made, the half sliding door is for sheep, goats, and pigs, but most of use have cattal and pigs so it works fine with both, you never get a big bull or steer though them slide door.. i had a guy pick mine up for me years ago, that had the half door slide, what a job to get the steers to push though, so when i built my own trailer i made the big swing doors, one in side..

Hey Evan. Any reason why you all don't butcher until mid-November? Is it based on the butcher's schedule/availability? I ask because here in New England we seem to butcher about the middle of October. Also as others have stated, try Marshmallows for luring. The one's from Kraft seems to work particularly well if you can find them.
