Sewing with Sterling Silver: Making a Tooled Leather Knife Sheath

This subscriber-supplied decorative knife gave me the perfect chance to hone a skill that I've been wanting to try: Sewing leather with sterling silver wire! Silver wire is used a lot in jewelry making (though not so much in leather craft), so it's pretty easy to source and not too expensive. I may have to try this technique on a fancy holster or bag at some point.
Stamps I used in this video:
Tandy Rope Basket Weave Brass Stamp
Craftool Pro D2197
Craftool S931
Barry King Pebble Steep Angle beveler
btw, the laser I'm using in this video is the Creality Falcon 2 Pro 60W. If interested, below is a link to save my viewers some $ on purchasing one (use code"FNPALL10"). Full disclosure: my channel makes a (very) small commission on this.

Very Nice ! 👍 I love the use of the silver wire, Beautiful accent and functional addition to this peace. This is sheath is worthy for such a knife, or this knife is worthy of such a BEAUTIFUL SHEATH. It looks like though we’re using one of the new brass stamps from one of the National leather companies (didn’t want to get into trouble for saying the name🤩). I have that same stamp and really like the crispness and detail these stamps produce. Can’t end this with out noticing the green gloves! Very fashionable 👍😊😁 Thank You for sharing your talents.😎

Lovely video. Here is some information about the engravings on the knife. One side with the horse rider on it, it highlights the time when Fatih Sultan Mehmet who is the conquerer of Constantinapolis in 1453 and change its name to İstanbul. The other side is, ancestors of Turks used to be nomads. They wander around in middle east with their herds and their belongings. Turks used to be nomads between 1000-1500 A.D. Btw thats a really good knife ❤

Workmanship... impeccable. As a wallhanger it's a bit corny. The silver wire over the smoothest part of the leather, impractical. Then the press stud as a closer on the plain Jane tab. No. And a 4 in wide belt loop that would flop all over the place.

Beginner here. Beautiful build and very inspirational. Does anyone know what that soapy solution was in the begging when he put it on both sides of the sheath and then put it in the plastic bag? I've just been using plain water to case the leather.
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 2 месяца назад
It's glycerin saddle soap. It helps make better stamp impressions and slows down the drying process some. Not a necessary thing and plain water will do . . . just something I do I guess. Thanks for subscribing!

Knife sheaths are so fun to make. It's such a simple thing, but there's no end to the creative things you can do with them. Stitching with wire must have been a super tedious process, but the end result was totally worth it. That looks amazing. One question... what are those rivets you put in the corners called? I've never seen a tubular rivet with a burr before.
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 2 месяца назад
They're regular tubular rivets. They're just a tad short for making a proper "splash" on this piece. In such cases, I add a small washer and flair out the end with an old center punch I ground to a cone.

What’s the advantage to using saddle soap in the casing process over just using the spray bottle then tool?
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Месяц назад
It's an old technique I learned: The saddle soap helps lubricate the leather fibers. This allows a swivel knife glide through the leather easier and stamps make better impressions. It also slows down the leather drying.
@peterliebmann2391
@peterliebmann2391 Месяц назад
May I ask what is the purpose to put the wet leather in the bag and what is the soap for ? I‘m doing also in leather but this process is new for me. Thanks in advance, greetings from Vienna \ Austria 🤝
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Месяц назад
It's a process called "casing". It's exclusively for preparing veg-tan leather for tooling. The saddle soap helps lubricate the leather fibers. This allows a swivel knife glide through the leather easier and stamps make better impressions. It also slows down the leather drying.
@NomadShadow1
@NomadShadow1 2 месяца назад
Ooo that’s snazzy. My first thought about the wire thread was that it might bite through the leather over time, is that something you’re worried about?
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 2 месяца назад
No. This is relatively thick veg-tan leather; it's tough stuff. More importantly, there shouldn't be any "movement" in this seam that would allow the wire to grind into the leather (i.e., think the flap of a satchel or the folding and unfolding of a wallet).

My friend, what you do not know is that when the Turks occupied Egypt, Damascus and Baghdad, they stole everything and attributed it to themselves. They even stole carpets from mosques, and they also deported blacksmiths and carpenters against their will to Turkey. Everything you see in Turkey is stolen. They even say that the Damascus sword is Turkish.
