I've often thought about getting a mantis and a few weeks ago a mantis was living on my planter bench on my patio and he was very observant of us lol. One day I decided to get him to come to me and he climbed on my arm to my back which was a little scary because I had never experienced that before lol. Next thing you know when I'd put my arm out he'd aggressively climb on me 😂. Mantis are so different than any other insect I've come into contact with because it seems like they find you super interesting where as other bugs don't really care. He was living by us for a good week. I was sad to see him go. 😕

I've thought about adding a mantis to my gecko setup it would be useful in spring to control the numbers of flies and pests. However, there is no doubt that it would not last. It would end up being prey for Mr Jinx! I'm still thinking about it, but what's the point in spending on an exotic insect for it to last 2 mins with a sharp, robust and super efficient hunter of a lizard?!! It would totally get eaten!! 🤣

Yes 100% Mr Jinx would have it as a snack 😂

I caught a male mantis and kept him as a pet as a kid. I fed him meal worms and he would come up to me and scratch the glass to be picked up.They are delightful and any time I see one outside I cannot resist picking it up. Once I went to a farmers market with a friend and we saw a mantis on a tree . I put it on my hat and we wandered about. Only one person asked if I knew there was a mantis on my hat. I said I put it there. When we got ready to leave,I put it back in it's tree.

I really wouldn't recommend crickets for Mantids, as their exoskeleton is really hard compared to other insects like Dubias. It can cause blockages in their digestion tracks! Also some sticks on the inside leading up to the ceiling, and some soft mesh (not metal as it can really harm their raptorials) along the walls would do great! Being as he's captive bred he's most likely used to sticks and mesh to climb and not just plants. The mesh on the walls would help prevent eye rub, which can be really deadly if the infection gets to far gone! I'm no expert and I'm sure you've done plenty of research! I'm sure he's gonna love his new home though!

Ah that's good to know. I was quite surprised when he opted to eat the legs because they seem super tough. So far he's been hanging out underneath the leaves, so I hope this continues when he moults. He was kept in a cricket tub in the shop, so I don't think he's used mesh yet.

I volunteer with arthropods and have raised all sorts of species of mantises. For our more delicate and/or smaller species we prefer to use larger flies. This feeding technique has proved effective so far. I use crickets for larger mantises.

Actually, I've seen a lot of mantis in the more northern parts of the US. They can be quite resilient and have several varieties. Once in college, I had the window open, and a HUGE mantis just kind crawled into the room and decided to stay there for the night. Not sure if it was male or female, but it seemed pretty comfortable around people. It crawled on my hand, and its leg span was about as big as my hand - maybe a bit bigger. But, the next day, it decided it had enough and went back out the way it came. But it was an interesting little visitor to have for a day. I'm pretty sure it was mostly brown so it was probably a Chinese Mantis.

Hope you enjoy him! I have 5! I’ve seen tons in France and Spain. One thing I would note is that crickets (depending on the mantis) aren’t the best feeder to use. They killed one of my mantids. I would much more advise to feed flies. But that is not to say it will kill yours (it probs won’t)! To tell male or female look at the amount of segments on the abdomen (males have more). They will eat wax worms. :) Great vid love your channel!

To bad! cus I owned a mantis before and I wasn't very knowledgeable with them I found her in my parents old flower garden she was so tiny, cute when i got her but when she was bigger!, she died because when it was too late I told my dad to get a spay bottle to spay her when she Molting, he didn't then she didn't shed properly and passed from that, so, when I get a mantis again I will do all research cus I don't want to go through that all again cus when I lost her I was so sad cus jack was so sweet and easy to handle and I love her so much so I'm so happy so see you get one and let us see you grow on knowledgeable and waching him grow big, they can definitely bite so wach out cus it hurts be aware hah they have a mouth and can use it to defend themselves! My mantis passed away away too early, and btw this was a long time ago that I owned her so wasn't like a week ago she would be old now if I had her now.....

As said by someone else, crickets are dangerous to feed mantids. Crickets can carry alot of diseases and I've seen so many pass away from being fed crickets that it's just not worth the risk. Locusts are a good choice or the best for mantids are flies. Also, the size of the prey was too large, mantids will eat and eat even if they burst open so you have to make sure not to give them too much. Mesh is very important (fabric not metal), it really does help them to climb and to stop them from falling during moult. Also, I don’t believe there is enough ventilation in this tank unfortunately and the air will be too stagnant for a mantis which could make them very unwell, they need cross ventilation. Mantis Den enclosures are a really good example for the best enclosure type. I've got over 40 mantids myself and learnt alot along the way so would rather help and pass on information than something happen to Timothy that could of been avoided 😊 he is super cute!
@leopardgeckotalk
@leopardgeckotalk Год назад
Thank you for your advice, I had no clue crickets were so risky. I saw people recommending Locusts and I figured crickets are softer than locusts. Though these crickets are captive bred and are fed to my reptiles, spiders and ants without any ill-effect, does that make them safe, or still no? To be honest I didn't think he was going to take the cricket but he just grabbed it. Though I definitely see the point of using mesh in a less planted tank, how else would they moult in the wild, if not hanging off of plants and branches? That was my idea going into this, because there are so many places for him to hang out. The tank has a whole air circulation system, which is meant to be super good, so hopefully its okay for him :)

@@leopardgeckotalk Mantises are sensitive to the diseases that domestic crickets carry, but banded crickets are safe as long as you keep the set up clean. Mantises are also generalists which means it's good to use a variety of feeders. I recommend soft bodied roaches (red runners, lobsters, orangeheads, etc.), bottleflies, moths, banded crickets, and the occasional black soldier fly.
