Seven Things You Should NOT Do at Youth Group 

DO talk to the new kid. A couple of my closest friends were "the new girl" and I am really glad I talked to them.

I’m the new kid, I have been going for almost a year and I still don’t have any friends there. I stopped going because I don’t think anybody wants me there and because of depression, anxiety and cutting. nobody likes me. nobody talks to me either. If I try to talk to anyone they just sort of nod and back away. I don’t know what I did to make everyone do that. i don’t know why nobody likes me. I don’t know why. And there are a few people (not really friends) at a church conference I go to every single year. I found out that they gossiped about me and all that stuff. Nobody likes me. So please talk to the new kid. I just want a friend and a safe place I’m sorry if that to much to ask. Don’t ignore people. Please it really really hurts.

Okay... No. Talk to the new kid!! They feel awkward and weird because they're new and everyone else has their friends. Sincerely The experienced new kid at youth group.

I think you should talk to the new kids... Why wouldn't you do that? I feel bad for new kids that come in, because they always sit by themselves and I understand how it feels to be the outcast.

Two issues with this video: 1. Asking your youth pastor questions in an appropriate manner is just fine, as long as it's a genuine question. 2. Of course you should introduce yourself to the new kid in youth group and introduce him/her to everyone! They're definitely not gonna come back if they don't feel welcome, and being there to learn more about Christ is what it's all about anyway, so your fellowship should be just as Christ-like.

Ugh, youth group couples are the worst!

I quit going to youth group for two reasons: The first was covered in this video. Competition can be fun, but not when people take it way too seriously. I began coming to youth group infrequently when they split us into color-coded teams. I get that the youth group had gotten rather large and they needed a way to split us up into groups, but making us compete against each other wasn't my cup of tea, especially when my good friends were way too competitive and it was bleeding over into our friendships. The nail in the coffin though was when one of my good friends came out as gay, privately to our youth pastor and not only did he not keep her confidence, but he basically freaked out. He told her she couldn't come back unless she went to counseling, he informed all the other youth leaders, and then began implementing strict dress codes specifically banning all the things that she liked to wear. Then he went and told all the parents of the girls she was friends with. When she finally did abandon the church after trying very hard to follow all of his rules (weeks after I refused to attend anymore), he told the youth that they should shun her. To this day there are still people in that church that, if they should run into her at a coffee shop, will turn and walk away. I found the whole thing so shameful and disgusting.

Nooooo please help the new kids!! They only stop coming because they don't feel like a part of the group!! I have been looking for a good youth group for the past year and, 7 youth groups later, have come up empty handed because I want to make friends and have a good time, but no one bothers to pay attention to anyone outside their little group. Do you know how annoying that is? Do you know how much it hurts? For half of last year, I thought that something must be terribly wrong with me, since nobody seems to notice when I talk to them.

As for not talking to the new kids... I'm sorry, but I have to heartily disagree with you. Talking to new kids, making them feel welcome, is how we bring them to Christ. If we don't include them, they might never be saved, just because you didn't want to "waste your time" introducing them to people. That's not ok, under any circumstances.

My youth group is like 99% people I'm related to... we are all tactless and if others came we'd probably scare them away by accident.

Once I intercepted our youth group couple by flinging by arms over both of them and saying "Hey guys, what's up!" just as the girl was murmuring something to the boy. The shock and then frown on their faces was a picture....! It was a great moment.

Fun fact: My little sister was actually named Rachel Joy after my parents heard the story of Rachel Scott.

don't talk to the new kid? and you wonder why they don't ever come back. i mean they're young and insecure and in a new place. add being shunned to the mix and of course they're not going to come back. basically that's pretty terrible advice.

You should add two more things. Never insult other people in the youth group, and never threaten to punch them in the face. Seriously, this happened in my youth group.

I guess I am the new kid. I had been going about 3 years ago when I was in public school, then when i started doing homeschool I just hadn't had time. This last year has been really hard for me. My mom got hit by a drunk driver and I had been working for my local Rangeland fire department working fires all across Oregon and Idaho. I had a pretty stressful year to be honest and some of the things that I saw when I was working fires made me think about youth group again. Now that fire season is winding down and I have more time, I went last week. It was fun, I had some smoke in my lungs so i was coughing some. (luckily they didn't call the Covid police!) But overall it was fun, I recognized some kids from my old class but I don't think they recognized me. lol, I do look a lot different. But I am happy to start going back to Youth Group!

Rachel's uncle came to my middle school to talk about that day and her life and it had such a huge impact on me. The fact that she was a Christian and put her faith on the line on that day. I hope this movie lives up to that unforgettable day. Great episode as always.

Ummmm Have you ever thought that the reason the new kid doesn't come back is that no one talks to him/her. But if you guys talk to him/her, maybe they will come back. And it's never a waste of time to share the love of Jesus with others.

Edit: Maybe this is sarcasm. But you sometimes post real advice and sometimes sarcasm, so it's hard to tell when you're being truthful or just sarcastic. This can easily be taken for real advice, especially since you mix in good things like "Don't gossip". If you're gonna be sarcastic, you have to make it WAY, WAY more obvious. Anyway...I don't know what youth group you can from, but my parents and our church are totally fine with relationships, kissing, etc.-just no "doing it" until marriage. If you meet someone you might want to marry, OF COURSE pursue a relationship, provided you're ready and friends with them first. And if you have questions about The Bible, your youth pastor is literally THE person to go to! Who else would you go to for spiritual guidance or questions?! And "don't be too vulnerable"?! Asking for prayer is a GREAT thing to do, and sharing your hardships is what you're SUPPOSED TO DO! And "don't talk to the new kid"?! That's just mean! They're new, they sure won't come back if everyone ignores them! Make them feel welcome! They probably feel awkward, introducing them and getting them settled is not only the nicest thing to do, but it's what God would want you to do-He wants you to BRING new people to the faith!

"Not being vulnerable" has lead to a lot of issues in my life cuz I refuse to say anything about my issue to anyone until one day they just explode and somebody gets caught in the shockwave. So yeah, don't be too vulnerable to people who don't wanna hear it but don't be afraid to let stuff out BEFORE you explode.

At my school, we have a club called "Friends of Rachel" which is based off of Rachel's Challenge where we promote compassion and it was actually started by Rachel Joy Scott who the movie is about! That's so cool! I'm looking forward to watching it! : )

Um, I'm the new kid, and no one talks to me, so I end up being vulnerable. I sit at the back and i see a nice girl, crush, and try to talk to her. We get close and become a thing. Youth group does not split up, but lots of gossip about the relationship, which makes me more uncomfortable.

Oh my gosh, I'm currently in a youth group, and one teacher is SO COMPETITIVE she ruins it for everyone. She's super nice and everyone considers her their second mom, but still. One time we were playing a game sorta like football, and she actually got mad at me and 2 others girls for not participating lol. If you're on her team, you better win, or she will actually murder you lol. One time we were all on 4 different teams and all of the teams had to play different mini-games to determine how many points you got. My team got the baby food eating challenge. For every FULL JAR of baby food you ate, that was one point for your team. I complained about that for WEEKS. She said "You didn't have to eat it! If I was in your team I would have ate 7 jars of baby food just to get 7 points" THAT'S HOW COMPETITIVE SHE IS. But still, she's like a mom to me lol
