The United States Federal Government doesn't have an "official language," but the defacto official language is English. English is the official language in many US states.

@omayaki5264
@omayaki5264 5 лет назад
@Polish Hero Witold Pilecki Well the Germans did have empires that existed for quite a long Time and shaped the continent of Europe. You seem to be quite anti german inyour historical "objektive" point of view. The Austrian Empire was amongst the strongest of Europe for a Long Time. The German Empire was the strongest Continental Power for about 40 years. And Frederick the great wasn't a loser, He stood His ground for as long as possible against enemies that outnumbered him.

One of the greatest examples of blind chance and personalities of individuals deciding the course of history. It always makes me think about how would a different outcome affect the fate of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth? Alternatively, what if similar last minute "miracle" occurred say in 1791/2 with Catherine the Great suddenly dying?
@Vitalis94
@Vitalis94 5 лет назад
@@Artur_M. For starters, without a strong Prussian state, Russians would've continued their influence over the Commonwealth, and there would be just no incentive to partition it. Would Austria be interested in such a deal? But then again, many things would've happened in the meantime, so it's basically impossible to predict the outcome. Butterflies would surely be gigantic in PLC's case.

Polish Hero Witold Pilecki ehhh... I think we are all the result of our previous experiences, and being forced to watch his father murder his lover would leave permanent wounds. He learned that compassion and love were weaknesses, and the only thing that matters is power and victory. Fredrick II wasn’t a tactical genius... he was a musician and composer forced to live a life which wasn’t authentic to his true self. I still feel sympathy for him... even if he kind of started the 7 years war by contesting Maria Theresa’s right to the Austrian throne... a truly unforced error which created more problems for him than if he had just stuck to his own territory.

It's nice to see that the Seven Years War receive the attention it deserves. This war, as you mentioned, left a deep impact on the world. Two of the many reverberations of the Seven Years War was France's and Spain's shared dislike for the British. During the American Revolution, both Spain and France joined in and sent troops to fight against the British. Of course, in so doing, this meant that they spent much of their national treasury waging these battles. This led to civil uprisings in France and abroad for the Spanish colonies due to heavy taxation. We know those uprisings as the French Revolution and the Latin American Wars of Independence.

@@usarkarzts4207 I am well aware of that fact. Spain's dislike for the English goes all the way back to the Elizabethian Era. However, you're missing the point. After the British victory at Quebec in september 1759 (thanks to a terrible mistake by general Montcalm), the French didn't gave up. The French troops and Canadian militia gattered and fought back the following april in the bloody battle of Sainte Foy and confined the British inside the walls of Quebec. Afterward, the French needed resupply from their navy. They waited for them for months. A fleet had departed from France on route to Canada. It was partly seized by the British in the Azores. The rest of the fleet managed to reach the Gulf of St. Lawrence and was joined by Acadians and Micmacs. But the British were tracking them. It led to the battle of the Restigouche River in june and july 1760. British victory. The French ships would never make it to Quebec. It was over.

@@hackalley3224 Actually, he was slain when under house arrest at Ropsha Palace. Alexei Orlov, brother of Gregory Orlov lover and core agitator in the coup that removed Peter from power is more than likely the culprit. Paul I held the Orlovs responsible for his father's murder, forcing Alexei in his old age to carry Peter's coffin in 1796, Alexei then hurriedly fled Russia until Paul's own assassination - in similar fashion - in 1801. Gregory Orlov claimed he was being terrified and harassed by a ghastly apparition of Peter shortly before his death, too. (similar things also happened to the assassins of Paul I). Peter's personal physician, an Englishmen, spent his life fearing Catherine was sending men to kill him. Furthermore, despite being the Emperor, Peter was buried unceremoniously in a little church, with a high scarf under the chin to disguise the finger marks of strangulation, although, admittedly that is flimsy evidence as the fashion was to cover the neck with high scarves. It was announced that the deposed emperor had died suddenly of gout and colic. Which is more than a little suspicious. It is generally accepted that the Orlovs killed Peter, some believing it was spar of the moment during a scuffle, others that they did so to prove loyalty to their new sovereign/lover, and that Catherine took no part in it but also took no action, proclaiming her conscious clear, treating her widowhood as a convenience. She would then spend her reign trying to erase all memory of him, to such an extent that the younger courtesans had not heard of Peter III at all, when Paul I ordered his father be reburied with the proper honours, in the same coffin as the Empress Catherine. Furthermore, the biographical details of Peter III are undeniably polemic, casting him as an inhuman cartoon: "Could only speak a little French", "teased the priests and interrupted the funeral procession of his detested aunt, Empress Elisabeth....", "Forced all the pretty ladies at court to spend a night with his favourite officer, whilst he stood guard at the door holding a sword all night..." "Was hideous to look at." "Obsessed with playing his violin, badly, whilst walking fast through the palaces....", "...staggered drunk most days....", "ran in a panic, in all directions, then coward below deck, teeth chattering with sweat upon his brow, when informed of the coup....showed no courage, et cetera." The character assassination is so thorough as to be contradictory to external knowledge of the man and lurid to the point of gallows humour.

She was, but so was he. He was born in Kiel as Karl Peter Ulrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf but happened to be a grandson of Tsar Peter the Great from his mother's side. In fact, Catherine did a much better job at "becoming Russian" (learning the language and culture and acting as if they were her own) than he ever did.

Subtle critique of GoT S8: "Having successfully game-of-throned her husband, the newly widowed empress withdrew her armies from Central Europe... probably because the plot twists were becoming too unbelievable". Well, not that subtle but made me chuckle. Thanks for the great video Ser Armchair Historian and team.

Fun fact: unlike Frederick, the Russians were never decisively defeated and logistics seemed to be their only limitation. After this war the Prussians was significantly weakened and performed poorly during the Bavarian wars of succession despite being led by Frederick and Prussians suffered many humiliating defeats during the napoelonic and revulotinary wars.

Great video 👍,but I think your map is wrong in depicting as "Great Britain" the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. It would only become the UK of GB and Ireland in 1801. Before that the British monarch was also King of Ireland but Ireland was never part of GB.

9:50 Leading a certain man named Adolph HItler to celebrate wildly after hearing about a similar death of US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in a similar situation in united Germany in the mid 1940s. It didn't work out quite the same, however, as the war continued on and Frederick the Great's legacy was annihilated as Germany was torn in two for half a century and placed under foreign rule and supervision, with Prussia in particular under the Russians. Thanks Uncle Adolph.

Ironically, a certain Austrian corporal who later became chancellor of a united Germany, along with many of his Army officers, also drew much inspiration from Frederick the Great. The Prussian fixation on decisive victories like Leuthen would shape their strategy in the Franco-Prussian and two world wars. Another example of how the legend of Frederick the Great influenced German leaders is that when Franklin Roosevelt died in February 1945, Hitler supposedly claimed another miracle like the events following the death of Empress Elizabeth was sure to save his regime from total defeat. He was wrong.

Some friendly criticism: The little historical side-note word balloons need to stay on the screen longer. When they are only a few seconds long, they distract from the video as you attempt to focus on your only chance to read each one, otherwise you have to pause and go back repeatedly. Good job on the videos, otherwise.
