Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
Here is, compressed into 23 minutes, an impulse decision based on a 30 second TikTok that spun into a week's worth of sewing! Over all, I'm very pleased with this dress - I draped and drafted it all myself, I used entirely stash materials, I went out of my comfort zone and used modern techniques like overlocking, machine embroidery, and machine shirring, and I ended up with a very comfortable dress, in a very flattering silhouette with pretty good finishing! It hits all the spots: a wider skirt circumference, an expanding waistline, a finished inside, a zipper for ease, a pocket for all important snacks... all in all, a success! I had no make a few alterations from the original dress that inspired mainly for two reasons: first, I prefer fuller skirts as I find them more fun and flattering; second, I don't really work with stretch fabrics (the original seems to have some stretch in it), so it was naturally going to be a more structured dress.
The pattern is made of a deep v-neck (surprisingly deep lol), a separate waistband of shirred material, and a six gores skirt with a side pocket and a side zipper. I was able to squeeze this out of 2.5 meters of fabric, 144 cms wide. The pattern will be available to all Patreon tiers soon! The construction, summarised, goes: assemble all bodice seams (leaving a gap for the zipper on your preferred side seam); finish seams in your preferred method (I overlocked everything before sewing); add neckline facing to finish neckline (or finish in preferred way! can just be hemmed too, though harder on a v-neck); shirr waistband panel; attach to bottom edge of bodice, leaving matching gap on a side seam for the zipper; hem bottom edge of sleeves; shirr cuffs; sew up sleeve side seam; gather sleeve head; set in sleeve head; assemble the skirt panels (adding a pocket if wanted) and leaving a side seam gap for the zipper; baste skirt to bodice, try on and adjust if needed; sew waist seam; try on, mark, and hem!
A big thank you to @_samanthamartin ( / _samanthamartin ) on TikTok for giving me permission to share the TikTok that inspired it all - please check out her incredible videos!

You could slip a lace inset in the top for more demure occasions, and I kind of think a few inches of black lace at the bottom would make it a bit fancy, as an add on or a petticoat coat with lace to peak under, really like the fabric and color, worked well i think. hope you wear it more often than you think you will. :)

As I try to avoid zippers. Thank you for sparking my curiosity. I am imagining a design having the side sheared making it a five piece pattern top and a bit of elastic in a channel at waist to gather the waist of the skirt. Thus Avoiding the dreaded bust adjustment darts and zipper instillation. ❤

It turned out great. 😊 You could add some lace or ruffles to the neckline if you want to bring up the neckline.

It’s a very sweet dress! I think the neckline would be perfect for adding necklace with a bit of length to it or large pendant if you ever wanted to dress it up, otherwise you could insert a bit of lace or do something fun with a scarf (maybe sort of like a fischu?) if it bothers you. For the dart, you could rotate it to midriff and turn it into gathers or tucks there, or to gathers in the shoulder if you really don’t want to have a dart.

Dress is lovely. The sheering looks really cute and adds a fun element to the dress.

Nice😊 But I wonder why you put a zipper into an elastic waist dress? It seems to be a bit of unnecessary work. And I would have rotated the bust dart into a gathered waistline instead of removing it, as it looks like you have lots of wrinkling under the bust. But you do you, and it looks quite comfy and spooky.

The dress is lovely as is - you carry it off quite well. That said, a lace camisole would grant a bit more coverage if you want.

The dress is gorgeous and looks super comfortable to wear! I adore it. I would put a bit of lace at the bottom of the "v" so the dress is less revealing

This looks so good on you. I love the smocking. That was a great idea to add the extra smocking to the sleeves. I even like the color on you!

Very cute! Love the cuff shirring. I wish I could stand the feel of elastic against my skin, maybe I need to try actual smocking.

I think the dress turned out super cute on you! I did see the neckline and blanched a bit, just because it would definitely not be something I'd ever be comfortable with, but... I have several shirts that are much lower cut than I actually prefer and I've found ways to make them work (things like dickies and sewn in panels for the ones that couldn't have the neckline adjusted). Overall, though, really a successful dress! (Oh, and I actually thought of you yesterday because my sister went to the Taylor Swift concert in Florida and was regaling me with stories, and it made me think of you and your Taylor Swift dress.) 😁

How GORGEOUS !! 🤩 Say, when you wind up your bobin with the elastic thread by hand, do you apply some tension already when doing that, or is setting the machine tension to the max enough for it to work ? x
@CatsCostumery
@CatsCostumery День назад
I do ever so slight tension, so enough to keep the elastic thread on but not enough to visibly stretch the elastic if that makes sense! ☺️

Nice dress but the front is all wrong. I don’t think the fabric is supposed to stretch and make all those “wrinkles” plus bagging under the neckline as is very evident at 20:11 Tbh I wouldn’t know how to fix it but imo that doesn’t work at all.
@lfuentes4098
@lfuentes4098 12 часов назад
When drafting in the 3” circle area around the apex your supposed to contour the neckline. So you use negative ease. But it needs to go somewhere. Usually into a dart under the bust or gathers. I agree the bust area looks too tight and that most likely because she had the fitted top sewn into a gathered waist. But a little lace in the deep v should cover up the bust. And if you really want of the shoulder I think cutting away the neckline a bit more at the shoulder would help.
