These are awesome videos, please keep them up. I love seeing the process of deduction for each individual and how they got to their conclusions. It's cool when they get it wrong too, like Michael here, and he talks through his learning process for next time. Really awesome stuff!

Videos are great! I hope you keep making them. It is extremely interesting to watch professionals. Also very helpful for those taking wine classes, since your guests really speak out their thinking and thoughts. Thank you! Wish you a lot more subs and views!

Based on his linkedin, he has not taken any courses or awards from WSET or CMS. His instinct is incredible. This tasting is awesome as he have the unique tasting formula.

I don’t think he did that well. the tannins, acid and distinct florality fixes you to Italy immediately. there is no other option. he failed to identify the tannins and florality correctly which were the top cues. this is a very typical barbaresco from a mainstream producer.

Nice guess... we love Produttori del Barbaresco, perhaps the world's greatest cooperative winery!

I was convinced this was a Brunello until he mentioned smoke, then immediately settled on something Nebbiolo based. 2010 Barolo was in my head. Fascinating to watch these - blind tastings are both frustratingly difficult and pleasantly insightful.

How can you say it's "medium intensity" just by looking??
@ianking832
@ianking832 4 года назад
I think he was referring to the color intensity (i.e. pale, medium, deep)

My guess: Pinot Noir, France, Southern, vintage of 2014....yikes not very correct! Italy, Nebbiolo 2013...the alcohol content pretty good. I didn't taste it after all!

I know that blind tasting is difficult, but damn, mistaken nebbiolo by sangiovese or even Bordeaux? Wtf
@Uckertay
@Uckertay 4 года назад
Bordeaux was just a name to deduct from the possible appellations as in "why wouldn't that be Bordeaux?" Barbaresco and Bordeaux wines are both age worthy wines that have similar qualities like tannin structure, alcohol, and because of necessary cooperage (especially in the case of Barbaresco), color is also a similar factor as well. 2013 was the vintage called for Chianti, but had it been Bordeaux, it would've made sense since the harvest that year was particularly difficult for most winemakers; cold, rainy, selective picking of grapes, and more acidic than usual just like in 2014.

So far in every video I watched on this channel, the sommelier got it wrong

I'm sorry to say this but he should really exit with his head down and go into tasting wines more seriously before thinking he can evaluate them on a stage like that. That was cringy to say the least. I hope he learned from his experience, everyone can make mistakes, but that was not the kind of mistake someone who knows wine at least a bit can make. That was embarassing, again I'm really sorry to have to say this.

Blind tasting is really hard and even the best will occasionally mistake Cabernet and Shiraz. Nebbiolo vs Chianti is imo quite understandable especially considering it was a Barbaresco and not a Barolo. If you knew anything about blind tasting yourself you would be a lot less critical of him. People like you are also a big reason that experts are afraid to do blind tastings on record which is bad for the wine industry as a whole imo.

@@itsmederek1 Blind tasting is indeed very difficult and even the best Sommeliers in the world can make mistakes. As far as I am concerned though, mistaking grape varieties is becoming extremely rare. The pepper profile of the Syrah/Shiraz is very hard to miss for me. I couldn't agree more though that Nebbiolo made in Barolo or in Barbaresco can be very hard to distinguish. They both have this very tannic signature profile from the Nebbiolo. To me on the other hand I feel like Sangiovese from Montalcino or Chianti are extremely easy to point out, just as easy in fact as a Syrah from Burgundy or a Shiraz from Australia even though they technically come from the exact same origin; or Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire or from New Zealand, I mean sometimes it's the region, sometimes it's the grape variety, you definitely need to have extensive experience and knowledge to be able to recognize a wine, its grape variety, its region+sub-region, its vintage and its price all while not knowing what it is except its color. Wine is very complex and even after many decades of tasting I still had a hard time last month figuring out a Pinot Noir from California (Russian River Valley). It's just like playing piano, you can be very good, but you will never cease to get better if you invest yourself truly.

@@cha1nreact1on I love how this guy describes his first impression about this wine and the "earthy" part. It looks like he tries to convey his own experience to others people and not copy the exact tasting formula of WSET or CMS. Maybe that is why he fails this blind tasting :D
