This Wilton Cadet vise was heavily rusted but well worth the energy spent restoring it. One of my favorite restoration techniques for cast is to clean the rust with a wire wheel and finish it off with Rust Converter and a bit of oil.

Just so you know you used that mill completely wrong. You shouldve used a mill spec ball end mill with 4th degree radius chamfer and at 15 in per min not 16 inches per minute. Geez, even then porter at a machine shop knows that. Oh, and you should've made the inserts for the jaws out of solid tungsten and painted the vice blue instead of black. It's just not a good practice to be racist against a vice like that. Better luck next time.

This my kind of restoration. You did a great job. I like to halt deterioration, restore to perfect working order and display the item's age in it's patina. If I could offer one bit of advice: Use raw linseed oil instead of Lubriplate. It is a very slow drying oil which will protect yet not collect dust and crap like a wet oil will. Just wipe on with an oil dampened cloth you keep in a sealed mason jar. Wipe it back off with a clean dry cloth otherwise the oil will semi dry thick and tacky. I use this on all my exposed metal and wooden tools.

Very nice. Learned a couple of techniques to try on my next vice salvage. I use an e-tank or a bucket of lye to remove rust; same process for old cast iron pans. My only critique... not sure I would have went with acorn nuts on the swivel nut handles. It would have been easy to heat the ends of the new handles then swage them into a very original looking mushroom. Thanks for sharing! I love bringing old vices back to life. DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT!!!! I have been going nuts trying to remember what model my dad had in his workshop!!! (I’m in my 50’s now, he had it before I was born, he was a mechanic) and I SWORE it was a bullet model. It wasn’t!!! It was exactly this one, the cadet! I tried like crazy searching it out through family to locate it so I can restore it. Unfortunately it was probably tossed for garbage at some point by someone without love for old tools. Beautiful job 👍

I have a 4.5" Wilton combination bullet vise circa 1970 that I am currently restoring to functional use. It did not come with the swivel locks, if I remove the nuts and make swivel locks for it I really liked the use of acorn nuts on the locks. Also, one of the pipe jaws is missing which I think I can make one on my mill. Excellent video, thanks for posting.

The vice turned out fantastic and works like new. Good job!!! My only complaint is this.....don’t entitle your video as “beyond repair” when you in fact DID repair it and it works just fine now. Better to have said “in need of repair”. That is more accurate and honest, don’t you think.

I get a kick out of all these "rusted" tools. Can't even find old metal things in Newfoundland, they've long disintegrated. Can't keep a car on this island longer than 10 years before its a rust bucket. That amount of rust would accumulate in a couple of weeks outside where I'm from. Sadly. Would take that vice and run it as is. Love the restoration videos all the same :)

alittle advice.. use a drill with that wire wheel why you say well your compressor is always running unless you have 120 gallon one ... so save it for small jobs... and dont bother beating out or grinding the hammer marks that gives it character.... also primer and paint it with expoxy paint.. it stands up the most..

For being a working tool, that amount of rust isn't any big deal. Wire brush it off, oil and grease the moving parts, and it would be good to go back into service. It's not a show piece, it's a tool.

You can tell when it is fake and when it is not fake. If you have severe pitting, then you know it has been out in the elements for years. it also depends on the type of steel. But yes, some of those sword restorations look staged since the design of the knives and swords look fairly new. Yet, he still has some that I am pretty sure not staged.

I always thought rust converter was meant to be used before you have removed all the rust. It is not meant to be used as a coating, like you have done here. Read the directions. And why put lubricant all over the body? What about car wax, or even spray acrylic. On the last shot, it looks like the jaws you put on don't meet up flush. Am I seeing that right?
