That is funny that people say it looks like scrubs. Having lived in them for years, to me that is very strange . . . but I do get it as I bought my husband a blue vest and he kept getting asked if he worked at Walmart!! And that is a really cute, practical dress which is nicely done. Keep it up!
This dress came out super cute. It doesn't look like scrubs to me. I had a huge score last week of over 100 (YES! One hundred) vintage pattern with 75 in my size! Some are never opened, factory folded, some are mouse chewed on the edges. Yikes! Can't wait to get one started. They're all dresses or skirts with coordinating tops.
I like that you do the cost breakdown, but I also wish you'd go over some more economical options. For example, the original vintage pattern is the same as the repro pattern that's only about $15, way cheaper if you get it on sale. There's easy drafting methods for this kind of simple dress, and part of why home dressmaking was common in past decades. Labor cost for purchasing versus your own labor (essentially free), might be a better way to show the cost you spent vs cost could've spent with alternatives like thrifted fabric, sale notions or stash, etc. I love all your projects though, and I love the way you walk through pros and cons and what you might change
Hello! I appreciate this comment and wanted to make sure to address it thoughtfully. I totally hear you on the more economical options, for me thrifting fabric doesn't always work because of my sensory issues, many fabrics in thrift stores are materials that trigger them. I try to thrift when possible but I've found I am more likely to keep the clothes longer if I select the fabrics new/know what material they are which makes them a better investment for me. Also I am often sewing from stash but I still paid for the fabric at some point and keep track of the cost of everything in my stash! I'll think about ways to suggest alternative patterns, for me the joy of sewing comes from using the original vintage patterns, and because of my disability/limited space drafting things isn't a good option for me. The last thing is the labor, I call out how much labor it takes because I really want people to think critically about their own clothing and how much the person who made their clothes is making. Oftentimes clothing that you can buy in stores for $15 is made using slave labor so I am calling out how long it takes/how much it would cost to pay someone a living wage for the items in fast fashion shops. In the past it was more economical to home sew because garments cost much more than today and were much higher quality, now this has swapped and it'll almost always be cheaper to buy something from a shop than making it yourself! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I really do appreciate it ❤️
I made a wrap dress using Simplicity 8186, wore it to a doctor appointment, and got a lot of compliments from the staff BECAUSE they mistook it for scrubs (they could only see the top through the window at the front desk.) I've also worn actual scrubs and they are really freaking comfortable! Don't let that comment get you down. (Side note: 8186 is a good pattern that I want to make again; the finished garment is very similar to a 1930's house dress.) I think your neckline woes might be fixed if you adjust the shoulder ties to be just a teeny bit looser. Judging from the overall fit of the bodice, I think it's just hitting a little too high. But that is so incredibly minor and you made such a cute, functional dress! Plus, it's blue, so if that blueberry stains, it won't be noticeable!
I love that even the food in the pocket is blue 😂. Great piece! Seems like one of those things where you can cut out multiple at once and just add some changes here and there for a different look. And thanks for the seam gauge recommendation, I’ve been looking for one. I snapped up the last available one quick.
OMG i'm saving all my fabric scraps from dress making for a patchwork quilt also!! I've made a few quilts, so i know i can do it, but i just haven't started it yet... 😬
I need to jump in that wrap dress train one day🎉 they look so fun to make. & I love the bias tape trim, Wrights starting selling unique bias tape again which makes me “Sew Happy!” 😂
Hey! Thanks for sharing my channel, I don't quite know why my subscribers increase slowly but I am also okay with it, I am mainly here for a hobby and to hear from other people with similar passions as me so I still feel very rewarded in my work here!
I love this dress! I found both of your channels because of you going to the shop to buy this fabric so this was so lo dog to watch! As always I loved seeing all the steps and seeing how you sew! I'm currently cutting out a pattern my anxiety is finally letting me sew again so that will be on my channel soon yay thank you for always inspiring me to keep fighting xx
@@HaleyMarieVintage my anxiety is making it so hard it’s a simple layer dress I started weeks ago just want to get over this mental health block over it so I can learn xx
Major déja vu-have you used this pattern before? Have you used this fabric in another project? Why does this look like something I’ve already seen on you?!?! Guess that means it’s a quintessential Haley dress 🤣😂
about the sash hole - in the 50s, a woman would have been wearing a slip to prevent flashes of flesh. i keep thinking about making myself an old fashioned slilp or even a chemis just because of how they can help to make clothes fall more flattering (just speaking of my own personal wear). i don't know why slips fell out of fashion. i've subbed to drew, but haven't watched anythign yet.
I think it fell off of style because 99% of women don't wear dresses, now there's a comeback of boho dresses and we see women wearing but dresses in general aren't common
I actually wear slips often, I also think slips fell out of fashion because how we do laundry has changed, the main reason I wear slips is they are easier to wash than my vintage dresses and help me prolong the time between washes. Now with washing machines and most clothing being made to be washed I think a lot of people don't understand the purpose of slips!
''Scrubs'' ?? Rude! If you don't have anything nice to say, how about not saying a thing? Being quiet is way better than to tell someone than their cute dress looks like scrubs!
