My understanding was that Snape became a Death Eater as a way of being accepted. The bullying and whatnot at the hands of the Marauders pushed him towards the dark arts and he found an altitude for it. Thus gaining the recognition and respect of the dark lord and his posse. I would be interested in hearing what he actually did as a DE. As soon as Lilly's life was in danger he flipped at the drop of a dime. I definitely believe he was or would be on par with the trio given the opportunity. Def on the short list of my fav characters in cinematic history.

Yeah same I think he wanted to be accepted. And there is a certain similarity between the death eaters and the neo nazis in the real world so one of the motives of becoming a part of those groups is to be accepted and having a common goal. So it makes sense.

"All beyond their 70s"? No. Tom Marvolo Riddle 'Lord Voldemort' was born in 1926 on December 31st. He killed James and Lily Potter on October 31st 1981 still 54 at that time... He died May 2nd 1998 at the age of 71. He also spent 13 of those years as "a dark shadow that posessed small creatures" Gellert Grindelwald was born in 1883. (no specific date given) The great duel between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald took place in 1945. (Also no specific date currently given) He was 62 at the time. Yes, he lived on in Nurmengard Austria until 1998 when he was 115, but was not actively trying to take over the world at the time. Snape was barely 20 when he was a deatheater and heard the prophecy. @amptaxman
@amptaxman 2 года назад
I think Snape COULD have become as powerful as Voldemort. He had control of his magic very young, just as Voldemort had, and later in life, he had both Voldemort and Dumbledore as examples of what he could achieve. He was one of only two wizards that could fly without a broom or other means, the other being Voldemort, and he would have learned all he could from Dumbledore as well. Also, he was a potions master, which wasn’t something that Voldemort or Dumbledore were ever shown or described to be. The only difference was that Snape was younger, and he tried to stay under the radar by not demonstrating his skill to it’s full effect. He had to rely on tact, strategy and subterfuge to achieve his most important objective: Killing Voldemort. I think that if he had left the UK, and found a place, somewhere in a far off land, and taken the time to perfect his dueling stratagems, potion craft, and increased his power through the same methods that Voldemort and Dumbledore had used, given enough time, he would at least rival them in power and technique. But that wasn’t his goal. He wanted to end Voldemort’s reign of terror, so he put his own needs second. I imagine that if he had lived, he would have been able to relax his disdain for Harry Potter, and mellow out a bit. Maybe he would have even found some happiness and closure knowing that Lily would have been grateful for his protection of her son. Who knows. To me he seems like a fairly even mix between Voldemort and Dumbledore.

Snape was definitely one of the most powerful wizards in terms of pure skill and technique, voldermort and dumbledore definitely surpassed him in raw power and talent, but Snape being an individual that fooled voldermort into believing he was an ally, when voldermort was known to be able to see through people and know what’s in their minds and also being able to lessen dumbledores pain, as well as slow the spread of the poison dumbledore that not even he could do anything about, showcases snapes mastery of wizarding technique, and superior skill level in certain areas of magic, The movie does well to represent Snaped dueling ability , specifically defence when he dueled briefly with professor mcgonagall, where he remained strictly defensive, projected two of her attacks onto both death eaters standing behind him with precision without even looking at them, and using broomless flight to manoeuvre with angles too difficult for Mcgonagall to aim onto with her spells, sectum sempera also proved to be a nasty offensive spell in which Snape created, and seemed to have a way to reverse the effects of, when he helped Draco Malcoy recover the blood he lost back into his wounds before sealing them. Snape impresses me most as a wizard, as he was a loner and didn’t strike anybody as a special individual, yet through hard work, study, and relentless practice, reached heights that no other wizard achieved.

Voldemort rarely if EVER did something that someone else asked him to without a price. Voldemort stood to gain nothing from granting that request other than rewarding Snape's loyalty, and keeping him happy in his ranks. I read your title thinking in terms of the book/movie timeline, not alternate events. The way I understood Dumbledore’s plan, being that Dumbledore also misunderstood wandlore, was that by having Snape kill him, Snape would become master of the Elder Wand. Once all the Horcruxes, including Harry were gone, Snape would have a better chance than anyone to kill Voldemort. Snape’s death was unforeseen by Dumbledore (and Snape for that matter). I think Dumbledore was as surprised as Harry to be in King’s Cross Station, and it was only then that he realized the path of the Elder Wand’s allegiance.

