For some reason sewing historical(ish) foundation layers to me is like PEAK femininity, so for this project making a dreamy petticoat, I thought it’d be fun to talk about my journey as a non-binary person WHILE I’m crafting this pastel confection!! I’m really proud of the video production on this and I really hope you like watching!

Hey! I'm Lizard Leigh! I'm a designer who turns abstract concepts into obsessively constructed cosplays. This channel is where you'll find every weird DIY cosplay build, shared with you in a detailed breakdown or build log! And when I say that, I really mean.... flying by the seat of my pants to make it work and catch that cosplay vibe lmfao.
We're building the airplane as we fly it y'all, and having fun getting WEIRD with original cosplay.
If you're new to making cosplay costumes, you're in the right place for cosplay advice- I've had a lot of time to learn a ton of things to keep me inspired and motivated for over a decade in this scene. Let's hang out and turn our big build schemes into some blessed seams!

This was very refreshing to see as a genderfluid person myself. I'm very femme presenting (mainly because I'm curvy) so many people will just not care about my pronouns because I "don't look nonbinary" Big flooffy dresses are fun sometimes! I'm still genderfluid/nonbinary no matter what I'm wearing! ❤️🏳️‍⚧️

YES! I never thought of myself as non-binary, because I have long hair because..my well hair grows. I have no attachment to my femininity in any way. But having to talk a lot more in english has made me think a lot more about my gender identy, in a way I never had to, because I speak natively Finnish, that doesn't have gendered pronouns. It never has. For me gender is this elusive social construct that people arbitraly follow or don't. Now in english I identify as trans, because I don't identify as female (that I was assigned at birth) but also not male. I'm just me. Something, somewhere. A being.

You have now inspired my wedding colours. I'm Ace, hubby is straight as the sun sails. I do totes love him with all the love that isn't taken up by dragons and old books, but the thought of having a literal lavender wedding with some hidden Aces. My family would never know and my friends would smirk about EVERYTHING. Honestly, wasn't looking forward to planning this, the idea of wedding seem very unnecessary personally in but he takes being a Leo to heart so extravagant is the minimum. But adding some mischief is probably just what I needed. Thanks for the inspo, I will make sure a lavender bubble tea is toasted in your honor.

I think my favourite thing hearing about queer journeys is just… the tremendous level of confidence everyone seems to gain once they are able to experiment with their gender. It’s just such a joy to see! Other than that this video is so calming and aesthetically pleasing! Facing exams in the upcoming weeks and this has just been the best and calming start into the day. Thank you for your gentle talk about your gender journey! As someone almost twice your age, who just finally found all the new words and has realized I’ve been gender fluid my whole life it is uplifting to hear your joy in this video. And I’m never not gonna want to spin out a ruffle skirt from time to time. I still present fem and wear cottage core boho dresses all the time but I know it’s drag. And I hate wearing trousers. They are Physically difficult with my disabilities. And I don’t feel that how one presents has anything specific to say about one’s identity unless one wants it to.

Fun fact: A close friend of mine in their 50's realised a few years ago that they're non-binary through conversations they were having with me, at the time in my late 20's. It was the total reverse to how people expect profound and life-changing advice to go, which we're both very happy to have experienced as it reinforces our beliefs about age not limiting someone's value or insight in a conversation. Plus, they've told me how grateful they are for taking the time to have those conversations! I'm glad you're going down your own journey and finding ways to describe how you feel!

Oh my god I totally get it! I want to be a voice for the trans community but don’t want to like speak over them y’know? But I feel it is important to clarify that we are cis because as cis people, we have no idea what it’s like to struggle with gender and so we should never try to speak for them ❤

Oh, my gosh, the boxes thing, *yes*. Also the 'less syllables'. I'm ace and on the aro spectrum, so with that on top of, like, all the other things, it's way too many labels and calling myself queer just works easier.

A big thing for me figuring out my gender was the extreme need to cosplay Mollymauk(I was very fancy for Halloween) and other characters like Black beard from OFMD and a lot of other characters. Also skirts can be so fun, especially if you can spin around in them and they go poof.

