That's not the first time that Port Ohope has been tornadoed. Just on sunset, Easter Friday 1973, a water spout came ashore, turned into a tornado and scored a direct hit on my parents' house - Port Ohope was not densely housed in those days and no other homes were involved. The house was full of people who were in town for my sister's wedding the next day and when we saw the wind coming we fled downstairs into the basement. After the crashing stopped and the basement garage roller door, which had blown out of its runners, stopped flapping like a handkerchief on a clothesline, we went back up to find three of the four double ranchsliders either damaged or destroyed, all the kitchen windows blown wide open - but none broken - and an internal door ripped off its hinges. My parents arrived home shortly afterwards and didn't they get a surprise? The miracle was my sister's wedding dress laid out on the coffee table and covered with broken glass and not a single mark on it. So we cleaned up, sealed up the broken ranch slider holes with sheets of particle board, closed the curtains and got on with the party. Next day - wedding day - was clear and fine. PS That day, or the next - I can't remember - Taranaki got an even bigger tornado.
Ik they are but this was the firs5 ever 'tornado' to hit this region...I lived across te street from where that first video was taken.. every one was shocked
