Binding tip. Toss the ruler! Stop your stitching so there is a minimum of 6" of binding not sewn. Just clip off a piece of your binding and unfold it. Trim one end of the binding leaving a couple of inches from where your stitching stopped. Now, lay your clipped off piece across your binding where you trimmed it so the little piece is perpendicular to your stitched on binding. Now lay the other side of the binding down along the edge. Cut it so it overlaps the other piece of sewn on binding by exactly the width of the little piece of binding. Best part? This works for any size binding. It allows you to overlap the cut pieces of binding by exactly the width of your unfolded binding - every time! No rulers, no measuring!

Here's my trick for the binding. I saw this in a youtube video many years ago, and it works great. For one side of your binding, fold it back on itself exactly at the spot you marked. Cut on the fold. Now, take your other binding tail and fold it back on itself leaving a gap between that folded edge and the cut edge to equal your seam allowance. In this case, leave a 3/8" gap. Now take the binding piece you cut off and open it flat. Lay it along the fold on your other side. If your binding is 2.5" wide, you would be trimming off your other side at 2.5" from the fold you made. No need to measure anything, and this method works with any size binding. All you need to know is your seam allowance. Finishing up is the same as what you did. I've made hundreds of quilts, and this is the easist binding method I've ever found.

I would probably add a handle on each side to carry it. Looks like it would be great for also carrying travel documents needed for a cruise. Passports, vaccine cards, covid test results, boarding passes, parking passes, hotel reservations, etc. Love this!

My daughter does D&D with some friends. This would be great for the all the parts to do their campaigns. Might need it to be slightly larger for the notes. Pockets can hold the dice, characters, pens/pencils amd whatever else needed.

Maybe not all that are watching understand how to figure out which way a closed zipper goes. There are two sides to a zipper head, one has 2 openings for the open zipper and the other end has 1 opening for the closed zipper. The zipper goes in as 2 sides and comes out as 1 closed zipper. And a lesson on how to attach the zipper head to those zipper-on-a-roll zippers. I love your videos. Keep 'em coming. And byAnnies stiletto is one of my 5 favorite notions. I use it every time I sew.

You named all sorts of ways to use this 'case'. But I didn't hear the use as a cover for a Happy Planner, or a coil planner. Perfect for that use. It would hold pens and stickers, etc.

This is such a great idea! I love the idea of a project portfolio. I hate wasting time, so I often bring a project when picking up kids from school, or waiting for an appointment. This would be great to stay organized and not loose scissors and glue in the car.

I think you can also use this pattern to create a cover for a regular ring binder by just adjusting the width/ size. Possibly even adding a zipper all around it, but then it'd become a different pattern^^;;

I made it today - so cute and useful. I used #3 zippers for the small pockets and found my bottom pocket was a bit too short, but it was fine with the interfacing. I think yours is too long as I think you used #5 zippers. Next time I will again use the #3 but will cut the vinyl and the interior fabric for the bottom pocket a 1/2" taller. I love your videos and have made many of your projects.

Love your tutorials! My husband does a lot of fishing this would be great for storing lures, leader line, hooks etc. Just maybe skip the girly fabric and go a little more masculine maybe even use Sunbrella or waterproof canvas!

Excellent! I can see this for homeschoolers, adults who like to relax with coloring books, holder for taking along homework... I would probably add something stiff in one of the slip pockets (maybe a small clipboard?) that can be pulled out when needed. I may have found my pattern for next year's Christmas gifts! I'm getting the pattern today!

You are probably using #5 zippers when she had 4.5 recommended in the pattern. This is why you have the over hang.

I think it would make a great teacher gift! Checking the measurements in the pattern it seems as if 1 fat quarter for exterior and 2 for lining, plus binding fabric. Do I really need a full yard for the exterior? Am I missing something obvious? I have some batik fat quarters I'd love to use.

I've just finished this and yes, you can use fat quarters. I used 1 fat quarter for the exterior, another for the lining, 1 for the pocket linings and another for the binding. Worked great :-)

I love this finished product but I am sorry to say the pattern provided by Sewinideas is one of the worst patterns I have used since I started sewing. I ended up figuring out dimensions on my own to a size that would suit my needs. They should put some work into better written clearer less cumbersome patterns. Praises to you Jess for this tutorial. Without it I don’t know how anyone will make this without turning gray

No need to measure the width of the tail on your binding end. You're going to cut off some, anyway. Use what you cut off to tell you how wide it is.

It's now a tradition! ;-) I noticed you didn't cut your perimeter binding fabric on the bias. Is that because your quilt cotton has some give in it or you don't need any give to get around the corners of the organizer? Thx.

You can make it to suit any size you want so it will be able to fit a notebook in the pocket. I increased all my measurements by 1/2 inch to get room for a notepad and notebook in the large inner pocket