I very much relate to what you're saying about the identity is a community idea. I am _technically_ a cis woman, but only because I just really don't mind that label. I feel this disconnect from femininity, but I also feel like she/her fits me in a way that no other pronouns do. I am ace and demiromantic and encephaloromantic and panromantic and quoiromantic and Jewish and autistic and all of those labels interact to form who I am as a person. I am not aroace in the same way someone else is because my quoiromanticism is messing everything up about wtf is romantic attraction anyway. I am not panromantic in the same way that someone else is because my autism blinds me to the external factors of someone's gender or sex. My Judaism throws everything out of whack as a queer woman. I pass as a white woman- similarly to how you do- but while I am a woman (to the best of my knowledge, at least) I am not white. I am of Middle Eastern descent, I am Jewish and a descendant of Jews who lost everything over and over. And I find my community anyway! I am so grateful to find the welcoming communities that I have and to have the accepting family that I do. And identities are a complex brocade of life experiences.

I want to thank you for the excellent sew along, it turned out magnificently. Heather from TV has had several instances where I don't agree with her views and it's brought me into conflict. I have been a long time customer of hers (bought my first TV pattern in 2003) but I've stepped away from her products since 2017. Unfortunately she does have some of my favourite patterns available and I see myself breaking down in the near future and getting two patterns that I haven't found alternative options for. I didn't hear about the Costume College kerfuffle, though. As a mom to a queer non binary kid, I recognize that you being open and on a public forum, I appreciate your experience and sharing them and normalizing being trans non binary. This stuff didn't really get talked about when I was growing up and some of my favourite comedians (Eddie Izard) were not open about their experiences until much more recently.

This came out so beautifully! Look at that floofy poofy, bouncy flouncy, lavender loveliness! I'm in awe of the skills you demonstrated with this petticoat, it's so dang impressive. With regards to gender journeying, I've been feeling similarly over the last few years. There was never a lightning bolt revelation for me, it's just been a gradual dawning over time. I still hesitate to fully claim my nonbinaryness, though. I'd like to, but at the moment I lack the confidence, and I'm afraid of possible negative reactions ^_^' I'll get there someday. Thank you for sharing your story and your marvelous creations with us all!

I’m coming to this video having first watched your much later videos for this project. Just I have to see that I love hearing about your journey and the exploration of your gender. I’m a cis woman who has always felt perfectly at home with my gender but my sexuality was a JOURNEY. It’s so crazy looking back on experiences that I told myself I enjoyed and then realizing later on in life that so much of that part of my life was like performance art because of what other people and society in general told me was “normal” for me. These days I mostly tell people I’m aroace because it’s easier but personally I identify as “demi but only in theory” or, when I’m feeling particularly snarky, “gaze not upon me with your peasant eyes”.

It’s always so interesting to hear transmasc lesbians talk about their gender and experiences as a transmasc gay man because it's similar to mine but so so different at the same time (though cosplay didn't factor into my gender awakening mine was all due to getting into the TAZ fandom and the mcelroyism of calling myself a good good boy and realizing that actually yeah that's correct lmao)

Watching you handle the fabric, especially the ruffle, to show the lengths, made me think of having to re-roll the toilet paper after the cat got to it or it fell and unrolled itself.

Something that has stuck with me recently is that one of my best friends said to me in his truck, that "even though you identify as enby, you're still biologically a female. Even with surgery your bone structure is still feminine" it's one of the many things recently that has been causing me so much stress. So it's nice to hear the thing I've been missing for so long :)

No living person has any reason to care about your bones (as long as they are whole) and archaeologists can only sex skeletons correctly like 60% of the time. Traditional gender norms are just mythology or the stories we tell ourselves about biology, and we can choose to rewrite the story if we want to.

I like soft and pretty things and love this dress! BUT the idea of wearing it myself...nope. That gives me waaay too much dysphoria. I'm not really "out" but I def know I'm not a woman. I'm just me tho. I like what I like. I enjoy painting a lot. And the idea that painting birds might be "gendered" is so weird. I just like birds. So I've had to talk to myself and say it's ok and it doesn't make me less who I am or prove I'm not trans or whatever. Hearing other people talk about this and their journey's and how we all experience gender and the world is so comforting. Thanks :)

skirts IS fun, and honestly? still relates to gender discussion. more people should wear them, no matter their presentation, because the sensation of swishing a skirt is just so great (ymmv depending on source of dysphoria of course).

Thinking about what you said "this is what you get for $4 a yard" and the fabrics I bought recently- 5.5 meters of interlock cotton knit for $10 a meter, as well as 3 meters of a lightweight synthetic knit and 2.5 meters of a lightweight lining cotton at $5.70 a meter... I think I made the right choice in getting those fabrics. The only reason I got the synthetic was that I needed that particular color, and I knew with how lightweight of a knit it was it would pair well with the cotton lining to make a nice bomber jacket. Also, snipping a piece of the interlock and burning it was way too much fun- for what it's worth I am not planning arson- and left me smelling like smoke for the rest of the night.

