The roots can be as small as hair and easily fit in the joints of your main drain. When they come in contact with water and waste in your drain, they quickly grow, clogging your drain. Tree roots can also break and damage drain pipes, costing you thousands in repairs.
A routine every homeowner should have is adding a root killer once or twice a year to the main drain. Or 4 times a year if you know there are tree root problems on your property. Tree roots grow the most in the spring and fall, so that is the best time to apply a root killer.
Make sure to wear gloves. Pour a quarter bottle into the lowest level toilet near the main drain. Flush immediately. Keep flushing until the blue crystals can no longer be seen.

Toilets in California are low flow. We flush with 1/4 of that much water. It will take 4 flushes to get that much material to go down. 😂

I guess all brands are different as far as instructions to use. I use one named “Root Destroyer “ that looks similar to the one used here. Same shaped 2lb container. Per directions it says to put 1/2lb and flush. So that would be 4 times using the whole 2lb container. After the last one you flush either once or twice. The object is to get it all in your line without diluting it too much. When it’s all in the line leave it and let it sit at least overnight. The longer the better. So do it if you’re leaving for a wknd or so. If you can’t do that put it in right before going to bed. You want it to cling to the roots. Another thing to consider is how long your pipe is to either your septic tank or to the city’s main sewer system line. If it’s a long way maybe flush a little more and if it’s not far maybe less. If you live around lots of trees definitely do it a couple of times a year especially if it’s dry. When it’s dry those tree’s will send those roots like crazy looking for anything wet. Like moisture coming from a cracked tera-cotta pipe crack or joint. When it’s dry it’s worse than when the ground is nice and moist. I’m not an expert I’ve just had issues in the past and after doing this at my house the past few years I’ve had no more problems.

Sometimes slow drains could be air vent on top of house is stop up, take hose pipe run it down the vent tube on water see if water drains if not vent stop up. Bump the hose pipe if you feel a blockage that how I did work great.

Rent a cable rodder. Clean out the sewer pipe. Maintain roots with copper sulfate regime 2-3 times each year. IF problem reoccurs, rent a pipe camera, assess blockage, pipe integrity and in some cases more may be required. Old pipes in the earth sometimes need to be replaced or relined.

You should let it dissolve completely before flushing that way you get a good distribution and even concentration . Also keep in mind when doing this it will weaken or kill the trees around your septic system so if they are very tall or close to your house they could fall on your house due to weakened roots.

Copper Sulfate absorbed in the minimal feeder roots that could make it into your homes sewer pipe will not down your trees by the house. Trees are miraculous and nature aint this dumb. Copper sulfate will end those fibrous roots in your pipe and enter up into the root a bit,….that’s the point. Rest assured your tree has already located ample water sources to survive without your pipes few roots. HA!! Your weakened/ dead trees will not crush you in your home! HA!!

If you already have roots plugging your sewer line and you kill them, you will end up with dead roots plugging your sewer line which means your sewer line will remain plugged until the roots are removed. The stuff you are using only works if you use it consistently before the roots grow into the sewer line.

Roots die. Roots become brittle. As you continue flushes pieces of roots flush away. That’s a fact.
@oldtimefarmboy617
@oldtimefarmboy617 3 года назад
@@chappiestclair1821 As you continue to flush all of the paper and solid waste continues to hang on the root and your sewage continues to back up into the building rather than flow to the sewer system/septic tank. Dead roots plugging your sewer line is just as bad as living roots plugging your sewer line and until you remove the root plug your sewer line is still plugged. If you put something powerful enough to dissolve the roots quickly enough to be useful you are using something powerful enough to damage the sewer line.

you both are correct ... I think it boils down to the extent of your root problem, if you only have feeder roots getting in thru the seems where old pipes are joined then you can probably get away with just using this alone but if you have a big ass maple tree getting in thru a cracked pipe from the heaving of the same maple then it's going to take a seriously long time to break roots down if the bigger ones even do, to begin with, then you may want to have sewer snaked with root cutting bits BEFORE you start maintaining with copper sulfate. in fact, you may at that point want to have a video inspection done to see the extent of damage cuz it may be cheaper in long run to have someone replace that piece of pipe ... its really situational, If you have a house full of people taking a crap once a day plus a shower for each person then you kinda need immediate results ...

It was the first floor toilet, I was coming up from the basement. but yes, one should always go for the lowest level, so the sewer main trap should be preferred.

If Flame Ming doesn't have a toilet in his basement, then using one on the next level is fine. I happen to have a toilet in my basement, so that is the one I use. I have been using a product like this for over 25 years, and has worked very well for me. I happen to use Zep Root Kill, and the ingredients are probably the same as the one in this video.

Curious - it says that it's corrosive to metal pipes, yet isn't the sewer pipe metal? Wouldn't that make more damage? Gonna try it anyway, but didn't know.

Use at the location closes to the sewer line, like a basement toilet. And make sure you flush so there is no residue crystals sitting in the toilet. Follow instructions on the package and you should be fine.

That is a mineral depost stain. Some water systems stain toilets. I used to do house cleaning and the only way to get that kind of stain off is to use a pumice stone, which can scratch the porcelain. The other way would be to replace the toilet often but that isn't logical. I appreciate the information he provided. .

Please do not tell anyone to use copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is banned in several areas due to issues with the sewer treatment plants going above their copper effluent limits. That and copper sulfate is harmful to the pipes and the environment.
