Sewing Machine Running by Itself - Singer Foot Controller Fix

If your sewing machine takes off on it's own accord even though you're not using the foot controller, then there may be a problem with the capacitor in the foot controller.
This particular foot controller is for a Singer 700 series sewing machine.
If the capacitor fails it can cause the machine to run by itself.
Generally this is caused by a failing capacitor which causes a direct short across the foot controller, causing it to run at full power.
I show how to get into the foot controller to access the capacitor and how to remove it. Once removed the short circuit is also removed, therefore fixing the immediate issue.
It's a good idea to replace the capacitor but if you need to get some sewing done, you can use your machine with it removed.
I would recommend replacing the capacitor as soon as possible as it's purpose is to suppress noise on the mains and can also cause issues with arcing in the foot controller.
This controller has a 1 microfarad, 275V capacitor installed which is removed. The capacitor is a common off the shelf item and can be supplied and installed easily.

Thanks so much! I can't believe there's a video for my vintage (but well-loved) machine's problem! Saved it from the scrapheap! This could cure so many old machine's here in the UK and around the world....

Thank you very much! Had the same problem with my wife’s favorite long-running Husqvarna 4010 - and after thoroughly inspecting everything and looking for a video fixed by your advice in several minutes! Now will find replacement capacitors and put it back on service. All the best to you!

I had this problem. I am now led to believe that there is no reason to replace the capacitor (just remove it (was easy)), as the 'electrical noise suppression' it was there for (e.g. the sound on old, valve radios/tv's might 'crackle' when using machines) was a 1960's thing and is no longer required/needed. The pedal on my old Singer 328k works great without it 🙂

Exactly what I was looking for, both how to get inside the controller and what might be responsible for the smell that began after 2 minutes of it running normally. 40 year old Singer 427 serviced in 2015 and barely used since then.

That's what mine did! Mine is a Singer 185k and I first used it yesterday... all was going well and then suddenly when I walked away from the machine to get some more fabric, it started running by itself at high speed and scared the living hell out of me and also jammed itself in the process :/ I'm not confident enough to try and fix it myself

Just a word of advice, use a rated electricians screwdriver to protect yourself as the capacitors can still hold charge and you could get a shock, that screwdriver is just not suitable, make sure you short out the capacitor before removal also

Most of the capacitors have bleed resistors installed in parallel so I've never had any issues. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the great video. I have a second capacitor in mine, there’s the one you have in the same place then there’s another one that goes from the live leg up to the top copper part. Do you have any comments on that? I need to replace the capacitor you show but I don’t know if I have a different circuit

Very helpful video. Thanks very Much! I wonder if you ever also considered to replicate old broken (bakelite) plugs by simply making them out of brown Resin. So they can look like the one you have on this Foot pedal.? Almost every Pfaff 260 or 332 has broken components like that. And they cost a lot. II am quite not sure if the use of such a casing is aloud, and if so, which specification is has to be (which resin chemicals). If someone has some Ideas or experience /expertise? I would be happy to hear it.

Love all your videos 🌞 I have recently inherited my aunts sewing machine singer 306k It needed badly new cables..... I forgot to take a picture before I started..... So I'm worried about I've put on the little cabel wrong on the box where the machine cabel meets the fot cabel..... (the part pluk you put into the machine).... And now I can't remember how 🙈.... I'm afraid I will burn the machine if it is wrong.... Can I ask you to send me a picture if it is possible.... Or explain it to me in some way.... 😇..... Sorry to disturb you...... Hi. When I was working with the machine, smoke came out of the controller and it was from the capacitor. I replaced it, but now it does not work at all. What am I doing? Thanks

Why would you replace the capacitor? Have I missed something? If it still runs without, is it important to replace?

The machine will run without it but it's a good idea to have them in there to stop electrical "noise" on the line. Thanks.

You could use an appropriate resistor. Your local electrician should be able to help there. Thanks.

Great Video. I have a question related to the capacitor. I have a similar situation but the capacitor is really old model and there is not thing written on it. (Singer 198 - which was manufactured around mid 60s) Could I replace it with a 1 microfarad, 275V capacitor? My machine using 220V as well, so it should be identical. Many thanks!
@InStitches
@InStitches 3 года назад
Normally that capacitor is 0.1 microfarad but it would pay to take it to your mechanic to be sure.

It an electrical noise suppressor.

Awwww i had this problem... Took it out and the speed was like super fast when I turned it on and pressed the pedal, i bought a new capacitor thinking that would fix it.. But it still runs super fast with no difference on pedal pressure 😢
@InStitches
@InStitches 3 года назад
That can be a problem with the variable resistor in the foot controller. Maybe you could get someone to take a look or keep an eye out for another foot controller.

@@InStitches thank you :) in the end i wiggled with the carbon pile, it was like stuck and also the screw under neath which i had to nearly take out buttttt it worked!!.... And then a plastic gear went inside the machine so i need to order a new one 😂

I have an old sewing machine, In where motor is there is a 0,1uf 250v Rifa capacitor. Which is exploded and leaked out some kind of brown mess. I was wondering, I was told that its a suppression filter. Do I need to have it and can use the machine without? Thanks

There could be several reasons your motor is emitting a smell. It may pay to take it in for service. Thanks.