In raw offensive power Voldemort is the strongest wizard in Harry Potter save for Merlin. Dumbledore is the greatest and strongest in DEFENCE. At first glance i thought Dumbledore was stronger but the more i read the books i realised that was definetly not objectively true. I perceive their duel as akin to Anakin vs Obi-Wan,Anakin is stronger and younger but he cant get past Obi-Wans defences Voldemort is canonically superior to Elder Wand wielding Gellert Grindelwald who was stated equal to Dumbledore in power but a shade less skilled. Voldemort fought on equal grounds with Dumbledore who: was wielding the Elder Wand(which while not unbeatable is definetly a significant advantage)had half a century more experience,had homefield advantage,was prepared to fight while Voldemort was taken of guard by his arrival,Voldemort spammed and relied on basically one spell. Voldemort was also so powerful without the ability to understand half the spectrum of magic(non dark),knowledge and understanding does play a role in power btw "Ofcourse he was propably the most brilliant student Hogwarts had seen"-Dumbledore about Tom Riddle "Voldemort had powers i will never have" Minerva saya its because of his morals but Albus doesnt necessarily seem to agree and its a point in the series that he isnt as pure good as he seems at first "I knew even my most powerful and complex protective magic would most likely prove to not be invisible if Voldemort were to return at full power"-Dumbledore right after fighting Voldemort "I wish i could frighten you and make you pay for your crimes but the time i could do that has long passed"-Dumbledore to Tom Riddle when the latter asked for DATA position Voldemort is treated as the big final boss throughout the series that people choose to believe in a prochecy in order for him to be defeated As for the perspective of fans,its simple,Dumbledore is the popular one while Voldemort tends to be shitted so by nature the former will be overrated and the latter will be underrated I know this isnt a popular perspective of things but it makes the story better as the villian would be more threatening.There is a good reason villians tend to have more power,its the superior choice for stakes from a writing perspective

Love your comment. The only thing I disagree with, although you did address it somewhat, is that the Elder wand will only be unbeatable ONLY IF the user is more powerful than the opposing wizard. So if I'm understanding the properties of the wand correctly, that would prove that they are either equal in power, or Dumbledore knew that only one person could defeat Voldemort, which is Harry solely because Voldemort made it so that night in Godrics Hollow. So for that reason alone I believe is why Dumbledore never tried to kill Voldemort himself.

I'm not sure how much harm Snape was able to do during the First Wizarding War. We know he was spying Dumbledore for Voldy. We don't seem to know much more. I go back to Snape whinging about his soul when he's asked to kill Dumbledore, like it would place his soul in peril. Had Snape done a lot of evil for Voldy that wouldn't make sense unless he repented. Yet I accept your point that he didn't change a lot other than regretting his involvement in Lily's demise. So if he didn't change a lot, he couldn't have too much he'd done to imperil his soul prior to killing Dumbledore. Either he did the work to repent and heal his split soul or his soul was never torn. Clearly, he's repented (or tried to) over his role in Lily's death. My view is that he mighta been too young when Lily/James died to have done too much evil since he wouldn't have been high ranking and trusted till after he revealed the prophecy. On the question of whether Snape committed any crimes while in Voldemort’s service, we can examine from his time as Potions Master, after his “redemption,” that he thoroughly enjoyed humiliating and getting as close to torturing students as he possibly could; Taking points from Gryffindors for minor infractions, sneering at Hermione’s hexed buck teeth, his perpetual taunting of Neville and so on. Likely stemming from his abusive childhood, and bullying at the hands of James, Severus was addicted to power and it’s abuses as it gave him some measure of comfort and revenge to no longer feel weak or powerless. So if he had the means, motive and opportunity to either match or surpass the most horrific crimes of the Death Eaters in the first war, why should anyone doubt that? But more than that; If he had not just the protection of the Dark Lord, but the ability to gain his earned trust, why would he ever refrain from it? Snape was an immensely complicated character but the darkness within him animated much of his actions throughout his life.

Snape was cruel to Neville because if Voldemort had chosen to go after Neville rather than Harry, Lily would still be alive. Snape was only 38 at the time of his death. As for the prophecy concerning Harry, Voldemort found out about it through Snape, who overheard part of the prophecy being made by Sybill Trelawney. Snape only heard a portion before he was caught and thrown out, but he reported what he had heard to Voldemort. The prophecy could have referred to either Harry or Neville, as both were born at the end of July and both sets of parents had escaped Voldemort three times. However, Voldemort randomly chose to believe that Harry was the one meant by the prophecy and targeted him, thus unknowingly setting the prophecy in motion by "marking him as his equal." 😢

Snape would have become the most powerful wizard of all time imo. He excelled and expanded every field he entered. he had a vast knowledge that when combined, like dumbledore, become exponentially more powerful than any particular mastery. there are points where Dumbledore needs Snapes help, because he does not know of the dark magic as Snape does. he has been to the darkest places and returned a whole soul. He was a fortress of knowledge.

