I used to overthink heavily when mixing...it was nightmare...once i decided to create groups for example...Drums,Orchestral,Electronic...make good decision cutting all the groups with Еq and Compression,my music now sounds a lot better and bigger :) Sometimes you must think the bigger picture ! Thank you for the help...i saw in your videos this technique that your are using groups, helped a lot !
Hi Alex, tip number 7 is brilliant, I do tend to start a track from the intro, now I know why the finale didn’t have the impact I wanted. Thanks for these great tips.
Everybody has a different approach to composition. I do tend to this issue but I can't help starting from the intro: building a track from the main part doesn't work for me. But when I realize I can't go further, I do also know that the track is almost done. I already have the intro and the backend, the main part comes from reducing the ending to a smaller version of the actual ending.
5:00 the most illusory part of daw composition is the tutti. Everything can sound full, and you forget to compose the filling by natural laziness. But the other problem is: it is so easy to just ad tracks and choirs so you never compose something simple anymore!
I do have a question. Where would you start ? Did you took courses on this subject or did you read some books? Its all so overwhelming and my mind is all over the place all the time… 😅
You can listen to lots of trailer music. You can also check a few of links below the video and I can help you with that. Let me know if you have any other questions.
the idea if composing other parts first is a very good exercise and technique to have in the pocket , and easier to apply in sh0rt pieces. But itis enough to always start in such a way that you know you are not using and the principal and strongest elements, although it is hard to explain what it is exactly .Because Brahms 3 Symphl starts very punchy, and so many others . But some brass sounds are always waiting for the right moment. In more brass based music the cimbasso or ct bassoon could be such instruments adding an unexpected fullness, principally in the so called „epic“ music. This is why i hate choirs saying nothing from start to end in every track; ,a choir is the most especial thing, one i just used one time in public until now, after 20 minutes music.
Hello, I have a question ? When I make people listen to my compositions, they always have images of films running through their heads, whereas when I listen to my music, I just hear what doesn't work, what I could or should have done. Basically I only listen to the technical details. Am I normal ?
Hey Amy, thanks so much for your message! Haha, you are perfectly normal! First of all, as the creator of your own music you perfectly know all the technical details you have gone through. What happens then is that you want to avoid someone saying something bad about your music, so you always think about on how to improve it. The proof that your music works is that people listen to it and have all kinds of imaginations such as films etc. - that's perfect, that's your goal :) Additionally we have that inner fear that we could fail and that's why you always think about the technical details and stuff. It is a process. How about listening to your music and create a little list by writing down all the things you don't like so you have it out of your head. It is important to write it down so you literally pulled it out of your head. Then tell yourself that you are aware of what to improve and that you wrote it down ... and NOW you want to listen to your music to imagine some film scene in your head. It is a process but it will come over time :)
It be gret if you could show exemples. Maybe ppl can send you thier work and you can make vdo about it and criticize then like whats good ehat not so good exetera 😉