I really enjoyed this video, thank you for your vulnerability!! This was a beautiful project-- and the tidying shots towards the end made me extra excited to see the video about your space you've mentioned! As a side note, I'm a fellow D20 nerd and have loved watching you progress through the back catalog as I've binged your channel lately! If you've ever cosplayed your barbarian (or another TTRPG character) I'd love to see that content!! Okay bye 💜

Literally the time it takes to make a petticoat is the reason I’ve been procrastinating making them OOPS. Hells yeah the floof though!!! And omg I love that corset cover So Much, what pattern did you use for it? And ALSO love you for mentioning TV’s appropriative NONSENSE. 11/10 appreciate that so much ❤

it’s true, they seem so fun at first, and then you realize how long it’s gonna take…… and it’s suffering time lol. also funny you should say that because sadly the corset cover IS an old TV pattern 🙃 but I bet there’s lots of other good edwardian patterns out there!!

You might not see this, as it goes. But I'm just really thankful to have found a creator who genuinely feels like someone who I would vibe with. As a fellow nonbinary lesbian, my neurodiversity makes it difficult because people subconsciously will always clock you for being odd or weird in some way. They don't really realize it either. They don't see how they look at you. But it makes interpersonal connection difficult and so hearing someone who's self discovery and identify feels so similar to my own is really heartwarming I guess? It makes me feel less alone. It's hard to feel like you only exist in the reflection of how people see you. It's hard realizing as an androgynous nonbinary black person that people treat me better when my hair is longer. Or when I wear makeup. It's hard realizing that people can see you in a way you can't mask, they'll always know something is different about you. You can change you speech, you mannerisms, how much eye contact you give, how close you are- it makes you so hyperfixated on how you present yourself- and to still see the very moment someone thinks you're odd in someway is...hard. You're the honor student, the weird one in class, the artsy kid that get validation for people admiring their art and create an unhealthy dependency on outside affirmation in the crafts you make or the content you post. For a long time that warped my sense of self, and at 25 I have to unlearn all of that baggage and realize at the end of it I don't really know who I am. And also hope at the end of it, people will like me for me. This is all just a big ramble/vent I suppose, but watching videos of people like u make me feel a bit better, because I think you're pretty cool, and It gives me hope people might think the same of me someday.

I don't know if neurodiversity in the cosplay scene is a topic able to be explored, I'm a fursuit maker, and that definitely is something people do because it gives them confidence to be more themselves and find community. I don't know if it's a topic you'd ever explore, but Id be really interested in it.

I love love love what you said about identity being about community and belonging and shared experiences and not about checking off boxes or precise fit (paraphrasing so apologies if I butchered what you meant). I've been going through some struggles figuring out my identity. In addition to just queer I like the label "bi-ace" despite not strictly adhering to the definition of either, so while it's a different identity, I found what you said about being a non-binary lesbian very validating 🌈💜

I really liked this skirt, both the color & the floof. Thanks also for sharing some of your personal journey. I think “queer” is just fine for the public. Don’t feel like you owe people explanations, nor is it your responsibility to educate. More detail for people you have relationships with can be useful -friends, close family & perhaps some coworkers. Strangers don’t need to know, probably don’t want to either.

Wonderful video, very informative and cozy, and interesting even to someone who, like me, has never sewn anything in their life 🌼 The amount of joy I got from seeing your Envy cosplay (and AFMD right after, and the Avatar bits) - if I’d been into cosplaying, that would’ve been my choice too, aged roundabout 14. Ten years later I belatedly realise why Envy was my favourite for a long time… Very gender 👌🏻

for burn tests, I use a pair of hemostats to hold the fabric and just burn it over my sink so i can put it in water immediately if needed, but into a candle is genius! edit: also as a he/they trans man i feel u on the “skirts fun but also just feels like drag” and i love it, i’m definitely more of a feminine person but that doesnt! invalidate! my gender!

this definitely made me think about gender differently as someone who sews and does historical recreation and costumes, and is also enby and i'd really prefer people not perceive me as any gender. i used to think i just didn't want to be perceived, at all, just don't look at me. but i'm fine if i'm confusing crappy people and cool people think it's great
