Hello Everyone, following in the footsteps of my Pearson’s Railway Rides Handbook (1991) this railway journey has taken me to the historic market town of Settle. The town was the headquarters of the campaign to save the line from closure back in the 1980’s. The campaign that was organised by the Friends of the Settle / Carlisle railway reached a national audience and there is no doubt that it was the principle reason why the line was saved from closure. Like so many of the stations along the route, Settle Station is beautifully maintained and presented and is reminiscent of a bygone age. It was a pleasure to spend some quality time at this beautiful location. Settle has been described as a railway town and there is no doubt that the railways provided many benefits for the local community such as ease of transportation for livestock, movement of goods and services leading to new business opportunities, and development of leisure excursions by train. It is gratifying that patronage of this line continues to flourish today with regular passenger, freight, and steam trains operating along this spectacular railway which totally vindicates the campaign to save it from closure. I hope you enjoy the video.
