What a great sleeve, I adore various fancier sleeves and the bigger the better. :D The dress came out lovely. Great job :)

Thank you very much! And I totally agree - for sleeves the bigger and fancier the better (another reason to avoid modern sleeves, which are so basic and skimpy!) The 30s being the ultimate era for sleeves of course :)

I think the lack of "floof' on the skirt is perfect the sleeves are so statement and look wonderful. Another fabulous make. xx

Thank you very much! I see what you mean - the sleeves are enough of a statement in themselves. Perhaps a full skirt with the sleeves might have been a bit much (overtones of Lady Diana’s 80s wedding dress!!!) xx

Having less fabric in the skirt makes the dress more 'accessible' for daily wear if it had a fuller skirt I automatically think wedding guest or bridesmaid with floor length skirt. You look amazing, great job! ❤
@Samanthalovestosew

I know what you mean - a fuller skirt would have made it more ‘dressy’ and therefore less wearable. So perhaps my lack of fabric was a blessing in disguise! Thank you so much for watching and for encouraging me ❤️🥰

All the technical stuff was lost on me, no surprise there, but yet again I was so impressed by the finished result. It was lovely. I think one of the things I have learnt about vintage sewing is how practical you have to be, piecing together the skirt for example. I imagine this happened a lot in the 30's and 40's. I think you are so skillful and talented, I for one do not believe in any of the jeopardy you may suggest as I have every confidence in you.
@Samanthalovestosew
@Samanthalovestosew 3 месяца назад
Thank you very much Ian - it’s good to hear you have confidence in me! I never know till I put something on whether it has worked out. I’m always scared it will look awful or not fit. This definitely happens to me if I sew the reproduction vintage patterns graded to modern sizes. I am vintage sized! I also think in the 30s and 40s women had to be practical and creative themselves - no fast fashion like today. It’s one of the things that draws me to the era.

Thank you very much Lizzie! The butterfly sleeves are such a simple idea but so pretty. Yes, no more cheap thread for me either. The awful thing is that this snapping thread was super expensive pure silk dressmaking thread. (The shop must have put out old stock … grrrr) 💕💕💕

This is a gorgeous dress, Samantha!! The fabric is beautiful and the butterfly sleeves are so impressive!! Yes, it looks perfect in the cottage garden. Thanks for sharing your vintage makes PS. I live in the states where we call them snaps but I much prefer the onomatopoeia “poppers”.
@Samanthalovestosew
@Samanthalovestosew 3 месяца назад
I’m so pleased you like it - I know you love 30s dresses! I truly thought the butterfly sleeves might be more tricky or not look like the illustration … but they worked first time without a struggle! I love onomatopoeia in words too. Also, as I’ve called them poppers all my life, I have to remember to call them snaps for Americans. I’m gradually learning American! Thank you so much for your encouragement 💗💐

I’m so pleased you like it - I think the pattern and fabric were meant to be together. You make a good point about a shirring foot with my old sewing machine accessories. For some months now (off and on!) I am working out what all those feet do. I’m hoping to make more use of them in future!

Gorgeous dress!! I love the butterfly sleeves and the belt buckle you chose is perfect. You look very petite in the videos, that is a good thing because you were able to make the dress with the amount of fabric you had. I am going to try making the sleeves on another bodice pattern.
@Samanthalovestosew
@Samanthalovestosew 3 месяца назад
I’m so pleased that you’re going to create the sleeves. There’s no reason they couldn’t be added to all sorts of bodice patterns (I thought I might do this myself!) Yes, vintage patterns are great for me fit-wise whereas modern grading swamps, especially at the shoulders. I’d never thought but you’re right - it is useful for being able to get a dress from a limited amount of fabric too! Thank you very much for your support 💐

Good lord, this pattern is not for the faint hearted 😲 What a challenge, even with your expert skills which you certainly needed with eeking out the fabric. I don't think the slimmer skirt detracts at all, do you? The bodice and sleeves are so epic 🦋 🦋 🦋 and Oh my 💘 that print!!! You've really done it justice 😊 Another giggle packed episode my ducky 🤭 get those secateurs out, that big shrub could be the death of you!!! 'Woman found mangled under a garden bush' Detectives puzzle over the discovery of a young woman partially buried under shrubbery in a sleepy west country village. She was found dressed in the style of a character from a Miss Marple murder mystery and foul play is suspected.

@@rowanhughes8682 Can you believe the massive jasmine that reached out to grab me with its tentacles was once one of those tiny M and S pot plants?! It was given to me as a gift and soon looked sickly and on its last legs. I planted it in the flowerbed expecting to see no more of it… but it loved life out there. Honestly I’m always going at it with the secateurs. It just encourages it more 😆 Of course I love the idea of looking like the heroine of a Miss Marple mystery. It’s the look I go for! Thank you for appreciating the fabric - it’s one of the best 30s ones I’ve seen 😃xx

Hi Samantha! I'm sorry to hear about your frustrating/disappointing silk thread. It's funny how sewing brings us so much joy, but at the same time (like with the thread and slippy slidey rayon) it can bring us so much frustration 🥴😊🤣. What an interesting construction for the front bodice. I'd love to study the line drawings and pattern pieces. As usual you have chosen the absolute perfect belt buckle. So pretty... 😍 The dress turned out so gorgeous. I don't even feel it misses the fuller skirt at all. I love it! 🩵💚💙🩷 Those sleeves are fantastic!
@Samanthalovestosew
@Samanthalovestosew 3 месяца назад
Hi Laura! Yes, sewing is like a soap opera of highs and lows and never being quite certain how the story will end! I decided I didn’t mind the skirt being only a third as full as it should have been either. It makes the dress look a bit more wartime as opposed to mid 30s but that’s not a problem. I’ll put the bodice pattern piece I traced onto my Ko fi page too if you’d like to see it. I’m away from home at the moment but I’ll get it up by the weekend. I’m so pleased you like the dress and the sleeves, and thank you very much for watching another sewing epic! 💗💐

I can’t think that it is normal with silk thread as otherwise how could anyone sew with it if it snaps as soon as you give it a tug?! I think it hung around in the shop too long because it was expensive and therefore began to disintegrate. Either that or the shop bought it on the cheap!
