This week on The Horti-Culturalists we take a look at seven fabulous perennial plants that add colour and form to the garden that Stephen grows purely for the foliage that he allows to self seed in a managed way. Some of these plants can be thuggish in the garden, and in fact in some regions could be weedy, so Stephen removes the flower heads before they mature unless he wants to collect seed that year.
The plants we cover in this video are:
Rumex sanguineus or red veined dock
Plantago major 'Rubra'
Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing'
Anthriscus sylvestris 'Golden Fleece'
Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum' or bronze fennel
Lunaria annua 'Alba Variegata' or honesty
Arundo donax variegata
And as Stephen has a thing for self seeders we have made another video about them that you can see here: • How to manage annual s...
And we've made a video about managing suckering thuggish plants here: • How to manage suckerin...

I don’t know why youtube algorithm didn’t recommend you sooner. I am in the US, but everything is very relevant. You could collaborate with more overseas gardeners for visibility. You have wonderful professional content.

Just discovered this morning on a cold sub zero Canberra morning that Anthriscus Ravenswing has the most brilliant snowflake shape when the frost lands on it! Brilliant now and looking forward to summer also!

I don’t eat fennel, but grow it as an ornamental and host plant for butterflies.

Hi both! Another great video and sending love from Spain! I follow you from almost the beginning and your videos only get better and the topics more interesting, gracias! My question is: if you had to start your garden all over again, knowing what you know, what would be the main difference? Thanks!

I must be one of the few that has trouble growing Anthriscus ravenswing :( I'm also in Central Vic but closer to Castlemaine, so maybe it's something to do with climate? Regarding the name 'honesty', I remember being told by my Grandmother that the name was because the seeds were visible through the translucent pods. Thanks for another lovely video gents 🙏🌱

I like the seed being visible theory! Ra Venus Wing does need despise moist soil to flourish so perhaps that is your problem in Castlemaine. Regards Stephen

I thought my perennial of many years, rumex sanguineus died this summer from drought, so I bought some seeds to sow, and then it popped up this fall.

I don't mind two tone green variagation or perhaps pink, but, yellow or white variagation just looks like a sick plant to me. No one needed to know that but I said it anyway.

OK.... Now that I have seen the last plant, I've taken a liking to the colours, perhaps because I adore blue foliage.

All very pretty. Your garden does look lovely and healthy and a joy to see. I just cut back the snail eaten fronds of a large Cast Iron plant in an enormous pot that the potting mix had sunk at least 6 or 7". I placed a King Protea I bought Tuesday on top alongside two other plants, a tree Dahlia and what I think is the very large growing Fushias and topped to pot back up. My question.... Will the Cast Iron plant survive having 6" of potting mix covering the base. Adelaide South Australia.

Hi, I am Kimutai Katwa a gardener from Kenya, been following you since the Iochroma video. My questions, Won't picking seeds from only one plant each year cause inbreeding depression over time? and, I read somewhere that Arundo Donax seeds are sterile except in their natural habitat, any truth to that?
@thehorti-culturalists
@thehorti-culturalists Год назад
Even though you could collect seed from the one plant each year it is likely pollinated by others in the garden so no issue. As far as Around is concerned I really don't know about its viability from seed. Regards Stephen
