Sewing Pattern Hack: How to Add Ruffles to Any Garment 

That's great feedback, thank you! This is an older video, and in our newer ones we try to show as well as tell, versus just listing the steps as we've done for a portion of this video.

You fold the fabric lengthwise and baste along the curved edges with the fabric wrong sides together, and then gather the basting stitches. That way only the right side of the fabric is exposed on both sides of the ruffle, the inside doesn't show. Hope that helps!

I understand the concept of folding over so the fabric is exposed on both sides, but in the description in the video (or maybe I'm supposed to know this), it does not explain that when basting on the curved sides, you need to get rid of that raw edge first. I have trouble understanding the way the people, who make patterns like McCalls and Vogue, etc., explain the instructions. I usually sew to forget my problems and distract myself as it helps me relax. If I have time, I will do a video on how to muffle with the ruffle fabric after the pattern has been created. Thank you. I want to explain how I really misunderstood the instructions on a doll dress that has the ruffles placed on an apron style dress with straps. It should've been easy. It took me 24 hours later to figure the ruffle out. So it said upper and lower ruffle, well I did your style of double layer ruffle but it didn't call for that. It was exposing the inside of the fabric and, yes, it was sewing along the curvy edge. I didn't do that either -- I sewed the basting for pulling the thread and gathering on the straight edge of the fabric as I had been accustomed for so many things like ruffles on skirts. Well, after I attached it to the strap, I realized that I followed the instructions wrong and I did have to baste on curve side and gather on curvy side. Ugh, the ruffle is still on the doll dress with the gathering on the straight edge and it looks nice but I wish I would've followed the instructions. Instead of taking the upper and lower ruffle and uniting them, I needed to attach individual "upper" and "lower" ruffle and so what if the inside of fabric showed. I know better now.
