Something my mother taught me with fabrics like these that just fray no matter what, is to slightly and very carefuly burn the ends of the fabric with a lighter, since it's just plastic it melts and gives it a very nice finish. Also the dress turned out beautiful! as someone who's not very experienced yet we sometimes notice every little detail that's not perfect, but fortunately most people don't 😂
@olgahein4384
@olgahein4384 11 месяцев назад
Yep, for sealing thin and flimy synthetic fabric a lighter is best. I remember making organza roses hairpins and even complete Kanzashi headpieces out of synthetic satin and organza with a candle and hot glue instead of rice glue and a bamboo board.

I do this for the ribbons on my pointe shoes because otherwise they fray into pieces. It works so well, but if it does burn it discolours the fabric.

Building on this idea- when you have a LOT of seams, you can use a soldering iron. I have done this to melt the edges, can be done before / after using scissors, but always try on a scrap of the fabric, in a well ventilated area! May also make the soldering iron unsuitable for anything other than fabric.

The dress looks beautiful at least :D When making a circle skirt, I would recommend letting it hang a day or two after cutting it out, since the diagonal tends to stretch with gravity a lot more than it does on the vertical and horizontal grain, so letting it stretch and then making sure it is still round could help with the skirt unevenness issue.

I make my “circle” skirts with 8 gored panels. It involves more sewing to put the panels together but in the long run, a much more stable skirt.
@AllThePeppermint

@@karynbray1004 This works well for most fabrics, but not ideal for sheer fabrics wherein the seams would stand out.

Ok, small piece of advice here: whenever you're cutting a circle skirt, hang it by the waist and let it rest for a day. Then, go back in and adjust the bias, which will have elongated during the night. Also, for delicate corsets, I advise using a sturdy foundation fabric to do all the strength, and the delicate bits should not be as tight. Hope this helps!

That dress looks stunning! And I agree on the fabric struggle. I swear that picking just the right fabric is usually harder than the actual project! It will take me months sometimes to find just the right fabric, and 50% of the time it will be problematic in the making of the garment anyway.

Such a beautiful dress, wow! Honestly one of my favourites yet! Have you ever considered making it a skirt and blouse, so detached pieces to wear seperately? I could imagine them looking great combined with a simpler/one colour top as well and possibly more practical to wear... evene more options with the sleeves as well

For synthetic fabrics I always melt the hems, since pressing won't do anything and those fabrics shift and do their own thing. By using fire you will melt the fibers and if done carefuly it's pretty much invisible. However that being said a point of warning: if you do this, practice first, get a feel for how close to the fire you can get and how long to hold it there before the fibers either catch fire or melt to fast creating holes and such (trust me, I've done both on finished garments because I was to lazy to practise). Also be safe when doing this, it is fire afterall, so stay safe and take safety precausions. All in all this is the best way I have found to get the most invisible and fail safe way to prevent fraying on slippery and hard to work with synthetics (like organza and chiffon).

Also, if the dress is coming apart at the zipper, you could hand sew a matching peice of trim at the edges. (Think thick braided trim like wedding dresses)

First, this is beautiful and I love it! You did great!! about some of your issues though: You can easily hem the bottom (and make it look nice) with some plastic horsehair braid (cheap and easy to find on most sewing supply sites). This is so easy for circle skirts and adds a bit of stiffness to the bottom hems as well which might not be needed here but oh well. Just sew it with a small seam allowance to the bottom hem and then flip it inside and topstitch it down. you can make it even crisper to help with your no ironing problem by sewing 2 lines of topstitching but that's not necessary. It's my fav hack for finishing dress bottoms that I cant do a rolling hem on. Another tip (for the future because I cant even tell so its totally fine here!) is to straighten up a hem like this one on a circle skirt where measuring is hard, pin it to your dress form and let it hang for a day before cutting the hem a specific distance from the floor. I like to use a paper towel roll or a rigid measuring tape if you have one but they do sell things for this if you want something made for this.

It's beautiful! What if you seal the edges with a flame (candle, lighter) to at least stop the cut edges from fraying? French seams may not look good on a sheer fabric if you can't press them or if the fabric is stiff. Same with hems. If you run the cut edges through a flame after cutting but before you sew the seams, they would have less bulk.

There is transparent elastic you can get and it works great in sleeve cuffs when you are working with sheer fabrics because you really cannot see it. It is a lovely way to hide things. It also can be used to gather sheer fabrics when you want as minimal handling on the fabric to prevent fraying. It is think so you can sew and overlock/serge through it. Using a lighter to seal the ends of this kind of fabric is really helpful as well. This turned out lovely and I think this is a fantastic colour on you.

Looks great even if its just an instagram dreas lol. Your uneven hem might be because you have to let circle skirts hang at least a day so the bias can stretch, the recut the hem. You can also take out the zipper and put in corset lacing if its too small! It would definitely add to the princess look as well.

If it frays that badly, you might want to do a rolled hem. Takes a lot of time to sew it by hand, but it will hopefully be worth it. (Unless those 3D roses decide otherwise and it becomes a pain in the posterior 🙈) Other option would be using a ribbon or, better, a bias tape at the hem, so it won't fray anymore. Would give the dress a completely different look though.

The gown looks stunning and I love the sleeve version. They bring more balance to the look. Circle skirts can be tricky. I would pin the ruffle to the skirt and let it hang for a day or two. Parts of circle are on bias and parts are on straight of grain. That's why the hem is uneven after some time. Bias parts stretch under the weight of the skirt itself and the ruffle. After it's stretched, you can even out the hem and sow on the ruffle.