I actually questioned if Voldemort learned some from Snape. If you remember they mention that when Snape started school he knew more curses and dark magic than most (I think it was 3rd years?) combined and that was when he was STARTING school at Hogwarts. So he had this knowledge prior to even starting Hogwarts. It is hinted at that Voldemort had quite a bit of respect for Snape. He tried to spare Lily based on Snapes request alone this was with her being a mudblood. Among other things

I think if Snape met Lilly in a confrontation. If it was just him and another deatheater. Snape would have probably killed the deatheater to protect her. Then tell Voldemort that the other deatheater was killed by someone from the order of the Phoenix. And sooner or later Snape would have had to choose to ether protect Lilly or stay a deatheater.

What i don't understand is right before the battle of Hogwarts. Why Snape went back to Voldemort. Snape could have fought off McGonagall and gained control of the situation. Then taken her and Potter to the pensieve to show them what happened and why. Or even could have done that with McGonagall sometime before that. That way McGonagall could have gotten Harry and took him to see Snapes memories too. Snape would have been very beneficial to Harry and everyone on that side. Plus I would have liked to see Snape in a good dual.

No Snape would not have become more powerful than Voldemort. Magical power is not even a thing in HP, magical knowledge is. The reason Voldemort and Dumbledore became great wizards is because they were interested in studying and experimenting with magic. There is very little canonical evidence Snape was interested in that sort of thing.

Still, I do not think that either Voldemort, Dumbledore, or Grindelwald, would match up to the Ancient Wizards that used wandless magic. The generations that got accustomed to wands became too laid-back, instead of trying to understand how magic truly works as a form of energy, instead they would know X words give X spell, after you practiced it a lot. Ancient Wizards had poweful magic that could reflect killing spells, put a protection in exchange for a selfless sacrifice, evil ones such as Herpo were the original creators of the Horcrux, and also of powerful creatures such as the basilisk, who could kill you with their glance only. The Patronus spell is also likely ancient.

Lord Voldemort could solo the entire Potter verse effortlessly except Albus Dumbledore.Severus Snape surpassed the Dark Lord in some areas such as occlumency and potions, however this is also true for other characters.For example, Filius Flitwick is better at charms than Dumbledore and a dueling champion, however Dumbledore would still stomp him.Anything Snape can do Voldemort can do better, faster, and with fewer witnesses.

I don't think Snape would have had the authority to keep the Deatheaters under control after Voldemorts downfall. He was respected, but only one among several members of the leading elite. People like Bellatrix, Malfoy or Barty Crouch Jr. would never have taken orders from him. Especially Bellatrix, considering how fanatic she was. Having a good strategy is one thing, but you have to have authority and a strong position as a leader for it to matter.

I think Severus, was indeed to ever come close, to these 3 monsters (in terms of power not personality). No one was match for him in combat, in the Deathly Hallows book, unlike the movie, Minerva was struggling to fight him, and even when it was 4 (Minerva, Horace, Flitwick and Sprout) against him, it wasn't enough. They did their best, and he didn't even break a sweat, fighting them but in secret keeping them safe. He flew away because he wanted to show loyalty to Voldemort, playing like he is until the last moment. But what I wanted in the book, is that he will fight Voldemort and Nagini. I mean, if I was a warrior like him, and I knew for sure that I'm going to die, I would give all out for one last ride. Even if he would Avada Kedavra Voldemort, it would be just a temporarily delay, as Voldemort still had active Horcruxes. The moment he was unreadable for Voldemort, Voldemort should have used his intelligence, to realize something is wrong, long before the battle of hogwarts.
@K3Ollie
@K3Ollie 2 года назад
Snape couldn't fight back against Voldemort because it would have tipped him off that Snape was truly part of the Order and working for Dumbledore. They needed Voldemort to believe that he was winning and everything was going according to his plan to give Harry the best chance at defeating him. Snape wasn't unreadable to Voldemort. He just hid some things. He would have had to let Voldemort read him a little otherwise it would have made him suspicious that he was hiding something.

Kind of true. Although here's the thing, Voldemort was an exceptional student but what puts him above everyone else was his thirst for power, his obsession with being special, above everyone. He wanted to be The God. Snape, from the beginning wanted a regular life. He had emotions, feelings, and he'd have been happy if he had a normal life. Abused at home, mocked at school, dark arts were a way to defend himself. His love for lily remained his grace. It was strong enough to save him from any follies Voldemort committed. Now, whether it's Hermione, snape, Dumbledore, Grindelwald, tom riddle... They're all brilliant but you need to crave power if you want to be powerful. Snape didn't want power at the end. He wanted a happy life. So, I guess the answer lies somewhere in between. Or maybe no. Not because of capabilities but because he didn't have the intention.
@Goldengirl48
